Abstract

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a sleep disorder characterized by the inability to move when awakened from sleep and the appearance of hallucinations, such as seeing shadows or hearing voices. Sleep paralysis occurs due to stress, physical fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep quality. This condition has an impact on reduced concentration, motivation, health conditions, and decreased completion of tasks. The aim of the research is to determine students' knowledge about sleep paralysis. The research method was descriptive, with a population of D III nursing students with a sample size of 83 students. The results are that almost half of the respondents have insufficient knowledge. Conclusion: Sleep paralysis is not the result of the presence of supernatural beings, but rather a condition of paralysis, especially sensory movement muscles, which occurs during sleep and is a normal thing, so recommendations need to be provided with education about efforts to prevent sleep paralysis

Abstract

Metode: posttest only control group design.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Indonesia raises concerns about long-term complications such as diabetic foot ulcers, which can lead to amputation, disability, and reduced productivity and quality of life. Despite the availability of health education and promotive-preventive services, 79.1% of Diabetes Mellitus patients have poor foot care practices. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze Diabetes Mellitus patients' perceptions of the risk of diabetic foot ulcers. The method used was descriptive phenomenological, through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The sampling technique used purposive sampling until data saturation was achieved. The sample size was 15 DM patients, and the research locations were Riung Bandung Community Health Center and Bandung City Hospital. Data were analyzed using the Colaizzi method. The results showed a negative emotional response at the initial diagnosis that developed into acceptance through family and spiritual support. The perception of diabetic foot ulcers was the most frightening, affecting independence. Preventive behavior was influenced by knowledge, experience, fear of amputation, and access to education. In conclusion, patients perceive diabetic foot ulcers as dangerous, difficult to heal, at risk of infection, and even leading to amputation. Patients' recommendations call for concrete, empathetic, interactive, and ongoing education from healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Mosquito coils are made from incense products and are designed to repel insects using pyrethrins and pyrethroids as their main active ingredients. However, the use of these coils poses significant public health and ecological risks due to the emitted toxic fumes. These fumes can have long-term damaging effects on humans and the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various durations of subacute exposure to mosquito coil smoke (MCS) on lung histology and blood hematology in white male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Rats were divided into four groups (n = 6): control; P1, P2, and P3, exposed to MCS for 5, 7, and 9 h per day, respectively, for 21 days. Hematological blood analyses (red cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct)) were performed, and lung histopathology was evaluated using Manja Roenigk's criteria. The group exposed to MCS for 9 h/day showed a significant decrease in mean body weight (185.00 ± 9.59) (p = 0.008) compared with the control group. All treated groups had normal Hb and Hct levels and RBC indices, with no significant differences compared with the control group. The 9-hour exposure group had significantly lower lung weights than the control group (p<0.05), and all treatment groups showed significant differences in lung weight (p<0.05). Histopathological analysis revealed significant loss of alveolar septal integrity, leading to alveolar lumen rupture and development of emphysema. This study provides clear evidence of emphysema due to subacute allethrin-based MCS inhalation, although it did not affect hematological parameters in rats.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease often associated with complications such as peripheral arterial disease and neuropathy, increasing the risk of diabetic foot ulcers. Foot-ankle exercises are a non-pharmacological intervention believed to improve vascular circulation and nerve sensitivity. However, limited studies have evaluated their combined effects on the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) and foot sensitivity. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of foot-ankle exercises on ABI and foot sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was conducted at a Public Health Center, Bandung. Seventeen participants were selected from the Prolanis program through purposive sampling. The intervention group performed foot-ankle exercises three times per week for two weeks, while the control group received only educational booklets. ABI was measured using a vascular Doppler, and foot sensitivity was assessed with a 10-gram monofilament. The data were analyzed using paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. The results showed a significant increase in right ABI (from 95.86 to 115.43; p = 0.018), while left ABI did not significantly improve (p = 0.128). Foot sensitivity increased significantly on both the right (from 4.29 to 6.86; p = 0.027) and left feet (from 5.14 to 7.57; p = 0.043). Foot-ankle exercises significantly improve peripheral circulation (right ABI) and foot sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Future research is encouraged to further explore the long-term effects of foot-ankle exercises and to examine the impact of combining these exercises with other management approaches.
