Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the ketogenic diet that slows down weight gain in juvenile Musmusculus induced with benzopyrene (BZP). Method: Thirty-six female mice (Mus musculus), 6-8 weeks old, weighted 15-25 grams were divided into six groups randomly. K1 (negative control, standard diet) inducedwith oleum olivarum, while K2 (positive control, standard diet), P1 (ketogenic diet 1), P2 (ketogenic diet 2),P3 (ketogenic diet 3) and P4 (ketogenic diet 4) induced with BZP subcutaneously in the right breast at a doseof 0.3mg/20gBB/day for 14 days. The ketogenic diet was given for the next 28 days. Data were analyzedusing the ANOVA and post hoc LSD test. Results: After 42 days, the ketogenic diet mice experiencedslower weight gain (p=0.000) because BZP induced neurotoxicity and the administration of the ketogenicdiet in juvenile mice induced neurohormonal changes. The ketogenic diet increased ketone plasma level(p=0.000) and reduced blood glucose levels (p=0.002) due to nutritional ketosis state. Conclusions: Theketogenic diet with fat:protein ratio 60:30 slows down weight gain, increased ketone levels and decreasedblood glucose levels in juvenile mice with BZP as cancer inducer.

Abstract

It is known that coffee has much phenolic components such as flavonoids and chlorogenic acids (CGAs) content for neutralizing oxidative stress. Gayo-arabica coffee is a typical arabica coffee which widely used by Gayo people in Aceh, Indonesia. The coffee plants also grow in Gayo. However, it has not clearly understood its effect for health. The study aimed is to analyze the Gayo-arabica coffee consumption on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as an indicator of damage cells due to oxidative stress and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a marker of antioxidant enzyme, after performing a single bout submaximal physical exercise. Male sedentary subjects (21-27 y.o), consisted of 36 men, divided into 3 groups: control (zero of coffee), Gayo1 (15 g coffee in 200 ml water), and Gayo2 (20 g coffee in 200 ml water). Coffee was given once, after rockport test as a single bout submaximal physical exercise. MDA serum and SOD serum were taken after 1 hour of coffee drinking. MDA serum decreased significantly in Gayo1 (8.01 uM) and Gayo2 (10.36 uM), compared to control (26.82 uM). SOD serum increased significantly in Gayo1 (114.81 ng/ ml) and Gayo2 (101.48 ng/ml), compared to control (24.024 ng/ml). Nevertheless, there was no significantly different between Gayo1 and Gayo2 on MDA and SOD serum (p≥0.05). We suggest that the Gayo-arabica coffee after single bout submaximal exercise can diminish stress oxidative in sedentary people.

Abstract

Introduction: Haemodialysis is one of the kidney replacements therapies, but, as it cannot wholly replace kidney function, it still causes complications such as increased blood pressure and pulse which can lead to anxiety for the patient. The purpose of this study was to explain the effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) on anxiety, blood pressure and pulse in haemodialysis patients. Methods: The study design was a true pre-post-test control group design experiment. The total sample was 105 haemodialysis patients taken by purposive sampling technique and divided into two intervention groups and one control group. The independent variable was PMR, and the dependent variables were anxiety, blood pressure and pulse. Data were obtained using a questionnaire and analysed using the Kruskal Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney U test with a significance level <0.05.Results: The results of the PMR two times per week group analysis for one month showed a significant influence on anxiety (p=0.000), blood pressure (p=0.000), and pulse rate (p=0.000). Mann-Whitney U Test Results showed a significant effect on anxiety (p=0.004), blood pressure (p=0.000), and pulse (p=0.000).Conclusion: Haemodialysis patients who performed PMR interventions showed a promising outcome on a decrease in anxiety, blood pressure and pulse. The regular application of PMR interventions can control vital signs in patients undergoing haemodialysis

Abstract

Anxiety among hemodialysis patients is often overlooked, although the psychological burden experienced can affect health and care. Progressive muscle relaxation is an effective intervention to reduce the anxiety level. This study aimed to examine the effect of continuous muscle relaxation intervention on decreasing anxiety among hemodialysis patients. A quasi-experimental, pre-test, and post-test with a non-equivalent control group was applied in this study. Seventy samples were recruited using Purposive Sampling and divided into two intervention groups and control groups. Data analysis was performed and presented in descriptive statistics, and significant findings were calculated using the paired t-test. The results of the study showed that the intervention group's anxiety level decreased from 28.76 + 4.603 to 16.61 + 2.487 after the intervention. Meanwhile, in the control group, the average anxiety level decreased slightly from 28.18 + 4.066 to 23.82 + 4.362. The paired t-test obtained a p-value of 0,000, indicating that there was a significant difference in the decrease in anxiety levels between the intervention and the control group. An intervention in progressive muscle relaxation can reduce anxiety levels in hemodialysis patients. The nurse need to consider this intervention as an alternative to reduce problem related psychological problems. Keywords: Hemodialysis, anxiety, progressive muscle relaxation

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) can affect the peripheral and central nervous system. It can affect cognitive function, one of which can be seen from the decrease in the concentration ability. The concentration ability can be assessed by measuring the reaction time. Reaction time is the time interval between the onset of a stimulus and the initiations of a response. One of the important treatments for DM is physical exercises. Persadia gymnastic is one example of physical exercise that is specially designed for people with DM.Aim: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of acute Persadia gymnastic on the concentration ability of people with DM.Material and methods: This was an experimental study in type 2 DM patients. Fourteen subjects who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed and randomly grouped into the control (without performing Persadia gymnastic) and the intervention group (performing Persadia gymnastic). The subject’s reaction times were measured before and after the intervention. The mean results of the reaction time of all subjects were then compared between the control and the intervention groups using the Independent-T test and Mann-Whitney tests.Result: The analyzed data were only 7 subjects per group with a total of 14 subjects. The mean value of reaction time in the intervention group was decreased, both audio (-0.04 ± 0.85) and visual (-0.09 ± 0.56). However, there was no significant difference of the reaction time between control and intervention groups (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Many factors can affect reaction time and some still cannot be controlled in this study due to a lot of limitations. Further research is still needed to figure out the effect of persadia gymnastics on the ability to concentrate in people with Diabetes Mellitus.
