Abstract

This study analyzes Ernest Hemingway’s short story Cat in the Rain through the lens of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory, with a particular focus on the concept of the icon. Peirce’s semiotics is based on three key elements: the sign, the object, and the interpretant, which together construct meaning. Among these, the icon is a sign that resembles or directly represents its referent. This research aims to identify and interpret the various iconic signs present in Hemingway’s narrative, shedding light on their role in shaping the story’s deeper meanings. Through a close reading of Cat in the Rain, several iconic markers emerge, contributing to the story’s symbolism and thematic depth. The cat itself, as an icon, represents unfulfilled desires, loneliness, and emotional longing, mirroring the protagonist’s inner struggles. Other significant icons, such as the rain and the hotel setting, reinforce the atmosphere of isolation and confinement. By analyzing these elements through Peirce’s semiotic framework, this study explores how Hemingway employs iconic signs to communicate complex emotional and psychological states with minimalistic yet powerful language. The findings reveal that the use of icons in Cat in the Rain plays a crucial role in conveying the protagonist’s sense of longing and dissatisfaction. This study contributes to literary semiotics by demonstrating how Peirce’s theory enhances the understanding of Hemingway’s symbolic storytelling techniques. Ultimately, the analysis underscores the effectiveness of iconic representation in literature, offering new insights into the interplay between signs and meaning in Hemingway’s work.

Abstract

The application of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method serves as a strategic approach to ensure alignment between consumer needs and the technical characteristics of the “Matcha Boy” beverage product, playing a crucial role in translating the voice of the customer (VoC) into measurable decision-making within the product development process. By combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, data were collected through direct observation, open and closed questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with business practitioners. The analysis results indicate that the most influential attributes on purchasing decisions are the authentic and consistent matcha flavor, affordable pricing, and fast and friendly service, while menu variety and attractive packaging design serve as supporting factors to strengthen brand image and enhance consumer experience. The development of the House of Quality (HoQ) matrix revealed that aspects such as ingredient formulation, matcha powder quality, sugar measurement control, and the selection of milk types have strong correlations with customer satisfaction levels, emphasizing that improving the quality of raw materials and ensuring flavor consistency should be the top priorities in the product development strategy. Overall, the application of the QFD method at “Matcha Boy” has proven effective in providing a systematic, efficient, and market-oriented development direction and serves as a model that can be adopted by MSME actors to enhance the competitiveness of contemporary beverage products in line with modern consumption trends.

Abstract

The village of Carabaka on Bawean Island is faced with two challenges: revitalizing its social and religious spirit, and optimizing its untapped local economic potential. Often, the separation between spiritual activities and economic growth hinders holistic community development. Therefore, this community service program aims to implement a collaborative community empowerment model that synergizes the revitalization of religious spirituality with strengthening the local economy. The program uses Participatory Action Research (PAR), in which the community is involved in every stage of the process, from planning and action to observation and reflection. This strategy is realized through programs such as fundraising for mosque renovations, supporting home-based chip businesses, and strengthening religious educational institutions. The results of the community service program demonstrate that this collaborative model successfully creates strong synergy. Community participation in religious activities has increased, building social capital in the form of trust and mutual cooperation. This social capital then serves as the foundation for economic mentoring programs, as evidenced by the growth of local chip businesses. Thus, the PAR approach has proven effective in uniting the two key pillars of sustainable village development.

Abstract

This research investigates the dominant noun phrase patterns used by EFL students and identifies the challenges they face in constructing complex noun phrases. A descriptive quantitative design was applied, involving third-semester EFL students majoring in English Education at Tadulako University. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires, validated using the SPSS program to ensure reliability. Results reveal that the most frequently used noun phrase pattern is determiner + noun, accounting for 35% of the total noun phrases produced by students. In contrast, the least utilized pattern is premodifier + noun + postmodifier, representing only 1%. The analysis indicates that sociocultural factors, particularly students' linguistic environments, significantly influence their ability to construct complex noun phrases. Addressing these challenges may involve implementing inclusive curricula and culturally responsive teaching strategies. The findings have implications for curriculum design, emphasizing the need to enhance instructional materials and provide targeted practice to improve students' mastery of complex noun phrase structures.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji pola frasa nomina yang dominan digunakan oleh mahasiswa EFL dan mengidentifikasi tantangan yang mereka hadapi dalam membentuk frasa nomina kompleks.
