An Exploration of Students’ Foreign Language Anxiety in English Classroom. Objectives: This study aims to investigate students’ foreign language anxiety in English class: students’ anxiety levels, students’ anxiety kinds, and students’ attitudes toward English class. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach and a survey method with a descriptive research design. Findings: The findings of the study showed 62.5% of the students felt anxious in foreign language level sequenced from mildly anxious, anxious, and very anxious. Students’ dominant kind of foreign language anxiety was fear of negative evaluation. Finally, more than half of the students had negative attitudes toward English class. Meanwhile, the rest of the students showed positive attitude. Conclusion: In conclusion, most of the students feel anxious in English class. They mostly experience anxiety due to the negative evaluation, and their attitudes toward English class could not completely determine their foreign language anxiety level. The present research aims to investigate the key features of turn taking in Mata Najwa talk show about Ragu-ragu Perpu (doubtful of rules of law). In addition, the authors propose to describe the use of turn-taking features between speaker to listener in Mata Najwa talk show. Moreover, The authors utilize a qualitative research methodology by applying a descriptive analysis in the research. To collect the data, the authors select the specific types of turn-taking occured between. In analyzing the data, the authors implemented Jacob L. Mey analysis theory in which selected the types of turn-taking into several forms. For instance, taking the floor (starting up, taking over, interruption, and overlaps), holding the floor, and yielding the floor. The results indicated that the conversation between seven speakers during the talk show are dominated by interruptions and overlapping. It indicates that 24 utterences express the existance of interruptions, while 16 lucutors show the overlapping. Moreover, the speakers tend to use several strategies to hold the talk, including verbal fillers, silent pauses, and lexical repetitions. Within the context of Mata Najwa talk show program, the host of the Mata Najwa tends to apply greetings and questions in yielding the talk to the interlocutors. In conclusion, interruption and overlapping are the two features of turn-taking mostly occured during the conversation.

Scholars and practitioners should be aware that writing a good and eye-catching abstract is significant but tough work. Scholars and researchers are challenged to produce an informative and persuasive abstract to be accepted then published in either national or international publication and they should know the current characteristics of abstracts written by the students or apprentice writers. The study aims at examining the comparison of discourse structure and linguistic features between English abstracts of research articles by Indonesian researchers and English abstracts of the thesis by Indonesian scholars. The corpus data were taken from 10 research articles abstracts of Indonesian researchers concerning English education published in ERIC and 10 thesis abstracts of the graduate program of English Education in UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Thus, a genre-based analysis proposed by Bhatiaâ€™s move structure and Swalesâ€™ and Feakâ€™s move structure will be used to investigate the discourse structure and Paltridge starfields will be used to investigate linguistic features. The results indicated that 60% of abstracts published in the international journal were organized well while 40% of thesis abstracts were not organized well. Furthermore, past tenses were frequently used in both article abstracts and thesis abstracts in terms of aim, method, and result move. While present tense was still used in aim and result move in article abstracts. In conclusion, most abstracts published in international publications used well organizational move. While most abstracts published in local ones are not used well organizational move.Keywords: Discourse structure; linguistic features; research article abstracts; rhetorical move; thesis abstracts.

The aims of this research are to know the types of speech acts performed by English teachers when talking in the classroom and the teacher's reason for using the most specific kind of speech act. This research used a qualitative research design because the classroom activity became the data source. The participant of this research was 1 English teacher in English Club at SDIT Cordova. The data was collected through observation and interviews. The data was analyzed through four steps: classifications, data reduction, data display, and verification/conclusion drawing. According to the findings, the data showed 71% of the talk used directive. Teachers utilize directive types because they are interested in their students' competencies, whether or not their teachings have been comprehended, and whether or not students can recognize examples of the material they have been given. Meanwhile, the opposite result displayed in the data is declarative. Moreover, the finding also showed that the Teacher produced other speech acts such as assertive, commissive, and expressive. The teacher uses speech acts to ensure that the teaching and learning process runs smoothly and the material is well received by the students.

Youtube has been rigorously studied in the realm of ESL and EFL. Nonetheless, these studies focused on the usage of Youtube as a teaching aid. The present study employs a qualitative research design to analyze the teaching methods and power establishment in VOA Learning English's "Everyday Grammar TV" series. This study examines how Youtube can be used as a learning source by itself. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as outlined by Fairclough, the research examines the language text, discourse practices, and discursive events within the series. The findings indicate that the teaching method used is Content-Based Instruction (CBI), which integrates language learning with educational content. Additionally, power is established through the use of individualization, specifically by addressing one of the hosts with academic titles, thereby emphasizing their authority and expertise. This study provides insights into the dynamics of educational media and the role of language in establishing power. Further studies could focus to investigate how viewers perceive and internalize these power structures. Understanding how learners interpret and respond to the use of individualization and other power strategies would provide deeper insights into the effectiveness of these techniques in fostering respect and engagement.

