Abstract

The film Wadjda (2012), directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, tells the story of a Saudi girl who rebels against gender norms with her ambition to obtain a green bicycle. This study examines Wadjda's psychological journey in fulfilling Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs—from basic needs, safety, love and esteem, to self-actualization—within a feminist framework. The method used is a semiotic text analysis of key scenes, combined with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results show that Wadjda's simple act of riding a bicycle becomes a symbol of women's independence and freedom in a patriarchal society, marking the phase of self-actualization. Meanwhile, the roles of the family, school, and patriarchal society reveal the overlapping dynamics of security and self-esteem needs. This study is significant as it enriches feminist scholarship with Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory in Arab countries from a psychological perspective, and offers a new perspective for analyzing non-Western films within gender and developmental psychology discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of sexual violence against women in the Egyptian social drama Cairo 678 (2010), employing Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film was chosen for its bold exploration of the critical issue of sexual violence in Cairo’s public spaces and women’s resistance against it. Using Barthes’ framework of denotation, connotation, and myth, this research aims to reveal how the film’s visual and narrative signs depict sexual violence while dismantling patriarchal myths that normalize such acts. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of scenes, dialogues, and audiovisual elements from Cairo 678. Data collection techniques include documentation-based observation and literature review. Barthes’ semiotic analysis is applied through stages of sign identification, denotation (literal meaning), connotation (cultural and emotional meaning), and myth (naturalized ideology). The findings demonstrate that Cairo 678 explicitly portrays various forms of sexual violence against women, ranging from non-verbal harassment and physical assault to severe collective sexual violence. This representation operates not only at the denotative level but also constructs powerful connotations of victim helplessness, anger, and trauma, while critiquing the failures of social and legal systems.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the construction of the identity of Pemuda Persis cadres as embodied in the song Mars Pemuda Pembela Agama by Suraedi through the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a semiotic theoretical approach based on Roland Barthes' framework. This approach is chosen to uncover the symbolic meanings within the lyrics of Pemuda Pembela Agama as a representation of the ideological identity of Pemuda Persis cadres. The data analysis technique follows Barthes’ semiotic model, which includes denotative analysis to uncover the literal meaning of the lyrics, connotative analysis to interpret meaning based on the cultural and ideological context of the organization, and myth analysis to explore how the ideological message is naturally accepted by the organization’s members. The song Pemuda Pembela Agama by Suraedi represents the identity of Pemuda Persis cadres through Barthes’ semiotic approach, from literal to ideological meaning. Its lyrics emphasize the role of youth as pioneers of Islamic preaching (dakwah) and social transformation with intellectual strength grounded in the Qur'an and Hadith. Through connotation and myth, the cadres are portrayed as guardians of Islamic purity, reformers, and intellectual fortresses of the Muslim community. This song is not merely a formal symbol but serves as an ideological instrument to shape cadres with religious, intellectual, militant, and socially driven character.

Abstract

This study examines the forms of tasybih (simile) found in the poem Araqqu ‘alā araqin wa mithli ya‘raqu by Al-Mutanabbi and the purposes of their usage, viewed through the lens of balaghah, specifically the branch of ‘ilm al-bayan. The poem is selected for its deep emotional expression conveyed through aesthetic and rhetorical language devices, particularly similes. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach and uses library research as the main data collection technique. The data consist of poetic lines containing elements of tasybih, which are analyzed to identify the types—such as tasybih mursal, muakkad, tamtsil, and dhamniy—and to interpret their meanings and functions within the poetic context. The results show that Al-Mutanabbi uses tasybih not only as an element of linguistic beauty but also as a means to intensify emotional expression, clarify the nature of the musyabbah, affirm qualitative meanings, and enhance the persuasive and imaginative impact of the poem. Thus, the use of tasybih in this poem demonstrates Al-Mutanabbi’s mastery in combining aesthetic power and depth of meaning through classical Arabic structures.

