Abstract

Foreign language anxiety has been proven to be an important issue in language learning, according to research on language learning in foreign languages. This study aims to determine the level of anxiety experienced by English preservice teachers. Most research projects in the past concerned learners’ anxiety about students who learning English. To fill the gap, the current study tries to deliver a different perspective on classroom anxiety. Thus, the current study investigates anxiety from preservice teachers’ points of view quantitatively. The current study examines the level of anxiety by adopting the Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety Scale (FLTAS) by Yoon (2012). Next, the scale in the form of a questionnaire has been responded to by 27 English preservice teachers. Further, the results show that the preservice teachers have a moderate level of anxiety. Overall, the study outlines the principal factors causing and affecting preservice anxiety about teaching English as a foreign language in the classroom

Abstract

Critical pedagogy can be reflected in the situation when the learners become social transformers of their community and world, and when they critically construct knowledge. The prior researchers s only evaluated discrepancies in gender and age. Freire and Brown's framework also verified the feasibility and reliability of implementing CDP.  However, general skills and unspecific digital tools drove the reader's bias and ambiguity. Consequently, the purposes of the study aim to connect previous topics in different contexts, addressing the gap and providing a critical analysis. Especially, English lectures in certain skills and specific digital tools would be needed to know critical pedagogy's intentional implementation or unintentional presence in the ELT realm. Three concerns were highlighted to guide the researchers to do the research; the essential aspect of pedagogy that has and has not been involved yet in online learning and the factors of age and gender that might influence the learning. Th researchers s used qualitative method, especially observation and questionnaire instruments to get the data of the incorporation of the Discord tool of critical pedagogy in the higher education domain. The findings reveals that the implementation a critical pedagogy of Discord tool and the discrepancies of age and gender that influence the online meeting.

Abstract

Understanding refusal strategies utilized by young learners in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) is essential for teachers to foster more effective interaction in the classroom. The present study explores how a young EFL learner applies refusal strategies when interacting during extensive reading (ER) activities. Data were collected through real-time observations, the learner’s diaries, and a parent interview, and further analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed how the young EFL learner applied more direct refusals, influenced by the learner’s developmental traits. Indirect refusals, which appeared mostly as avoidance, emerged frequently only during the initial ER sessions. Refusals, regardless, did not appear as frequent towards the end of ER sessions as the learner became comfortable and confident with the teacher’s scaffolding. Considering the findings, the current study suggests future studies to investigate how refusal strategies are applied by young EFL learners in a larger group, which may be influenced by different developmental traits, learning situations, and language proficiencies, to further generalize the findings.
