Abstract

This study investigated whether the OIDDE learning model could improve tenth-grade students’ critical thinking skills and scientific literacy in biology, particularly in ecosystem and environmental change topics. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design was used with 58 students from MAN Ende, East Nusa Tenggara. The experimental class was taught through the OIDDE stages, whereas the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected using essay-based critical thinking tests and multiple-choice scientific literacy tests. The results showed that students in the experimental class achieved higher post-test scores in critical thinking skills (M = 83.40) than those in the control class (M = 59.29). The experimental class also obtained a high N-gain score of 72.29% and a very large effect size (d = 2.75). A similar result was found for scientific literacy, with the experimental class achieving a higher mean score (M = 85.33) than the control class (M = 55.71), a high N-gain score of 76.10%, and a very large effect size (d = 2.87). The statistical results confirmed significant differences between the two groups (p < .001). These findings suggest that OIDDE provides a structured learning pathway that helps students examine biological problems, discuss evidence, make decisions, and connect learning with responsible behavior. Efektivitas Model Pembelajaran OIDDE dalam Meningkatkan Keterampilan Berpikir Kritis dan Literasi Sains Siswa Kelas X pada Materi Ekosistem dan Perubahan Lingkungan ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini mengkaji apakah model pembelajaran OIDDE dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir kritis dan literasi sains siswa kelas X dalam pembelajaran biologi, khususnya pada materi ekosistem dan perubahan lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kuasi eksperimen dengan pola pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group yang melibatkan 58 siswa dari MAN Ende, Nusa Tenggara Timur. Kelas eksperimen diajar melalui tahapan OIDDE, sedangkan kelas kontrol memperoleh pembelajaran konvensional. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes berpikir kritis berbasis esai dan tes literasi sains berbentuk pilihan ganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa pada kelas eksperimen memperoleh skor post-test keterampilan berpikir kritis yang lebih tinggi (M = 83,40) dibandingkan siswa pada kelas kontrol (M = 59,29). Kelas eksperimen juga memperoleh skor N-gain tinggi sebesar 72,29% dan effect size yang sangat besar (d = 2,75). Hasil serupa juga ditemukan pada literasi sains, dengan kelas eksperimen memperoleh skor rata-rata yang lebih tinggi (M = 85,33) dibandingkan kelas kontrol (M = 55,71), skor N-gain tinggi sebesar 76,10%, dan effect size yang sangat besar (d = 2,87). Hasil statistik mengonfirmasi adanya perbedaan yang signifikan antara kedua kelompok (p < 0,001). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa OIDDE menyediakan alur pembelajaran terstruktur yang membantu siswa mengkaji permasalahan biologi, mendiskusikan bukti, mengambil keputusan, dan menghubungkan pembelajaran dengan perilaku yang bertanggung jawab.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the evolution of botanical literacy research over the last decade, based on 32 Scopus-indexed studies. Nine research questions (RQs) explore publication trends, geographical distribution, subject areas, funding sponsors, co-occurring keywords, influencing factors, effective strategies, and emerging themes. Data collection followed the PRISMA protocol, with bibliometric analysis and VOSviewer used to explore trends, while Scopus AI facilitated thematic and content analysis. The analysis identified a sevenfold increase in publication volume from 2017 to 2024, with notable peaks in 2022 (n=7) and 2024 (n=7). These findings reflect a growing academic recognition of the crucial role plants play in tackling global environmental challenges. The United States and the United Kingdom lead in research, while Asian countries such as Indonesia remain underrepresented (less than 5% of total publications), highlighting the need for a more inclusive, global approach. The study also reveals the interdisciplinary nature of botanical literacy, encompassing environmental sciences, agriculture, social sciences, and fields like computer science and psychology. Key factors influencing botanical literacy include lack of interest, poor educational materials, and ineffective teaching methods. Effective strategies identified include inquiry-based learning and integrating botanical education into daily life. Emerging themes emphasize “Scientific Literacy in Environmental Contexts” as a recurring focus, reinforcing the relevance of botanical literacy in environmental education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the OIDDE (Orientation, Identify, Discussion, Decision, and Engage in Behavior) learning model on virus material on students' problem-solving and ethical decision-making abilities in class X at SMAN 2 Sampit. The background of this study is based on the dominance of teacher-centered learning, which has not optimally developed students' higher-order thinking skills and ethical awareness. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 70 students, divided into an experimental class and a control class. Data were collected through problem-solving tests and ethical decision-making questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that the experimental class achieved a higher mean posttest score in problem-solving ability (M = 87.00) compared to the control class (M = 73.86), with a significant difference (p < 0.05). The N-Gain score in the experimental class was 64.66% (moderate category), and the effect size was very large (Cohen’s d = 2.916). In terms of ethical decision-making, the experimental class also showed higher posttest scores (M = 90.49) than the control class (M = 85.66), with a significant difference (p = 0.012 < 0.05) and a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.139). These findings suggest that the OIDDE learning model has a positive effect on improving students’ problem-solving and ethical decision-making abilities. However, further studies with larger samples are recommended to strengthen the generalizability of the results.