Given Indonesian students’ limited exposure to English outside the classroom, textbooks play a crucial role in shaping reading development. Therefore, this study examines the cohesion and coherence of the reading texts in the Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut: Let’s Elevate Our English (Edisi Revisi 2024) textbook for the XI graders. Using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) framework, the analysis identifies grammatical cohesive devices, reference, and conjunctions across 12 narrative, analytical exposition, and hortatory exposition texts. Coherence was analyzed through van Dijk and Kintsch’s (1983) situation model, focusing on propositional structures, local and global coherence, and genre-based superstructures. Findings reveal clear genre-dependent patterns: narrative texts rely heavily on referential cohesion to track characters and events. Meanwhile, analytical and hortatory expositions rely predominantly on explicit conjunctions to construct logical and persuasive argumentation, highlighting the pedagogical importance of genre-based cohesion for classroom instruction. Most of the texts demonstrate strong global coherence through stable macrostructures and adherence to expected genre schemata. However, the predominance of surface-level cohesive markers, particularly in expository texts, suggests limited opportunities for developing learners’ inferential and higher-order comprehension skills. Overall, the textbook provides coherent and accessible discourse models for senior high school learners. Yet, it would benefit from more varied cohesion strategies and deeper conceptual linking to support advanced academic literacy.

Globalization and the advancement of technology are giving a new challenge as well as opportunities for English educators around the globe. Indirectly, there are obstacles associated with learning English due to the fact that technology has become an integral aspect of human existence. The teaching of reading skill also faces the same challenge. Nowadays, reading is seen as more important than other skills, considering that reading has become one of the aspects of literacy. With regard to assessment, the availability of an educational application might be advantageous for teachers to assess students' reading skills. The current study investigates the types of application used by teachers in assessing students’ reading skill and the type of reading assessment that occur during the implementation of the application. Through open-ended interview and document analysis method, the research result indicates that the implementation of Google Form as an educational application to assess students reading skills demonstrated a reading assessment based on traditional assessment approaches with a focus on intensive reading. This study has shown the appropriate media for assessing students reading skill along with the reading focuses and assessment design that is suitable for it. In addition, in this study, Google Form dominates the most considerable use of media to assess students reading skills. Therefore, teachers could also save more time in assessing students’ reading by utilizing educational applications.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into education has gained significant attention over the past few years, driven by the potential of AI to revolutionize teaching and learning processes. Despite the growing body of research on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, there remains a significant gap in understanding its trends and specific details within English Language Teaching (ELT). This study presents an analysis and snapshot of contemporary research trends in AI applications in ELT using bibliometric analysis. By leveraging publication from the 2019-2024 Scopus database, key patterns and themes within the existing literature are identified. The study systematically collected and analyzed 1,994 documents, including articles, conference papers, and reviews from 522 sources and 3,316 authors. The analyses identify the most productive authors, sources, affiliations, and countries. Additional bibliographic coupling analysis reveals seven main clusters. These clusters range from AI applications in contextual language learning to big data analysis in ELT. Co-occurrence network analysis further underscores the interconnectedness of various research topics, such as machine learning, natural language processing, and autonomous learning systems. The findings have several important implications. The growing body of research indicates that AI technologies are increasingly being integrated into educational practices, offering more personalized, efficient, and engaging learning experiences. This study provides a detailed overview of the current landscape of AI research in ELT. By understanding these dynamics, educators, researchers, and policymakers can better leverage AI technologies to enhance educational outcomes and address the evolving needs of learners in a rapidly changing digital world.

This research aims to examine the visual components of a Pearson primary school English textbook. By applying visual semiotic theory to the visual aspects (Barthes, 1977), this research demonstrates that the EFL textbook has three kinds of multicultural values: respect for other people's traditions, appreciation for women's equal rights, and appreciation for other people's viewpoints. Three photos exemplified respect for other people's traditions, one exemplified gratitude for women's equal rights, and two exemplified appreciation for another person's viewpoint. Additionally, two visual components identified in this research are classified as source culture (SC), four visual elements are classified as universality culture (UC), and there are no visual elements that reflect target culture (TC). The current study discovered that the EFL Pearson textbook for Indonesian primary school continues to have an asymmetric depiction of multicultural values.

Reading text, besides being used as teaching media, is also used in an assessment measurement. However, in reality, many students have difficulty understanding the reading text due to several factors such as the text is too long, incohesive between words, and even incoherent between paragraphs. To avoid these factors, important to analyze the use of cohesive devices in reading texts. The present study aimed to investigate grammatical cohesive devices in the reading text of the English National Final Examination test for Junior High School in the 2017-2018 academic year in Indonesia. The current research attempted to: (1) find out the kind of grammatical cohesion devices that were applied in sixteen reading texts of the English National Final Examination test, (2) explore the use of reference, substitution, ellipses, and conjunction to describe the cohesiveness that was applied in sixteen of the reading texts, consisting of a short functional, narrative, descriptive, recount and report text. The reading texts were analyzed using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory related to grammatical cohesion devices. The steps of data analysis were through the process of collecting, counting, categorizing, and assessing the grammatical cohesion devices. The findings revealed that 621 grammatical cohesion devices were used in the English National Final Examination reading text. Further, the findings explained that 67.47% of grammatical cohesion device was the reference (419), 5.15% was the substitution (32), 2.58% was the ellipses (16), 24.80% was the conjunction (154). The findings also indicated that the limited use of grammatical cohesion devices in the present study showed a lack of a variety of grammatical cohesion in terms of form and variation devices. Although the reading text of the English Final Examination was somewhat cohesive, some areas still need improvement. Implications for teachers and educators are to give more attention to the coherence of the reading text. A cohesive reading text will provide an understanding of both the form and content of the text. For reading text scriptwriters, they must pay attention to grammatical cohesion devices so it becomes more varied and not monotonous. Besides, students need to be given material related to cohesion because knowledge of cohesion is very useful in the mastery of their language, especially in reading and writing skills.
