Abstract

This study investigates how the “English for Nusantara” Grade IX textbook shapes students’ critical thinking skills by using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). As part of Indonesia’s goals in education, English for Nusantara published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology aims to integrate local cultural values with English language learning, promoting both linguistic skills and critical thinking skills. The research focused on analyzing the discourse in the textbook, including the languages and activities, to evaluate their potential in shaping students’ critical thinking skills. This study using Ilyas’ frameworks as the main analysis to see the indicators for the critical thinking. The study examined whether the textbook contains languages or activities that promotes the indicators; there are (1) clarification; (2) assumption; (3) reasons and evidence; (4) viewpoints or perspectives; (5) implications, consequences, and alternatives; (6) questions; (7) predictions; (8) agreement and disagreement; (10) summary and conclusion. The results showed that eight out of the ten indicators of critical thinking by Ilyas were applied in this textbook. It is also found that this textbook promotes critical thinking linked with the indicators by Facione, called self-regulation.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the text, the discourse practice, and the sociocultural practice of Bintang Emon’s discourse humor video entitled “Accidentally (Ga Sengaja),” posted on his Instagram platform. To analyze the data, the qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. The data were obtained from the video transcript of Bintang Emon accessed from Instagram. The data were then analyzed by using Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis model. Moreover, the techniques used were observing, interpreting the data by analyzing the text, which was seen from three elements such as Representation, Relation, and Identity; analyzing the discourse practice which focused on production, consumption, reproduction of the text; and analyzing the socio-cultural practice of the discourse humor, and the last is concluding. The result of this study showed that Bintang Emon used more rhetorical figures in his discourse in the analysis of text level. He delivered his criticism with good word choices and conveyed some analogies to make the audiences agree with what he said. The intention of his complaint regarding Novel Baswedan’s acid attack case was expressed implicitly so that the audiences cannot predict his intention if they only look at it from his caption. In the level of discourse practice, he successfully represented most of the citizens’ criticism against the case. Furthermore, he took his right to freedom of speech to deliver his thought in a humorous style.

Abstract

Language plays a significant part in shaping and influencing people’s perspectives on societies and on political sectors, especially in an inaugural speech. Inaugural speech is one of the powerful tools to notify the people of the purposes as a leader. Hence, the researchers aimed to analyze the inaugural speeches of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in 2004 and Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in 2019 regarding their rhetoric and schematic words in their speeches during their tenure served as the Indonesian President. To uncover their inaugural speeches, the researchers used the theoretical frameworks proposed by Hymes (1974, cited in Eaton, 2019), where he developed the analysis of the connection between a language and a broader feature, such as macro- and micro-linguistics analysis. However, the key purpose of concern still marks a language presenting equality between linguistic and social perspectives. The study revealed that SBY and Jokowi mostly used polite words, a low, moderate voice, and tended to appreciate their rivals when giving their inaugural speeches respectively in 2004 and 2019. The difference in macro and micro-linguistics features assert that these two national figures have different traits even though they are from the same ethnic group, the Javanese. Further, this study suggested some pedagogical implications for English teachers to implement the potential benefits of macro- and micro-linguistics analysis of inaugural speeches for the language classroom. It can bridge a gap between language teaching and practical English use in society.

Abstract

While previous studies have extensively examined the effectiveness of using context clues in reading comprehension through experimental designs, limited attention has been given to the use of context clues in the reading section as an element of the examination, particularly in the context of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) English Acquisition Examination in 2023. This research examines the critical role of context clues in enhancing reading comprehension, specifically within the reading section of the English Acquisition component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Through a detailed analysis of context clues across three provided texts, the findings reveal a significant disparity in their distribution. The first text employs a wide range of context clues, such as definitions, punctuation, restatements, antonyms, cause and effect relationships, hints from surrounding sentences, and word formation. In contrast, the second and third texts depend on a narrower selection of context clues, which could hinder readers' capacity to understand intricate passages and fully appreciate subtle meanings. The research suggests that future studies should explore how different distributions of context clues impact specific learner outcomes and comprehension strategies, ultimately contributing to best practices in text design for educational assessments.

Abstract

Motivation has been long believed to be an essential contributor to students’ success in learning English. Many studies (e.g., Gbollie & Keamu, 2017; Wang, 2008; Zhang & Xiao, 2006) have been dedicated to investigating the relationship between motivation and success in learning English. While these studies have contributed to shedding light on the importance of motivation on students’ achievement in learning English, insufficient research has been conducted to address the concept of motivation itself, how the concept has evolved since the first time it was developed, and to what extent motivation affects both teachers and students’ performances at school. Owing to this fact, the present article seeks to discuss the notion and conceptualization of motivation by following several steps. First, the present paper took on arguments from prominent figures on the field of motivation to explore the essence of motivation and why it is essential for English as second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) learning. The conversation then built on the current theoretical framework of types and factors influencing student and teacher motivation. Following that, a plethora of discussions on the possible ways to increase student and teacher enthusiasm and motivation inside EFL classrooms were elaborated