Abstract

This study explores how the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) through Smart TV/Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) technology was perceived by students and teachers as a classroom-based psycho-pedagogical support mechanism for Grade X students at SMAN 1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan, East Kotawaringin, Indonesia. While AI in education is commonly examined as a cognitive tool for personalized instruction, less attention has been paid to its affective and communal roles in strengthening students' coping experiences, emotional safety, and willingness to revise mistakes. The study was conducted during one semester from October 2025 to February 2026 in Grade X learning activities involving English, history, coding, and informatics lessons. The AI tools used included ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, or school-approved AI assistant, which were accessed through teacher-led and student-assisted classroom routines and displayed on Smart TV/IFP screens. This study employed a descriptive qualitative case-study design involving 21 informants: 15 Grade X students and six supporting school informants consisting of the vice principal for curriculum affairs, counseling teacher, and subject teachers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observation, digital documentation, and learning artifacts, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings reveal three central mechanisms. First, AI served as a non-judgmental dialogic partner that helped students break down difficult tasks, regulate frustration, and recover from academic setbacks. Second, the large-screen display created a Digital Mirroring Effect, in which the visible process of AI-supported trial, error, and revision normalized mistakes and encouraged a growth mindset. Third, teacher and counselor facilitation transformed AI-Smart TV integration into a safer classroom ecology that reduced academic anxiety and improved students' perceived psychological well-being. However, a negative case also indicated the risk of digital dependency when AI was used merely to copy answers. The study proposes AI-Augmented Resilience and Digital Mirroring Effect as interpretive, case-based psycho-pedagogical mechanisms,emphasizing that AI is most educationally productive when mediated by shared visualization, ethical guidance, and authentic assessment.

Abstract

The declining intergenerational use of the Tidung language in multicultural Tarakan has made elementary-school local-content learning an important but underexamined space for language revitalization. This study analyzes how Tidung language learning is implemented as local content in Grade 5 at SDN 028 Tarakan and how policy actors, school stakeholders, families, and customary institutions interact in supporting or constraining revitalization. A descriptive qualitative case-study design was used, with SDN 028 Tarakan selected as a bounded case because it represents an urban multicultural school where Tidung is formally taught although many students do not use it in daily home communication. Data were collected from August to October 2025 through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving 22 informants: one principal, one Grade 5 teacher, twelve Grade 5 students, four parents, two Education Office representatives, and two Tidung customary leaders. The analytical focus was the policy-to-practice translation of Tidung local-content learning, particularly curriculum implementation, teacher readiness, student engagement, material availability, and home/community language support. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings reveal four central themes: strong policy and stakeholder support, teacher-led adaptation under material constraints, positive but mostly receptive student engagement, and an ecosystem gap between school learning and home/community language use. Concrete classroom evidence showed that students were able to repeat greetings, name daily objects, and sing simple Tidung songs, but they rarely initiated spontaneous Tidung dialogue without teacher prompting. Teachers compensated for the lack of standardized books and audio materials by preparing vocabulary sheets, using classroom objects, and adapting songs and short stories. Parents and customary leaders supported the program culturally, but home use remained limited because many families used Indonesian or other ethnic languages in daily interaction. The study proposes a policy-to-practice revitalization model in which local regulation must be followed by standardized materials, systematic teacher training, participatory cultural resources, technology-based media, and family-community language practices. Its novelty lies in showing that, in a multicultural urban setting, school-based local-language revitalization functions first as institutional legitimization and cultural awareness building, but it cannot develop young active speakers unless school exposure is connected with family routines, community validation, and authentic communicative domains.

