Abstract

Snakefruit (Salacca zalacca) is one of Indonesian native plant that the pericarp of snakefruit can be used because it has activity as an antimicrobial. This study aims to identify the metabolite content of snakefruit pericarp and to investigate the potential of snakefruit pericarp extracts in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. Snakefruit pericarp was extracted by reflux method using ethanol 96%, and an extract was tested by phytochemical qualitatively and antimicrobial activity of extract was carried out using the well method, by using concentrations are 5, 10, 15, and 20%. The results showed that the extracts contains secondary metabolites i.e. alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. Extract of snakefruit pericarp can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans at 5% concentration and the inhibiting activity increased together with higher concentrations of extract.

Abstract

Chalcone is a compound that has various biological activities. The organic synthesis approach has been widely used to obtain chalcone compouds. The aim of this research is to select the main parameters which influence chalcone synthesis. This study was conducted using Plackett-Burman experimental design. Of eleven parameters used, eight of them showed a significant effect on the yield of chalcones namely temperature, reaction time, mole number of benzaldehyde, volume of acetophenone solvent, incubation time, volume of distilled water, volume of benzaldehyde solvent, catalyst volume and dummy. In addition, the highest yield is 32.43%.

Abstract

Chalcone are compounds that have 2 aromatic rings connected by 3 carbon atoms which are an ?, ? unsaturated carbonyl system that have various biological activities. 2'-hydroxy-5'-chloro-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxicalcone was synthesized from 2'-hydroxy-5'-chloro acetophenone and syringaldehyde using a NaOH catalyst. This compound was purified using Column Chromatography by isocratic method using n-hexane:ethyl acetate (15:1) as eluent. This compound has a Rf 0.75 and 2.7% of yield.

Abstract

Senyawa kalkon adalah salah satu senyawa metabolit sekunder yang banyak ditemukan di alam dengan berbagai macam aktivitas biologis diantaranya sebagai antioksidan, antikanker, antiinflamasi, sitosoksik, antivirus serta antibakteri. Mekanisme antibakteri senyawa turunan kalkon berbasis 4-asetil terhadap bakteri Bacillus subtilis dan Escherichia coli dipejari melalui metode docking. Senyawa kalkon 3-(3-metoksi-4-hidroksifenil)-1-(piridin-4-il)-prop-2-en-1-on, 3-(4-hidroksifenil)-1-(piridin-4-il)-prop-2-en-1-on, 3-(4–metoksifenil)-1-(piridin-4-il)-prop-2-en-1-on menunjukkan aktivitas antibakteri yang baik dengan berikatan kompleks terhadap asam amino pada bakteri Bacillus subtilis pada Arg A389, Asp A164, Ser A299, Tyr A149, REZ C500, Asn A301, dan Asn A397, sedangkan pada bakteri Escherichia coli pada Leu 140 dan Gln 170..

Abstract

Chalcone has been widely reported to have various activities such as cytotoxic, antioxidant, antibacterial, and others. Synthesis becames the right way to get chalcone because it can produce much yield of chalcone and can be varied in accordance with the desired structure. The compound of 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propenone was synthesized by conventional method for 6 hours using a 40% NaOH catalyst with a yield of 90.87%. The toxicity test of 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propanone was done by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test method (BSLT). The results of the test showed that the 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3- (3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propenone has toxicity value LC50 613.05 ppm.

Abstract

The application of PBL-STEM can encourage students to be independent in the learning process and emphasize the process of thinking critically and analytically to seek and find answers to a problem in question. This study used a true–experimental design with the Posttest Only Control Design type. The population in this study were all students of class XI SMA Kristen Sunodia Samarinda for the academic year 2022/2023 divided into 2 classes. This study aims to determine the effect of PBL-STEM in improving students' critical thinking skills. Sampling was done by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to measure students' critical thinking skills in chemistry were post-test questions, teacher and student observation sheets, and student response sheets (questionnaire). Data analysis was performed by t-test. The results of the t-test with Mann-Whitney obtained sig. (2-tailed) in both classes is 0.00 <0.05, it is concluded that Ha accepted the statement that there is an effect of the application of PBL-STEM on the critical thinking skills of class XI students at Christian Senior High School Sunodia Samarinda regarding reaction rates. The results of the teacher and student activity sheets in the experimental class were both in very good categories, as well as the student response to PBL-STEM learning, namely 77.2% of students agreed with the application of PBL-STEM in learning which can train students' critical thinking skills. This research discusses the analysis of how effective the influence of PBL and STEM integration is to improve critical thinking skills on reaction rate material so that this research can be used as a reference for applying PBL-STEM to other chemistry topics.

