Abstract

This study explores vocational high school students’ perceptions of using Baamboozle for vocabulary learning. While gamification is effective, research on students' perspectives remains limited. Using a qualitative case study, 20 students completed a questionnaire, and five participated in interviews. Thematic analysis identified key trends. Findings show Baamboozle enhances engagement, motivation, comprehension, and retention, making learning enjoyable. However, some students noted unequal participation in group activities. These results align with Constructivist Learning Theory, emphasizing interactive learning. This study contributes to game-based learning research by providing insights into Baamboozle’s impact. Future studies should explore long-term effects and compare it with other digital tools. Educators should integrate Baamboozle with structured strategies for optimal results.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the impact of the BBC Learning English application on listening skills among 10th-grade students in a computerized academic setting. The study involved 46 students from MAS TPI Sawit Seberang, divided into two groups of 23 students each. The experimental group utilized the BBC Learning English application, while the control group received traditional instruction. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pre-tests and post-tests, the experimental group also completed a questionnaire. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (α = 0.05) in post-test listening scores, favoring the experimental group. Additionally, "strongly agree" and "agree" were the most common responses regarding the application’s usability, indicating a positive effect on students' attitudes. The findings suggest practical applications for integrating technology into English language instruction, highlighting the potential of digital tools like the BBC Learning English application to enhance listening skills. This study contributes to the theoretical framework of English Language Teaching by demonstrating the effectiveness of technology-mediated learning and its impact on student engagement and skill development. Therefore, incorporating the BBC Learning English application into listening skills instruction is recommended.

Abstract

Interlanguage is a transitional stage in language learning, where a person’s language ability moves from their first language (mother tongue) toward the other language. It is important to note that interlanguage is distinct from the mother tongue and the second/foreign language. This study examines the translation errors made by students when translating from Bahasa Indonesia to English during their interlanguage stage. The study aims to investigate (1) how students translate at this stage, (2) the types of errors they make, and (3) the most frequent errors. Using descriptive qualitative and content analysis methods, ten seventh-grade junior high school students participated in this study whose mother tongue is Bahasa Indonesia, and English is a foreign language/target language. For the instrument, this study uses an individual sentence translation test. The students were instructed to translate four unrelated sentences each, with a time limit of one minute per sentence. The researcher uses sources of error theory from Richard and Lott. The findings indicate that (1) most students tend to transfer the rules of their mother tongue into English. (2) Out of 40 sentences, it found 18 contained errors, leading to 26 mistakes: 8 interference errors (7.7% transfer of structure, 23% interlingual), and 18 intralingual errors (11.5% incomplete application of rules, 30.8% false concept hypothesized, and 27% overgeneralization). Meanwhile, (3) the most frequent error is false concept hypothesized, followed by overgeneralization, interlingual errors, incomplete application of rules, and transfer of structure errors.
