Abstract

Lavender is a plant that has various potentials to be developed in various therapeutic aspects, especially as an immunomodulator. Lavender oil is an active ingredient that has quite a lot of potential to be developed as the latest therapeutic agent where its use can be used by inhalation, aromatherapy massage, aromatherapeutic baths, and saunas. The results of metabolomic analysis from previous research results lavender contains alpha-pinene (0.44%), camphene (0.30%), beta-pinene (0.41%), beta mycene (1.11%), acetic acid (0. .74%), limonene (1.50%), cineole (4.72), linalool (36.55%), camphor (3.16%), terpinine-4-ol (2.07%), linalyl acetate (32.54), geranyl acetate (1.79%), nerly acetate (1.14%), and caryophyllene (7.55%). Thyme can decrease the production and gene expression of pro-inflammatory mediators, including Tumor Necrosis Factor-? (TNF-?), interleukin-(IL) 1B, and IL-6, and increase the marker for the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Chamomile is also used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Borage has gamma linoleic acid, which suppresses TNF-?. It increases prostaglandin-E levels leading to augmentation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Efforts need to be made to develop lavender as a herbal therapeutic in the context of modern plant biotechnology through a primordial stage (callus) tissue culture approach, biotic elicitors, and Cas-9.

Abstract

White turmeric is a medicinal plant widely used to treat various diseases. The limited availability of white turmeric seedlings is influenced by the scarcity of quality seeds due to the long dormancy of the rhizomes and the high incidence of pathogen attacks. Tissue culture techniques are one alternative to address the problem of white turmeric seedling availability. This study aims to determine the best concentrations of meta-topolin and kinetin for in vitro shoot multiplication of white turmeric. The research was conducted from January to June 2022 at the tissue culture laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of 7 treatments: control (0 mg L-1), meta-topolin (1 mg L-1; 2 mg L-1; 3 mg L-1), kinetin (1 mg L-1; 2 mg L-1; 3 mg L-1). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s multiple range test were used to analyze the statistical effects of meta-topolin and kinetin application. Applying 1 mg L-1 meta-topolin yielded the best results for shoot number, indicating that 1 mg L-1 meta-topolin is a potential cytokinin for the propagation of Curcuma zedoaria Rosc.

Abstract

Tuberose (Polyanthes tuberosa L.) is a potential flowering plant that will be developed in Jatinangor, West Java, Indonesia. However, the characteristics of Typic Hapludult soil in Jatinangor , i.e. clay texture, acidic pH, and high amount of total-P but low in available-P cause the tuberose difficult to grow optimally. The aim of this study was to obtain the potential ratio of organic and inorganic fertilizer dosages for tuberose grown on Typic Hapludult. The combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizers with different ratios (0/0; 0/1; 1/0; 0.5/0.5; 0.5/1; 1/0.5; 1/1.5; 1.5/0; 1.5/0.5, and 1.5/) were applied. The application of the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers showed positive effects on soil pH, available-P, total-P, and fresh weight of tuberose grown on Typic Hapludult. The application of 50% organic fertilizer + 50% inorganic fertilizer was an effective combination that was able to increase the fresh weight of tuberose up to 9240 g plant-1 or increasing the fresh weight by 39% in comparison to that in the control treatment (without fertilizer application).

Abstract

Roses are known as a high-value commodity frequently used in various important events. However, they are susceptible to postharvest quality deterioration, which can affect their vase life and appearance. In this study, roses with a blooming stage of approximately 25–50% were immersed in melatonin and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) solutions at different concentrations. This research aims to analyze the effect of melatonin and BAP application on the freshness of cut roses. The parameters observed included flower vase life, flower wilting angle, increase in flower diameter, fresh weight, solution uptake, and chlorophyll content. The results showed that melatonin and BAP, applied individually or in combination, effectively extended the freshness of cut roses by up to eight days by maintaining solution uptake, flower quality, and chlorophyll content. This study provides new insights for farmers and researchers in improving the quality and longevity of cut roses through the use of plant hormones, particularly cytokinin.

Abstract

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is widely used in traditional medicine due to its rich content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. However, the natural production of these metabolites is limited. Callus culture offers a controlled method to enhance their accumulation, with medium composition, particularly precursor supplementation, playing a critical role. Phenylalanine, an aromatic amino acid, is a key precursor in the biosynthesis of phenolics and flavonoids via the shikimate pathway. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of phenylalanine on callus growth and the accumulation of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds in basil. The experiment was conducted at the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, using Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with phenylalanine concentrations of 0, 1.3, 1.6, and 2 g.L-1, each replicated six times. Results showed that phenylalanine treatments caused brown coloration, compact callus texture, and inhibited growth, as indicated by reduced fresh and dry weights. The 1.6 g.L-1 treatment produced the highest total phenolic content, while the 2 g.L-1 treatment yielded the highest flavonoid content. These findings suggest that phenylalanine can enhance secondary metabolite accumulation in basil callus, although it may suppress biomass growth.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of farmer group dynamics on the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in the cultivation of red chili in Sukajaya District, Bogor Regency. Red chili is an important commodity that maintains the stability of the national economy which is vulnerable to fluctuations in price and production. Data shows that there has been a decrease in the productivity of red chili in Sukajaya District despite an increase at the regency level, indicating that the application of GAP is not yet optimal. Using a descriptive quantitative approach and multiple linear regression analysis, this study involved 101 respondents from farmer group members. The results showed that the factors that significantly influenced the application of GAP were group task function, group objectives, guidance, group structure, effectiveness, and pressure, with a contribution of 72.2%. Characteristically, the majority of farmers are men (94%), of productive age 36-45 years (34.7%), with elementary school education (38.6%), very experienced in farming (40.6%), and have sufficiently productive land (41.6%). The strategy to increase the dynamics of farmer groups to optimize the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) needs to pay attention to these factors, especially the function of group tasks that have the greatest influence, through training, technical guidance, counseling, and routine monitoring.