Abstract

This research discusses the meaning contained in the poem Urīduki Unṡā by Nizar Qabbani through Michael Riffaterre's semiotic framework. The method used in this research is an analytical descriptive method based on a qualitative paradigm. The researcher uses the concept of heuristic and hermeneutic reading in revealing the meaning of the poetry. The result of this research is that the poetry tells the story of how great someone's hopes are for women. These hopes reflect not only admiration, but also a deep longing for women to be seen as complete, independent, and dignified individuals. The poem emphasizes the emotional, intellectual, and symbolic significance of women in human life. It portrays women as central figures who possess the power to inspire, nurture, and elevate the human spirit. Through poetic language and imagery, Qabbani conveys that women are not merely objects of affection, but rather living representations of beauty, strength, and the greatest wonder of the world for someone.

Abstract

This study investigates linguistic errors found in the abstracts of undergraduate theses written by students of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 50 thesis abstracts and identified 60 language errors categorized into three main types: phonological and morphological errors, morphological and syntactic errors, and syntactic and semantic errors. The findings show that the most common phonological error involves the incorrect use of hamzah, reflecting a lack of adherence to Arabic orthographic conventions. Morphological and syntactic errors consist of inaccurate verb conjugations, incorrect noun forms, and sentence structures that deviate from standard Arabic grammar. Semantic errors appear as vague or incoherent expressions, frequently resulting from syntactic mistakes and inappropriate word choices. The study identifies three principal causes of these errors: insufficient mastery of Arabic grammar and morphology, limited vocabulary prompting reliance on unchecked translation tools, and inadequate supervisory feedback from academic advisors. This research highlights the urgent need to strengthen Arabic academic writing instruction and encourages more active lecturer involvement to ensure that students' theses meet both academic and linguistic standards.

Abstract

This research discusses oppression of women and the patriarchal system in Nawal el Saadawi's novel Catatan Dari Penjara Perempauan uses a radical feminism approach. The novel shows how women experience structural repression institutionalized by the state, religion, and patriarchal culture. The female characters in the novel are depicted as subjects whose bodies and minds are controlled by the system of power, but also show various forms of active resistance to this domination. Through symbolic actions, verbal expressions, and legal awareness, they dismantle oppressive power relations. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with literature study techniques on the text of the novel as the main data source. The analysis was conducted by identifying forms of oppression and women's resistance reflected in the novel's narrative. The radical feminism approach is used because it is able to unravel the ideological roots of oppression against women, especially through control over women's bodies and expressions in a patriarchal system and authoritarian regime. The results show that this novel is not only a record of Nawal El Saadawi's personal experience, but also an ideological field of resistance to systemic patriarchal power. Thus, this study emphasizes the role of literature as a medium of social criticism and a space for struggle for gender equality.

Abstract

The research found that this song contains profound symbols related to spiritual love. The symbol of the heart or qalb is the center of the marker in the semiotics of love in this text. This paper aims to analyze the representation of double meaning in the song Qolbi Fiil Madinah by Maher Zain using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The three levels of meaning-denotation, connotation, and myth-illustrate the complexity of understanding a text. This song was chosen because it contains strong religious symbolism and conveys spiritual messages through lyrics that are rich in denotative and connotative meanings. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with Barthes' semiotic analysis technique that includes three stages of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that the song lyrics represent spiritual longing for the Prophet Muhammad SAW and the City of Medina through metaphors, symbols, and poetic diction. The city of Medina is not only interpreted as a geographical place, but also as a symbol of peace of mind and spiritual closeness. Shalawat becomes a semiotic form to convey love for the Prophet Muhammad. The song also functions as a medium of da'wah that conveys religious values and love for the Prophet in an aesthetic and emotional form. This finding shows that religious music can be an effective means of cultural and spiritual communication in modern society. This research is expected to broaden the horizons in the study of literature, music and semiotics, and become a reference in understanding the multiple meanings contained in contemporary Islamic artworks.

Abstract

Film has the ability to convey implicit messages through its visual imagery. Capernaum, therefore, presents various forms of criticism, values, and norms. Directed by Nadine Labaki, this film portrays powerful messages of humanity and offers sharp social criticism in response to the realities faced by marginalized communities in large cities. The purpose of this study is to examine the social criticism presented in the film Capernaum. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, as well as a quantitative approach, based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. The researcher will carefully select specific scenes that reflect the concept of self-meaning. These scenes will then be analyzed in terms of their meaning through the components of sign, object, and interpretant as found in the film. The findings of this research reveal that Capernaum contains various forms of social criticism, including criticism of child exploitation, structural poverty, social class inequality, domestic violence, and the involvement of children in drug trafficking
