Abstract

Based on the Regional Spatial Planning of Medan City for the years 2011-2031, several Cultural Heritage Areas have been established that include various historical buildings, one of which is located in the Old City area of Kesawan. The presence of historical buildings such as the Lonsum Building, Tjong A Fie, and Pos Bloc coexists with the rapid business and culinary activities on Ahmad Yani Street and Balai Kota Street. There are indications that a shift in visitation orientation has occurred where the meaning of tourism is stronger compared to a comprehensive exploration of history. The aim of this research is to analyze the meaning of place at three historical buildings and its implications for regional development. This research is qualitative with a geographical approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with 36 informants selected through purposive sampling. The research results show that the meaning of place in the three historical buildings is more dominated functionally, socially, and emotionally than by regional romanticism. The shift in the meaning of historical buildings is a consequence of the massive development of alternative tourism in urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the cultural heritage area involving elements of the community, government, and private sector, with the hope that the authentic value of historical buildings is not entirely eroded by the modernity of urban development.

Abstract

Encapsulated cardamom waste extract (ECWE) contains flavonoids with antibacterial and antioxidant properties that may enhance broiler health and performance. This study evaluated the effects of ECWE as a phytobiotic on broiler intestinal microbiota, pH, H/L ratio, lymphoid organs, and performance. A total of 200 unsexed Ross broilers (8 days old) with an average body weight of 215.08±5.1 g/bird were assigned to five dietary treatments: T0 (control), T1 (0.02% ECWE), T2 (0.04% ECWE), T3 (0.06% ECWE), and T4 (0.08% ECWE). Results showed that 0.08% ECWE significantly increased lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations, lymphoid organ, and broiler performance. The increase in LAB given 0.08% ECWE is more effective in helping to reduce intestinal pH and to minimize the growth of pathogenic bacteria that can interfere with chicken digestion. In addition, the antioxidant properties in ECWE had a positive effect on the development of lymphoid organs, especially the thymus. It is concluded that ECWE supplementation at 0.08% was the most effective in improving digestive tract health and optimizing broiler performance.

Abstract

Synthetic antibiotics have been used to stimulate livestock growth. Because of the negative impact of using these material, it is necessary to find its substitute. One of the producer of natural antibiotics is microorganisms such as fungus. Endophytic fungi are one kinds of fungi that live in plant tissues and able to form colonies without endangering the host and can produce secondary metabolites such as antibiotic. This study is preliminary research that the ending of the purpuse is to find the endophytic fungi which producing antibiotic. This first aims of the study is to psolation and identification of the endophytic fungi found on leaves and petioles of Salam (Syzygium polyanthum Wight). The materials used are leaves and petioles of Salam which are obtained from traditional markets. The method was the isolation by direct planting used spread methods, then continue to identification. The results was the isolation of endophytic fungi from the Salam plant parts obtained as follows from leaves got five isolates and from petiole are seven isolates. Identification of all isolates found as follows from leaves are Mycelia sterilia, Acremonium sp and Fusarium sp and from petioles were Mycelia sterilia , Fusarium sp, Aspergillus sp and unidentified fungi. Keywords: endophytic fungi, antibiotics, petiols, leaves, Syzygium polyanthum

Abstract

This study aims to prove an increase in the expression of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) after moderate-intensity continuous exercise in obese females. The present study employed a true-experimental with the randomized control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 12 obese females were enrolled in this study and given moderate-intensity continuous exercise. Continuous exercise was done with an intensity of 60-70% HRmax for 40 minutes using a treadmill. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method was used to examine the expression of UCP-1. Data were analyzed using independent samples t-test with statistics packet for social science (SPSS) software version 17. The results obtained mean UCP-1 expression on K1 between pre-exercise (3.68±0.46) ng/mL, post-exercise (3.73±0.69) ng/mL and (p=0.875). Mean UCP-1 expression on K2 between pre-exercise (3.64±1.52) ng/mL, post-exercise (6.83±0.64) ng/mL and (p=0.001). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is an increase in UCP-1 expression between before and after moderate-intensity continuous exercise in obese females. Future studies are suggested to compare the effect of acute exercise with moderate intensity chronic exercise on increasing UCP-1 expression in obese females.
