Abstract

This paper attempts to examine the historical development of astronomy, focusing on the lineage from Prophet Seth to Prophet Idris. Prophet Idris, as a descendant of Prophet Adam, plays a central role in the development of astronomical science. He is considered one of the pioneers in this field, with significant contributions in formulating and recording various astronomical knowledge. This paper aims to uncover the origins, evolution, and significant contributions of the prophets in the development of astronomy since the time of Prophet Adam. This paper relies on qualitative data collected through library research, using descriptive historical analysis of various sources, including religious texts and related literature. With this research framework, it was found that astronomy has been an integral part of human civilization since the time of Prophet Adam. This research also highlights the development of astronomy. The lineage of Prophet Adam serves as a framework for understanding how scientific knowledge, including astronomy, has developed in the context of agriculture, calculation, and prediction.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari in the development of Falak (Islamic astronomy) in South Kalimantan, complementing prior biographical studies and scholarship. The issue addressed is the paucity of research on the historical dissemination of Falak knowledge by indigenous Banjar scholars. Employing a library research methodology, the principal data source is Yusuf Halidi’s Ulama Besar Kalimantan Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari. A qualitative content analysis traces Syekh Muhammad Arsyad’s more than three decades of education in Mecca, his corrective interventions regarding qibla orientation in mosques across Batavia, and his initiative to establish an Islamic educational institution in Kampung Dalam Pagar. The findings demonstrate that he mastered thirty-five disciplines, that his treatise Mas’alah al-Qiblah fil-Batawy served as the primary reference for qibla determination in his era, and that he founded a pesantren which produced successive generations of Banjar scholars. These results underscore Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari’s pivotal contribution to the Nusantara Falak tradition and highlight the imperative of preserving his manuscript legacy.

Abstract

The development of rukyatul hilal technology is growing very fast, one of them is the astrophotography technique used to take an image of the hilal so that it becomes a photo that can be seen many times. However, we need to know that the determination of the beginning of the qamariyah month is not entirely dependent on science, but what determines whether or not an image is accepted as the basis for changing the qamariyah month is in the realm of shari'a (fiqh). Problems arise related to the acceptance of astrophotography images as a basis for determining the change of qamariyah months in fiqh, and if it is allowed whether there are certain conditions in it. This research was written using the literature study method by tracing the rules of fiqh in classical and contemporary Islamic sources, which were then analyzed deductively in order to formulate a regulation. With this method, it was found that the use of astrophotography in rukyatul hilal is allowed. However, in order for the image to be accepted as the basis for proof, three (3) conditions must be fulfilled.

Abstract

Differences in determining the beginning of Qamariyah months-especially Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhu al-Hijjah-often lead to socio-religious dynamics in Indonesia. This phenomenon reflects the tension between hisab (astronomical calculation) and rukyat (direct observation), each rooted in distinct theological and epistemological traditions within Islam. This paper aims to explore how the differences between the hisab and rukyat methods can be socially interpreted as a reflection of religious tolerance in the framework of Pancasila ideology. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research and social interpretation analysis of normative texts and social practices. The findings indicate that variations in determining the start of the lunar month should not be seen as a source of conflict but rather as a space for dialogue and respect for religious diversity. Within the context of Pancasila-particularly the third and fifth principles-tolerance toward differing religious interpretations serves as a crucial foundation for social harmony and national integration. Thus, the hisab-rukyat methods possess not only astronomical and religious dimensions but also socio-political values that support cohesion in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

The exclusion of women from witnessing rukyat al-hilal remains a critical issue in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, raising questions about gender inclusivity and the contextual interpretation of classical fiqh. This research reexamines Imam al-Shafi‘i’s fiqh concerning the prohibition of women serving as witnesses in rukyat al-hilal. The prohibition originally arose within a classical social context where women had limited access to astronomy. However, in the modern era, many women have acquired advanced expertise in astronomy and actively participate in determining the beginning of the lunar month. Therefore, this prohibition has lost its relevance and may contribute to the subordination of women in religious decision-making. Using a hermeneutic approach and Najmuddin al-Tufi’s theory of maṣlaḥah mursalah, the study finds that Imam al-Shafi‘i formulated his legal opinions by considering the social conditions of his time, as reflected in his qaul qadim and qaul jadid. Theoretically, this study highlights that fiqh is dynamic and responsive to changing contexts. Practically, it suggests that accepting the testimony of competent women in rukyat al-hilal aligns with the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in developing a more inclusive and adaptive Islamic legal system.

