Abstract

The phenomenon of marine mammal stranding is a complex conservation issue, with species identification often hindered by degraded carcass conditions. This research aimed to identify the species of a stranded marine mammal found in the waters of Aceh Jaya, Indonesia, using both morphological and molecular approaches. Fieldwork was conducted from August 2023 to January 2024 at Ketapang Beach, Krueng Sabee, Aceh Jaya. Initial morphological identification, based on observed physical characteristics and existing literature, showed consistency with Kogia breviceps. However, severe specimen degradation prevented accurate identification of several key features (gills and body color), highlighting the inherent limitations of morphological methods for degraded carcasses. To overcome these limitations, molecular identification was performed. Tissue samples were subjected to DNA extraction using the DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit, followed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of the mitochondrial Control Region (D-loop) gene using L15812/H16498 primers. Agarose gel electrophoresis confirmed successful amplification of a 523 bp target DNA fragment, although a smear indicating degradation was observed. DNA sequencing was subsequently performed and analyzed using MEGA 11 software and the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) algorithm against the NCBI GenBank database. BLAST analysis definitively identified the stranded marine mammal as Kogia breviceps, with a Query Cover of 93-95% and Percent Identity of 98.80-99.32% compared to reference sequences. This study concludes that molecular identification is crucial and accurate for species determination of degraded stranded marine mammals. This research recommends strengthening national stranding response protocols to include molecular sampling and enhancing genetic laboratory capacity to support marine mammal conservation efforts in Indonesia

Abstract

Financial institutions face challenges in credit risk assessment due to fragmented data and strict privacy regulations, which hinder predictive modeling and increase financial risks. Federated Learning (FL) enables privacy-preserving collaborative modeling without sharing raw data. This study evaluates five FL aggregation methods—Federated Averaging (FedAvg), Weighted Average, Median Aggregation, Federated Proximal (FedProx), and Stochastic Controlled Averaging (SCAFFOLD)—using logistic regression on the Credit Approval dataset (690 records, five clients) with non-IID label and feature distributions. Local models were trained and aggregated over 50 rounds. Median Aggregation outperformed the other methods, achieving an F1-score of 97.85% and a recall of 80.6% (vs. 72.3% for others), demonstrating robustness against data skewness. However, global model performance (85.22% for FedAvg, Weighted Average, FedProx, SCAFFOLD; 85.80% for Median) remained static across rounds, indicating limited convergence due to rapid local model convergence and non-IID challenges. The high communication cost of 50 rounds highlights a trade-off between accuracy and efficiency, necessitating optimized strategies like adaptive regularization or client sampling. This study advances theoretical understanding of FL under heterogeneity and provides practical guidance for secure, regulation-compliant credit risk modeling in financial institutions. Future work should explore larger datasets, multi-round convergence, and privacy mechanisms like differential privacy to mitigate risks such as model inversion attacks while ensuring compliance

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the concentration of heavy metals, lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), in sediments and oysters (Bivalvia), as well as to examine their relationship with mangrove ecosystem characteristics in Kuala Ceurape (Bireuen) and Udeung Village (Pidie Jaya). Heavy metal concentrations were analyzed using the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) methods, while mangrove species identification was conducted through field vegetation surveys. The results showed that Pb concentrations in sediments ranged from 3.67–15.29 mg/kg with an average of 7.38 mg/kg in Udeung and 8.65 mg/kg in Kuala Ceurape. Cd concentrations in sediments were higher, ranging from 4.69–11.95 mg/kg (average 7.38 mg/kg) in Udeung and 3.54–11.69 mg/kg (average 8.65 mg/kg) in Kuala Ceurape. In oysters, Pb concentrations were recorded at 4.36–9.53 mg/kg in Udeung and 2.16–6.71 mg/kg in Kuala Ceurape, while Cd showed greater accumulation, reaching 17.07–18.13 mg/kg (average 12.71 mg/kg) in Udeung and 1.96–11.21 mg/kg (average 5.16 mg/kg) in Kuala Ceurape. Compared to FAO/WHO and CCME standards, Pb levels in sediments remained below the threshold, but Pb and Cd in oysters and Cd in sediments exceeded safe limits. Vegetation identification indicated the dominance of Rhizophora apiculata, which plays an important role in heavy metal trapping. These findings suggest that mangrove ecosystems function as natural filters of heavy metals, yet bioaccumulation in edible biota such as oysters may pose potential health risks to coastal communities.