Abstract

Micro-scale urban green infrastructure provides localized ecosystem services, yet quantifying its carbon dynamics remains a methodological challenge due to satellite resolution limits and the structural assumptions of generalized models. This study evaluates carbon stock distribution across 68 individual trees within a heterogeneous 0.8-hectare institutional urban forest at a microcatchment resolution, analyzing the validity of pantropical allometry.  The stand exhibits an estimated mean carbon density of 45.38 Mg C/ha, totaling 36.34 Mg. Critically, the high coefficient of determination value of 0.9422 primarily reflects structural dependency within the allometric formulation rather than independent ecological variability. Furthermore, the Gini coefficient value of 0.654 confirms severe structural biomass asymmetry. The carbon pool is disproportionately concentrated within a limited cohort of exactly 6 Large Old Trees with a diameter exceeding 60 cm, predominantly Samanea saman. Census data reveals that the top 5% of the largest individuals manage 28.3% of the vegetative carbon, while the top 10% and top 20% control 47.3% and 66.2% of the cumulative reservoir, respectively. Within this micro-forest, inverted J-shaped diameter distributions were insufficient to ensure evenly distributed carbon storage. Consequently, urban green planning must prioritize the targeted retention of dominant biomass anchors over raw sapling quantity. Preserving these established large trees contributes significantly to institutional carbon governance, providing an empirical framework for sustainability metrics such as the UI GreenMetric.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high demands for student-centered learning in the 21st century, while the teaching of viruses at the secondary school level is still dominated by conventional memorization-oriented methods without linking abstract concepts to contextual scientific problems. The focus of this research problem is directed at testing the effectiveness of a contextual teaching module based on the OIDDE (Orientation, Identify, Discussion, Decision, and Engage in Behavior) model on improving students' conceptual understanding. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest control group design, the research's key stages were carried out in a structured manner through purposive sampling involving 70 10th-grade students at SMAN 2 Sampit. The experimental group received instruction using the OIDDE-based module, while the control group received conventional instruction. Quantitative data were collected using a multiple-choice test and analyzed inferentially through ANCOVA, N-Gain scores, and Cohen's d. The research findings showed that the experimental group achieved an average post-test score of 87.00, significantly exceeding the control group, which scored 73.86 based on the ANCOVA analysis (p < 0.05). The learning improvement was categorized as moderate, with an N-Gain value of 0.6466 and a Cohen's d effect size of 2.916, which is considered very strong. The main conclusion confirms that the integration of OIDDE-based contextual modules has proven effective and significantly improves students' conceptual understanding in teaching viruses. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tingginya tuntutan pembelajaran berpusat pada siswa di era abad ke-21, sementara pengajaran materi virus di tingkat sekolah menengah masih didominasi metode konvensional berorientasi hafalan tanpa mengaitkan konsep abstrak dengan masalah ilmiah kontekstual. Fokus masalah riset ini diarahkan pada pengujian efektivitas modul ajar kontekstual berbasis model OIDDE (Orientation, Identify, Discussion, Decision, and Engage in Behavior) terhadap peningkatan pemahaman konseptual para siswa. Menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen semu berbentuk pretest-posttest control group design, tahapan penting penelitian dijalankan secara terstruktur melalui purposive sampling yang melibatkan 70 siswa kelas X di SMAN 2 Sampit. Kelompok eksperimen mendapatkan pengajaran memanfaatkan modul berbasis OIDDE, sedangkan kelompok kontrol menerima instruksi konvensional. Data kuantitatif dihimpun menggunakan tes pilihan ganda yang dianalisis secara inferensial melalui uji ANCOVA, skor N-Gain, dan Cohen’s d. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen meraih skor rata-rata pascatest sebesar 87,00, secara signifikan melampaui kelompok kontrol yang memperoleh skor 73,86 berdasarkan hasil analisis ANCOVA (p < 0,05). Peningkatan pembelajaran berada pada kategori sedang dengan nilai N-Gain sebesar 0,6466 serta ukuran efek Cohen’s d sebesar 2,916 yang tergolong sangat kuat. Simpulan utama menegaskan bahwa integrasi modul kontekstual berbasis OIDDE terbukti efektif dan signifikan meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual peserta didik pada pengajaran materi virus.