Abstract

Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate (CSH) with uniform morphology and high crystallinity were successfully prepared by a precipitation-hydrolysis method in a concentrated sulfuric acid solution containing fishbone-derived carbon. The CSH was produced by carbonization of fishbone powder at 500 °C for 2 h, followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulfuric acid for 3 h. The solid mixture was washed until the pH of 2, then left at room temperature for 3 days. Physical properties of synthesized CSH were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, and melting point test. It is concluded that the CSH were formed due to hydrolysis of fishbone-derived carbon in a moderately concentrated sulfuric acid solution of carbon-derived fishbone and crystallization into a fibrous octa calcium phosphate (OCP) form. In this research, effect of crystal growth time, effect of pH during the crystal growth, and effect of volume of the solution were also investigated. Abstract

Science and technology evolved with the times and has very important influence in various aspects of life, one of them is the aspect in education. Utilization of science and technology in education can be applied through innovation in developing learning media. Gamification-based learning media is a game designed as a learning instrument. Gamification is one of the learning media innovations that can be utilized in chemistry learning for increase motivation and student learning outcomes. The writing of this literature review purposed for examining the development of gamification learning media in chemistry learning. The method used in this literature review is narrative literature review by collecting data of article related to gamification learning media that published within a period 2014-2023. Data analysis is carried using an simplified approach. The articles used in this literature review were 51 articles from accredited national and international journals obtained from Google Scholar. Based on the result of the literature review, it was found that gamification learning media can increase student motivation in chemistry learning. Gamification can also motivate teacher to innovate in creating learning media that can interest student. Therefore, gamification can be a new trend in chemistry learning. Abstract

The oil palm is a widely cultivated plant recognized by the public for its production of industrial raw materials for everyday use. Oil palm is rich in potential antioxidant activity, primarily due to its high content of phenolic and flavonoid compunds. This research aimed to assess the levels of total phenolic and flavonoid compunds in oil palm fruit. The extract sample was examined using the UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method, with the total phenolic measured at 744.8 nm, the total flavoinoid content at 440.  The findigs indicated that the total phenolic content in the oil palm fruit extract was 1.46 mg/L while the total flavonoid content was 5.81 mg/L.

Abstract

Pembelajaran kimia di sekolah sering kali menghadapi tantangan akibat kurangnya variasi dan diferensiasi dalam proses, produk, dan konten pembelajaran. Siswa memerlukan pendekatan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan, minat, dan kemampuan yang berbeda-beda. Kajian literatur ini mengeksplorasi peran Artificial Intelligence (AI) sebagai solusi untuk mendukung strategi pembelajaran berdiferensiasi pada mata pelajaran kimia di sekolah. Kajian literatur menggunakan narrative literature review bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan merangkum artikel-artikel yang telah dipublikasikan sebelumnya tanpa ada kritikan terhadap artikel yang ditinjau. AI memiliki peranan besar dalam meningkatkan pembelajaran kimia, namun peran guru tetap penting. Kombinasi antara kecerdasan buatan dan pendekatan manusia dapat memberikan hasil pembelajaran yang optimal. AI memiliki kelebihan dalam menyajikan materi personal dan mendukung pembelajaran berbasis diferensiasi. Kajian literatur ini diharapkan dapat memberikan panduan bagi pendidik dan pengembang kurikulum untuk memanfaatkan AI secara optimal dalam mencapai pembelajaran diferensiasi yang efektif dan inklusif di bidang kimia.