Abstract

Determining the Qibla direction is a crucial aspect of performing the prayer (salat), particularly for Muslims living far from the Kaaba. Issues arise regarding whether one must face the exact structure of the Kaaba ('ayn al-Ka'bah) or if merely facing its general direction (jihat al-Ka'bah) is sufficient. This study aims to analyze the concept of Qibla direction tolerance according to Sheikh Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani as a solution to Qibla deviation, specifically within the context of mosques in the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago) region. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method, examining the works of Sheikh Yasin alongside both classical and contemporary literature related to Islamic astronomy (ilmu falak). The results show that Sheikh Yasin proposes two scopes for the Qibla direction: jihat al-kubra (up to 180°) and jihat al-sughra (up to 90°), with a maximum tolerance of 45° to the right and left of the ideal direction. This view demonstrates the flexibility within classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) regarding the limitations of measurement tools and observation methods in the past. Nevertheless, Sheikh Yasin consistently emphasizes the importance of Islamic astronomy and the mastery of scientific methods to determine a more accurate Qibla direction. In conclusion, Sheikh Yasin's perspective provides room for shari'i (legal) tolerance in determining the Qibla direction, while simultaneously emphasizing the urgency of utilizing modern technology to achieve greater precision in religious practices.

Abstract

The determination of the beginning of lunar months, particularly Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhu al-Hijjah, is a crucial issue in the religious life of Muslims as it is directly related to the performance of worship. One of the critical aspects in this determination is the validity of testimony in the sighting of the new crescent moon (rukyatul hilal). This article aims to comprehensively examine the perspectives of the Islamic legal schools (imam mazahib) regarding the requirements, number, and admissibility of witnesses in rukyatul hilal, as well as to analyze their implications in a contemporary context. The research method employed is a library study with a comparative fiqh analysis approach, by comparing the opinions of the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali schools based on classical fiqh literature and modern fatwas. The findings indicate that there are fundamental differences among the schools concerning the number of witnesses, the acceptance of individual testimony, and the criteria of witness credibility. These differences stem from distinct methodologies of legal reasoning (istinbat al-hukm) and approaches to interpreting hadith. Contemporary analysis emphasizes that such differences should be understood as part of the richness of Islamic jurisprudence, while also opening new avenues of ijtihad for the unification of the Hijri calendar in Indonesia. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to strengthening the discourse on hisab-rukyat fiqh in the modern era.

Abstract

This study reconstructs the chronology and historical context of the qibla change – the redirection of Muslim prayer from Baitul Maqdis to the Ka‘bah – through a rigorous textual analysis of Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī’s hadith commentary, Fath al-Bārī. While previous Islamic historiography has rarely treated hadith commentaries as viable primary sources, this study addresses that gap. Employing a qualitative framework that integrates historical-hermeneutic analysis with an interpretive-historical approach, it examines Fath al-Bārī to produce a chronologically precise and contextually grounded account. To reconcile conflicting reports on the date of the change, Ibn Ḥajar applied al-jam’ wa al-tawfīq (compromise) by specifying the lunar count from Rabī‘ al-Awwal to Rajab, explaining the 16‑ versus 17‑month discrepancy through inclusive and exclusive calculations. He then used tarjīḥ (critical selection) based on sanad quality to establish mid‑Rajab of the second Hijri year as the definitive moment of transition. The research also illuminates the socio‑political climate of Madinah, including Muslim‑Jewish relations, the Companions’ role in transmitting the news, and the event’s impact on consolidating early Muslim identity. The study concludes that Fath al-Bārī functions not merely as hadith exegesis but as a significant historiographical document, offering a methodological model for integrating hadith scholarship with historical inquiry.