Abstract

This article analyzes the integration model between science and religion in Malaysian and Indonesian Higher Education. So far, the dichotomy of science and religion is considered to be one of the causes for the exit of the Islamic world from the Western world. In this century, educational institutions in the Islamic world began to re-select the integration pattern of science. This study uses qualitative methods, by collecting data through observation, visiting two higher education institutions studied, and conducting in-depth interviews with relevant parties, namely the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Malaysia and Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in Indonesia. Data collection is also done by searching documents and referral sources in various data sources available online. From the research conducted, it was found that, integration carried out by Islamic universities in Malaysia and Indonesia was to open faculties and study programs without any religious or public claims. Everything is the same, and there are no restrictions on the rules for students based on religion to enter into it. So, education is inclusive, it can be for anyone. This model succeeded in advancing Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This descriptive study explored how Project-Based Learning (PjBL) was associated with indicators of learning independence among fifth-grade students in Integrated Science (IPAS) at Muhammadiyah 4 Batu Elementary School, Indonesia. Existing elementary PjBL research rarely examines behavioral indicators of learning independence or triangulates teacher, student, and observational data in IPAS contexts, creating a gap that this study seeks to address. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving 87 students (three Grade 5 classes) and three teachers. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, classroom observations, and document analysis, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, complemented with descriptive proportions from 3-point Likert scales. High scores were defined as ratings ≥3 (“always/consistent”) on a three-level rubric; thresholds were established through expert validation. The percentages reported in this study represent the proportion of students categorized as “High” according to these validated thresholds. Inter-rater agreement for observations reached κ = 0.86, indicating substantial consistency. Findings reveal that PjBL was associated with higher observed levels of responsibility, confidence, initiative, and discipline through hands-on projects, collaborative discussions, and reflective presentations. Quantitative descriptive data showed that 83.9% of students demonstrated high responsibility, 87.4% high confidence, and 86.2% high discipline. Teacher interviews confirmed that PjBL enhances student engagement, though time management remains a challenge. The study concludes that PjBL-based instruction corresponded with behavioral indicators of learning independence and 21st-century competencies. However, as a single-site, descriptive investigation, no causal inferences can be drawn. Future research should apply validated independence scales and multi-site designs.

Abstract

The December 2021 eruption of Mount Semeru caused massive ecological damage, initiating primary succession across landscapes buried by volcanic material. While satellite monitoring provides macro-scale trends, the micro-scale spatiotemporal dynamics and specific topographic drivers of early recovery remain poorly understood. This study quantifies the rate of vegetation recovery and statistically evaluates its micro-topographic constraints. We conducted a time-series analysis using ultra-high-resolution (2.7 cm/pixel) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) RGB imagery acquired in 2022, 2023, and 2025 across a 127.08-hectare Area of Interest within Volcanic Hazard Zone III. Vegetation cover was extracted using the Excess Green (ExG) index with dynamic Otsu thresholding, validated by rigorous accuracy assessments (Overall Accuracy: 89%–95%). A 3-bit spatial coding logic tracked pixel-level successional trajectories, while topographic controls were evaluated using a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test based on spatial random sampling. The results revealed a net vegetation recovery rate of +1.88 hectares/year, forming concentrated succession islands. Crucially, statistical analysis confirmed that micro-topographic slope acts as the primary abiotic control (p < 0.001); pioneer vegetation preferentially colonized steeper slopes (mean 43.20°) that offer structural refuge from active lahar flows, whereas flatter depositional beds (mean 23.64°) remained largely barren. Conversely, elevation (~798 masl) showed no significant correlation (p = 0.68), indicating that secondary fluvial disturbances override broad altitudinal gradients within this active corridor. This study demonstrates a validated, reproducible UAV framework for high-precision ecological monitoring, providing fundamental insights for targeted post-eruption restoration strategies.
