Abstract

The intermolecular force is one of the chemistry topics covered in the high school curriculum in Indonesia. As the characteristics of chemistry concepts in general, intermolecular forces concepts can be presented in the three levels of chemical representations (microscopic, symbolic, and macroscopic).  Currently, chemistry teaching materials are available in Indonesian schools mostly have limited support for helping students to visualize the molecular aspect of intermolecular forces concepts mainly in the form of three-dimensional space (3D). This study aimed to produce an E-Learning teaching material enriched with 3D Molecular Visualization. The product (teaching material) in this study is presented by considering the syntax of guided inquiry-based learning. The product was developed with the procedure adopted from Lee and Owens, including assessment/analysis, need assessment, front-end analysis, design, and development. The product is valid and suitable to be applied in online chemistry teaching. However, further study to investigate the effectiveness of this product empirically need to be explored in the future.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, learning is done online. Many students experience difficulties and decreased learning achievement while carrying out online learning. The reaction rate practicum learning media used at the high school level does not yet represent macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic chemical concepts and has not been adapted to online learning. Multiple chemical representations can be applied using android-based learning media so that students are expected to understand the concepts in the reaction rate practicum. Android-based learning media is used to support the learning process. The purpose of developing android-based learning media on the reaction rate practicum concept is to produce android-based learning media and determine its feasibility. The development model used is the 4-D model by Thiagarajan, et al. The product developed in the form of an android-based reaction rate practicum learning media for students at senior high school. Based on the validation results indicate that the module is very feasible to use by meeting the percentage of 88.8%. The results of the readability test on the module obtained a percentage of 84.5%, so based on this assessment the module is very suitable for students to use as a learning resource and learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

The present study outlines the development and validation of a four-tier diagnostic instrument to explore first year undergraduate students’ understanding of chemical kinetics (FTDICK). The four-tier instrument is a recent format and has been applied only sparsely in a limited number of subject areas, not including chemical kinetics. This study confirms the importance of a four-tier approach in fully investigating students’ poor knowledge and understanding. The FTDICK described here involves 20 questions with a confidence level linked to both the question tier and the reason tier. The development of the instrument followed the procedure used for the two-tier instrument developed by Treagust and involves (1) testing & interviewing, (2) identifying & collecting students’ unscientific ideas, (3) developing the prototype FTDICK, (4) validating the prototype FTDICK, and (5) developing the final FTDICK. The initial steps revealed a number of areas of misconceptions to be explored in the final instrument. The instrument has been developed and the prototype tested using international cohorts of students from the University of Reading, UK and two Indonesian Universities. Comprehensive item analysis on the results showed the instrument to be valid and reliable and suitable for identifying students’ understanding of chemical kinetics. This study confirms the importance of a four-tier approach for investigating students’ prior knowledge and understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the literature on the need for Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL)-based modules as the main solution to improving the critical thinking skills of grade 7 students. The results of research and international surveys such as PISA show that the critical thinking ability profile of Indonesian students is inadequate. This phenomenon is caused by teachers still focusing on learning outcomes that show indicators of student learning mastery, while students are not allowed to explore knowledge and relate science concepts in everyday life. This has an impact on the concepts taught are still less meaningful and rote, and student’s understanding of concepts is still low causing students' process skills in critical thinking cannot be exploited. The right learning media needs to be chosen by an educator to improve critical thinking skills, namely Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) based modules. This research is qualitative.  The instruments used in this research are interview tests for teachers and an analysis of the needs of students at Junior High School 8 Malang, Indonesia. The method used is a literature review, interviews, and observing the teachers and students in learning science at Junior High School 8 Malang. Based on the literature review, an ideal solution was obtained to solve the problem, namely an update to a more ideal learning process, namely learning media in the form of e-modules based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) that can link the learning materials studied in schools with facts that students encounter in everyday life.
