Abstract

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or both. Poor glycemic control in DM leads to complications such as cardiovascular disease and nephropathy. Vitamin D has been suggested to influence glucose metabolism by improving insulin secretion and sensitivity thorugh mechanisms involving pancreatic β-cells and anti-inflammatory pathways. This study evaluates the effect of vitamin D supplementation on blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. An experimental study was conducted using 25 males Sprague Dawley rats, divided into five groups: Group A (negative control), Group B (non-DM + 415 IU/kgBW vitamin D), Group C (DM without vitamin D), Group D (DM + 415 IU/kgBW vitamin D), and Group E (DM + 1100 IU/kgBW vitamin D). Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (50 mg/kg BW), and rats with random blood glucose levels >200 mg/dL were considered diabetic. Vitamin D supplementation was given via gavage for 30 days. Serum vitamin D and random blood glucose levels were measured 30 days after supplementation. Statistical analyses included ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests. Vitamin D supplementation significantly increased serum vitamin D levels in diabetic rats, especially in Group E (DM + 1100 IU/kgBW vitamin D; (p < 0.05). Random blood glucose levels decreased significantly in diabetic groups and Group E showed the largest glucose reduction (p < 0.001). A moderate negative correlation (r = -0.47, p = 0.017) between vitamin D levels and glucose changes was observed. Vitamin D supplementation reduces blood glucose levels in diabetic rats, with higher doses showing greater efficacy. These findings highlight vitamin D’s potential as an adjunctive therapy for diabetes management. Further research is needed to explore underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Repetitive and intense overhead activities, such as those found in swimming, volleyball, and goalkeeping in football, cause repetitive biomechanical stress on the shoulder joints. This exposure has the potential to cause anatomical remodelling, in the form of significant structural and functional adaptations in the shoulder complex, including the scapula, humerus, and supporting soft tissues. This study analyses narrative literature on research from the past five years regarding anatomical changes caused by overhead activities in swimmers, volleyball players, and footballers. The Scopus, PubMed, and DOAJ databases were used to search for literature focusing on shoulder structural changes and biomechanics. Articles must be in English or Indonesian and open-access. A literature synthesis revealed that the shoulders of overhead athletes undergo anatomical changes, including increased lateral rotation, decreased medial rotation, and increased scapular asymmetry. Anatomical applications also vary across specific sports. Volleyball athletes have larger rotator cuff muscles and a higher risk of subacromial impingement. In contrast, swimmers have a higher risk of humeral epiphysiolysis due to the frequent shoulder movements they experience from a young age. In football goalkeepers, remodelling is more focused on shoulder muscle imbalance and reduced glenohumeral stability due to direct contact and ball-reaching activities. Overhead activities in sports cause unique structural adaptations in the shoulder, depending on the type of sport and specific movement patterns. A deep understanding of this remodelling is crucial for designing targeted injury prevention and rehabilitation programmes for overhead athletes.

Abstract

Carrying a backpack that is excessively heavy can lead to negative effects, including pain in the shoulders, back, and waist. Additionally, it can cause postural changes due to alterations in the shape of the vertebrae. The goal of this Community Service Project (CSP) was to educate students at SMA 2 Padang about the proper use of backpacks, the appropriate weight for backpacks, and the negative effects of carrying overly heavy backpacks on the vertebrae. The method of CSP employed a pre-test and post-test method to measure knowledge retention. Throughout the activity, students received education and vertebral examinations. The key indicators for the CSP were the level of understanding gained regarding backpacks and the effects of excessive weight on vertebral health. The results of CSP indicated a significant increase in knowledge among the students at SMA 2 Padang, with all participants achieving perfect scores of 100 on the post-test. The vertebral examinations did not show any abnormalities, such as kyphosis or scoliosis. The conclusion of CSP successfully enhanced students' understanding of backpack weight and the potential negative impacts of carrying excessive weight on the vertebrae.
