Abstract

One of the primary purposes of physics education is to help students develop critical thinking abilities to solve everyday situations. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of STEM education using PhET simulation on students' critical thinking skills. A pre-experimental approach with a one-group pre-test post-test design was used in this study. There were no control or comparator groups in this study, which was done in a single group. This study was carried out in a high school in Makassar during the even semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. The research population consisted of 110 students separated into three classes. Using a simple random sampling technique, a sample of 37 students from class XI IPA2 was chosen. The results revealed a significant increase in students' critical thinking skill scores after the implementation of STEM Education using PhET simulation. The students’ pre-test means score in linear motion material is 68.18, and it increased (N gain = 0.45) after STEM education through PhET simulation is applied. Likewise, the students' pre-test means score in Newton's Law material was 66.33 and rose significantly to 81.96 (N gain = 0.46) in the post-test. Therefore, this study concludes that STEM education through PhET simulations can improve students' critical thinking skills in both linear motion and Newton's laws materials. This study has implications, especially for physics teachers in improving students' critical thinking skills by using STEM education through PhET simulations.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate a fractional-order mathematical model of COVID-19 transmission using the Caputo derivative definition which suitable to epidemiological cases by its advantage to explain memory effects. The model incorporates compartments for asymptomatic infections and includes a vaccination strategy aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19. We derived the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points for the fractional model and computed the basic reproduction number (R_0 )  using the Next-generation Matrix method. Additionally, we conducted sensitivity analyses of parameters affecting R_0. The stability of the fractional model requires specific conditions to be met by the model parameters. To approximate active COVID-19 cases in Indonesia, we utilized the Explicit Grunwald-Letnikov method which well fit with Caputo fractional differential system. Simulation results demonstrate that the fractional-order model offers a flexible approach for modelling active COVID-19 cases in these regions. We found that fractional order for active cases COVID-19 in Indonesia is α=0.9856. The simulation showed that decreasing the vaccination rate and the efficacy of the vaccine would affect the reduction of COVID-19 transmission.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential skills required of students in the 21st century. This research aims to provide an overview of students' critical thinking skills at in high school while studying the concept of Newton's Laws. Critical thinking skills refer to the cognitive processes employed by students to analyze and evaluate information effectively, enabling sound decision-making. The research method used is a descriptive-quantitative approach, involving a population of 130 students and a purposive sample of 60 students. Data were collected using a critical thinking test comprising 31 multiple-choice questions, addressing four indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. The result of the study show that students' performance on the interpretation indicator predominantly fell into the low category, with 53.33%. Critical thinking skills for the analytical indicator were similarly low, at 38.33%. Critical thinking skills for evaluation were also categorized as low, at 43.33%. Meanwhile, critical thinking skills for inference were slightly better, being in the medium category at 46.67%. In general, students' critical thinking abilities at SMAN 5 Sidrap were primarily low, with 60% of students falling into this category. One of the factors causing students' poor critical thinking skills is the infrequent exposure to exercises designed to measure these skills. Therefore, implementing learning models that actively enhance critical thinking skills is essential.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of environmentally-based student worksheets on enhancing observational skills in physics education. Active student participation is crucial for effective learning, and innovative tools such as these worksheets are designed to improve student engagement and skill development. The study specifically aims to: (1) assess the observational skills of grade X students at State Senior High School 2 Mamuju using environmentally-based student worksheets; (2) compare these skills with those of students using conventional student worksheets; and (3) analyze the differences in observational skills between the two groups. A quasi-experimental design was employed, using a posttest-only control group method. The independent variable was the type of student worksheet (environmentally-based vs. conventional), while the dependent variable was students' observational skills. The sample included grade X MIPA students, with 33 students in the experimental group (using environmentally-based worksheets) and 35 students in the control group (using conventional worksheets) selected through purposive sampling. Results demonstrated that students using environmentally-based student worksheets exhibited significantly higher observational skills (mean score: 16.27, high category) compared to those using conventional worksheets (mean score: 12.4, moderate category). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the groups. These findings suggest that integrating environmentally-based student worksheets is an effective strategy for improving observational skills, fostering better engagement, and enhancing students' understanding of physics concepts, particularly in the context of Newton’s laws of motion. The study emphasizes the importance of context-rich, interactive learning tools for science education.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of education in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 demands the mastery of critical thinking as a core competency for students. However, physics learning at the tertiary level still tends to be teacher-centered, resulting in low levels of critical thinking skills. This study aimed to develop Project-Based Learning (PjBL) teaching materials to enhance students’ critical thinking abilities in physics, specifically in kinematics. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). Participants were physics education students at Makassar State University in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, project performance assessments, and critical thinking skill tests, and then analyzed using descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative approaches. The results showed that expert validation of the developed teaching materials reached an average of 96.96% (very valid), while student responses obtained 91.71% (very positive). Students’ project creation ability achieved an average score of 84.25 (in the good category). Critical thinking skills improved significantly, with pretest and posttest averages of 56.7 and 84.3, respectively, and an N-Gain score of 0.63 (moderate improvement). The novelty of this research lies in integrating PjBL into structured teaching materials that directly target critical thinking indicators, which were not thoroughly addressed in prior studies. In conclusion, the developed PjBL-based teaching materials are valid, practical, and effective in fostering critical thinking, and they provide an innovative contribution to physics education by offering a model that prepares students to meet 21st-century academic and professional challenges.
