Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of spatial thinking skills and environmental care characteristics in geography learning. This study aims to test the effect of the Earthcomm learning model on spatial thinking skills and environmental care characters of grade X students at. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design. The subjects of the study involved 72 students who were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through three instruments: a spatial thinking essay test (10 questions), an environmental care character strengthening questionnaire (30 questions), and Student Worksheets (LKPD) compiled based on the Earthcomm model syntax. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity prerequisite tests, hypothesis tests with simple linear regression, simple correlation tests, and N Gain Score tests. The results showed that the Earthcomm learning model had a significant effect on spatial thinking skills and environmental care characteristics. Simple correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between spatial thinking skills and environmental care characters. However, the N Gain Score test in the experimental group showed an effectiveness of 47.9%, which is included in the less effective category. The limited time for implementing the model in the independent curriculum is one of the factors that influence these results. This study concludes that the Earthcomm model has the potential to improve spatial thinking skills and environmental care characteristics, although its implementation requires further adjustment. These findings provide implications for the development of more effective learning models in supporting both aspects, especially in the context of a dynamic curriculum.

Abstract

This research aims to map the landscape of personalized learning in basic education through bibliometric analysis. The data used in this study was taken from the Scopus database, covering publications from 2004 to 2023. Using bibliometric analysis methods assisted by Vos Viewer, this research explores trends, publication patterns, and key topics that emerge in research related to personalized learning in elementary school level. The study results include 3 major theme clusters, namely Teachers, Schools and Learning Environment. Teachers, schools, and learning environments are three important pillars in a personalized learning approach, complementing each other to create meaningful learning experiences. The teacher acts as a key facilitator who designs learning methods according to the needs of each student. Schools provide policies, infrastructure and systemic support to support the implementation of personalized learning. The learning environment includes physical, social and technological components that encourage students to learn independently and collaboratively. Thoroughly understanding these three components is crucial for developing effective and relevant strategies in advancing personalized learning at the basic education level. Further exploration is needed on technological approaches in personalized learning, case-based research in specific schools, the role of feedback and teacher evaluation. These findings are important for understanding how learning innovations can be more effectively implemented in basic education contexts.

Abstract

Geography learning can be conducted with an Earthcomm learning model covering cognitive and affective skills. Solving these environmental challenges requires geographic and environmental literacy. This research evaluates the effectiveness of the Earthcomm model in enhancing spatial thinking and environmental care for high school students in Bululawang. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests randomly assigned 72 students to experimental and control groups. Instruments used were a 10-question spatial thinking essay, a 30-question environmental care survey, and Earthcomm-based worksheets. Analysis showed significant effects of the educational intervention on spatial thinking (p = 0.000) and environmental care (p = 0.023). Thus, a statistically significant correlation exists between those variables (p= 0,000), indicating that improving spatial skills may lead to greater environmental responsibility. The N Gain Score (NGS) assessment reveals that this model, with 47.9% NGS, is "less effective" in superior improvement due to the less implementation period in the syllabus, which necessitates further utilization and modification of the syllabus to guarantee effectivity. Despite such limitations, the findings have important implications for the Earthcomm model and its potential use in geography education, particularly in promoting spatial thinking and environmental care. This adds a small but important contribution to the limited literature on innovative geography curricula, illustrating how this model can equip students to meet the challenges of current global environmental issues. However, more attention will be paid to iterating, expanding, and applying the Earthcomm model to foster these skills.
