Abstract

Spatial thinking is critical to mathematical thinking and achievement, important not only in mathematics learning and but also important in education research. In order to have similar opportunity in supporting primary students spatial literacy on reasoning, it needs a clearer picture of primary students spatial literacy on reasoning in solving Mathematical Literacy Tasks (MLT) as the aim of this study. The characteristic of MLT satisfies the PISA framework and considering Context, Content (shape and space), Process as well as level of problem. Researcher only focuses on three MLT problems. The result is about description of analyzing three participants solution of MLT based on how they use kinds of spatial literacy on reasoning strategies. Dimensional reasoning is effective but the students didnt use it often, the students seem like unfamiliar with these strategies. The responses suggest that because of the teacher didnt use dimensional strategies in the class, so the student commonly didnt use it often. Therefore, students need experiences that supporting their reasoning of spatial objects and its relationship and teacher can help students by using learning models, methods, or strategies in the class so their mathematical literacy (spatial literacy on reasoning) better than before.

Abstract

A whole attention in didactic situations that might occur/ influence is the strength of didactic engineering as a research design for the development of mathematics learning media. The results of the epistimological obstacle and didactic obstacle analysis of students' creative thinking abilities in geometric material showed a gap between expectations and reality. Based on the results of the a priori analysis, flipbook media is appropriate to be used as one of the media development innovations to improve elementary students' creative thinking skills. Armed with completeness and a clear structure, this media got implementation results that show valid, practical as learning media and and not yet effective because students need time to adapt a new media but it can be seen that there was an increase from the value of presentation student who pass the minimum learning completeness criteria from 0% up to 46%. Based on the results of the a posteriori analysis which is validated by the results of the a priori analysis, it showed that this media can be used to improve students' creative thinking skills in terms of learning outcomes and other didactic phenomena during and after using the media

Abstract

Relational understanding has an important role in understanding mathematical concepts. With relational understanding, students are not only use the existing procedures, but also have logical reasons for the steps taken. With relational understanding, students have a stronger foundation in their understanding. When solving a mathematical problem, sometimes students are unable to remember the formula, then they can still use the concepts that they had before. This research aims to describe junior high school students' relational understanding in relations and functions based on self-esteem. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. Students were given a self-esteem scale test and a Mathematics Ability Test to select research subjects, then 3 students from class VIII-E of SMP Negeri 3 Surabaya were selected as research subjects. Then the subject was given a Mathematical Problem Solving Test, and an interview to check the subject's relational understanding. All data collected is analyzed so that the data obtained is easy to understand. The results show that subjects with high self-esteem fulfill all stages of problem solving. Subjects with medium self-esteem and subjects with low self-esteem only fulfilled two stages of problem solving. Relational understanding has an important role in understanding mathematical concepts. Abstract

Mathematics education needs to be taught meaningfully using problem contexts and facilitating reasoning, modeling, collaboration, and connection with other mathematical concepts. This community service project aimed to train primary school teachers in developing Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) 'icebergs' utilizing the local cultural context of Magetan. Twelve primary school teachers in Magetan participated in the RME training, which focused on developing the RME 'icebergs' through exploratory and contextual approaches. The research method included face-to-face sessions, group discussions, and individual tasks to design relevant learning materials. The training results showed significant improvement in the understanding and application of RME. Before the training, teachers faced challenges in engaging students in grades 4-6 and in using local context in mathematics teaching. Post-training, 67% of the teachers demonstrated a positive change in their teaching approach, shifting from lecture and drill methods to an RME-based approach. Additionally, 50% of the participants successfully developed RME icebergs that integrated problems within the local cultural context of Magetan. The training evaluation indicated that over 50% of participants responded positively, showing increased knowledge about realistic mathematics and the application of culturally contextualized problems. The conclusion of this study asserts that the RME approach, especially when combined with local cultural context, is effective in enhancing mathematics teaching skills and enriching numeracy literacy among primary school teachers. The implications of this research suggest integrating RME into the primary school mathematics curriculum to develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills in students, in line with the demands of the 21st century.
