Abstract

This study examines the representation of Madurese women in contemporary Indonesian novels using a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach. It focuses on how power relations and patriarchal ideologies are constructed and negotiated in Paraban Tuah, Damar Kambang, and Rumah Jeddah. This study aims to identify discursive strategies that naturalise women’s subordination while exploring the forms of agency embedded within the narrative structure. Employing Fairclough’s three-dimensional CDA model, this comparative analysis investigates the textual, discursive, and social dimensions of the novels. The findings reveal that patriarchy is naturalised through morally evaluative lexical choices, metaphors of honour, and deontic modalities that frame women’s obligations within the authority of custom and religion. At the narrative level, symbolic domination and the centralisation of male voices institutionalise power relations as the cultural norm. However, female characters are not portrayed as entirely passive; agency emerges through implicit resistance, domestic negotiation, and ambivalence between compliance and defiance in their lives. Theoretically, this study strengthens the application of critical discourse analysis in Indonesian literary studies and conceptualises agency as a discursive negotiation within ethnicity-based patriarchal structures

Abstract

This study aims to describe spelling errors found in undergraduate thesis abstracts written by students of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Madura, based on the provisions of the Fifth Edition of Indonesian Spelling Guidelines (Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia/EBI). The study employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data consisted of thesis abstracts collected from the Universitas Madura Library. Data were gathered through documentation and text observation and analyzed through identification, classification, tabulation, and interpretation stages. The findings revealed 118 spelling errors, consisting of 47 letter usage errors (39.8%), 41 word-writing errors (34.7%), and 30 punctuation errors (25.5%). Letter-related errors were predominantly associated with inappropriate capitalization, while word-writing errors were dominated by non-standard word forms and incorrect affixation. Punctuation errors mainly involved the misuse of commas. These findings indicate that the implementation of Indonesian spelling conventions in thesis abstracts remains suboptimal. The errors reflect not only insufficient mastery of spelling rules but also limited academic editing practices among students. This study provides empirical evidence regarding the quality of spelling usage in academic writing among engineering students and offers a basis for strengthening academic literacy and scientific writing instruction in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe denotative meanings, reveal connotative meanings, and analyze the process of myth formation in literary works published in the Radar Madura Literature Column using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with primary data sources consisting of five poems published in the Radar Madura Literature Column during the March-September 2025 period, namely Powasa Sakolana Kalbhu, Perempuan Pesisir, Melepas Angin Sakal Mengiringi Perjalanan, Sagara: Dialog Cinta, and Sanja'na. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation and document analysis. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that denotative meanings are dominated by symbols of coastal life such as the sea, boats, waves, nets, sails, and wind. The connotative meanings found describe the struggle for life, hope, self-discovery, steadfastness, and religious values of the Madurese people. Meanwhile, the myth meanings show the construction of the cultural identity of the Madurese people who are known as religious, hardworking, resilient, and have a strong attachment to maritime culture. The research findings indicate that literary works in the Radar Madura Literature Column not only function as a medium for aesthetic expression but also as a means of representing local culture.

Abstract

Previous studies have predominantly focused on novels and short stories, whereas the representation of food in poetry from a gastronomic perspective remains relatively underexplored. This study aims to examine the symbolic meanings of food in Pendidikan Jasmani dan Kesunyian, a poetry collection by Beni Satryo, through Claude Fischler's gastronomic perspective. The study employed a qualitative approach using qualitative textual analysis. Data consisted of words, phrases, lines, and stanzas containing food symbols, which were collected through documentation and close reading and subsequently interpreted using Fischler's Food, Self and Identity framework. The findings reveal that food symbols function not merely as culinary objects but as a symbolic system encompassing four interrelated dimensions: cultural identity, emotional experience, memory, and social relations. Culinary symbols such as pecel lele, kemangi (lemon basil), soto, sweet soy sauce, candy, and peanut sauce undergo aesthetic transformation through metaphorical language, enabling them to represent human experiences within the Indonesian cultural context. This study extends the application of Claude Fischler's gastronomic theory to contemporary Indonesian poetry by demonstrating that food symbols operate as cultural texts that simultaneously construct cultural identity, memory, emotional experience, and social relations. These findings enrich the field of literary gastronomy while offering a new perspective for the interpretation of Indonesian poetry through an interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract

The representation of women in literature is closely related to the construction of gender ideology and power relations in society. In the context of Madurese culture, the values of family honour and social hierarchy play a significant role in shaping gender relations that tend to be patriarchal. This study examines the representation of patriarchal discourse and the negotiation of Madurese women’s agency in contemporary Indonesian novels. This research employs a qualitative approach using Norman Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. The data consist of three contemporary Indonesian novels featuring Madurese female characters: Damar Kambang by Muna Masyari, Paraban Tuah by Elok Teja Suminar, and Silsilah Duka by Dwi Ratih Ramadhany. The findings indicate that patriarchal discourse is constructed through linguistic choices, cultural symbolism, and social narratives that position women as guardians of family honour and objects of social control within family structures, cultural norms, and broader social relations. However, the novels also depict various forms of women’s agency through self-reflection, symbolic resistance to social stigma, and personal decision-making in response to patriarchal pressures. These findings suggest that contemporary Indonesian novels not only reproduce patriarchal discourse but also create discursive spaces for articulating women’s agency within local cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the processes of mythopoesis in the contemporary Indonesian novels Tanah Tabu by Anindita S. Thayf, Burung-Burung Manyar by Y.B. Mangunwijaya, and Para Priyayi by Umar Kayam in reconstructing myths and articulating plural and dynamic cultural identities. The methodology used was a qualitative analysis with a literary discourse approach that emphasised contextual and critical interpretations of the text. The main focus of this research is the patterns of mythopoesis, the narrative function of myths, and the articulation of cultural identity as a result of negotiations between tradition and modernity, local and national, and subaltern and hegemonic. The findings reveal that mythopoesis in the three novels serves as a creative and critical mechanism to affirm and revitalise cultural heritage, while also functioning as a tool for legitimising social-political struggles and criticising modernity and hegemonic state power practices. The cultural identity produced through the process of rewriting myths is not essentialist but plural and constantly evolving in response to dynamic socio-political contexts. These findings reinforce Hall's theory of cultural identity and Homi Bhabha's concept of hybridity, regarding identity as a continuously negotiated construction. The contribution of this research lies in the development of contemporary Indonesian literary studies through an understanding of mythopoesis as a narrative strategy that plays a role in identity formation and social criticism. The practical implications of this research are also relevant for literary education because it prioritises critical and contextual approaches to understanding Indonesia's cultural diversity.
