Abstract

The Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the most important species in global aquaculture but remains highly vulnerable to bacterial, viral, and environmental stressors. Conventional reliance on antibiotics and chemicals has raised concerns over resistance and sustainability, underscoring the need for eco-friendly alternatives. Alginate, a natural polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweeds such as Sargassum, has emerged as a promising immunostimulant and functional feed additive. Experimental studies show that alginate supplementation enhances non-specific immune responses, including total haemocyte count, phenoloxidase, superoxide dismutase, phagocytic activity, and total plasma protein. At the molecular level, alginate upregulates immune-related genes (e.g., Toll, LGBP, proPO), resulting in higher resistance against Vibrio spp. and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). In addition, low molecular weight sodium alginate improves antioxidant activity and stress tolerance under cadmium exposure, while dietary supplementation supports growth performance and feed utilization. From a sustainability perspective, converting Sargassum biomass into alginate aligns with circular economy principles by transforming an abundant, underutilized seaweed into high-value aquafeed additives. This reduces dependency on antibiotics and synthetic chemicals while generating added value for coastal communities. Overall, alginate represents a multifunctional and cost-effective strategy to strengthen shrimp immunity, enhance resilience to pathogens and stressors, and promote environmentally responsible aquaculture production.

Abstract

Cangkring Village has various fishery resources, including ponds, fishponds, and access to waters that support fish farming. The Lecturer Returning Home Program aims to disseminate innovations in systems and appropriate technologies for integrated grouper fish farming through survey and training activities. This study used a survey method combined with a descriptive approach. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling to collect data from fish farmers in Cangkring Village. The survey research was conducted to identify and analyze the potential for grouper (Epinephelus sp.) nursery and rearing based on natural resources in Cangkring Village, Indramayu. Field observations, questionnaires, and interviews were used to collect data. The recommended stocking density is around 32 fish/m3 for grouper fish rearing in KJT measuring 3×6×1 m for an initial weight of 100‒200 g, and 1,500‒2,000 fish/m3 for grouper seeds in KJT measuring 1.5×1.0×0.5 m to 2.5×1.25×0.8 m. Trash fish have great potential for the development of grouper fish breeding in tanks and ponds as well as rearing in floating net cages/floating net cages (KJT) in the estuary waters of the Cimanuk River, Cangkring Village. In addition, the coastal waters and estuaries of Cangkring Village are rich in rebon shrimp, with an abundance of around 900‒1800 fish/L. The larger the fish seeds, the lower the stocking density. This community empowerment activity is an alternative for the community to improve education and skills in fish farming which can later increase income through an integrated system of grouper nursery and rearing based on natural resources.

Abstract

Marine-derived endophytic fungi represent an underexplored reservoir of biologically active metabolites and enzymes with industrial relevance. This study investigated the fungal diversity associated with seaweed, seagrass, and mangrove leaf tissues collected from Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi, with particular emphasis on antibacterial properties and cellulolytic activity. Thirty-two fungal isolates were successfully recovered and characterized based on morphological features. Antibacterial assays against Vibrio harveyi showed that several isolates, notably WB 1-2, WB 6-2, and SM 27-2, produced clear inhibition zones ranging from 11 to 13 mm, demonstrating notable antibacterial efficacy. Among all isolates, Aspergillus terreus (WB 1-2) exhibited the highest cellulase activity and was therefore selected for further enzymatic evaluation. The crude cellulase displayed maximum activity at pH 4 and a temperature of 70 °C. Hydrolysis products were qualitatively analyzed using HPLC, confirming the presence of glucose. These results highlight the dual potential of marine endophytic fungi as sources of antibacterial agents and thermostable cellulases. This work lays the groundwork for future development of eco-friendly enzyme production and marine-based antimicrobial resources, supporting sustainable biotechnological innovation within the blue economy framework.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of clove oil as a natural anesthetic for Batak fish juveniles during transportation. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatment levels of clove oil: P0 (control/0 ml/l), P1 (0.01 ml/l), P2 (0.02 ml/l), and P3 (0.03 ml/l), each with three replicates. Observed parameters included physiological responses (induction time, recovery time, and behavior), survival rate, and water quality before and after transportation. The results indicated that clove oil significantly affected the physiological responses of Batak fish juveniles, although it did not significantly influence survival rates, which remained above 90% for all treatments. The optimal concentration was 0.01 ml/L, with an average induction time of 64 minutes and recovery time of 1.15 minutes. During transportation, water temperature increased from 27.48 °C to 29.53 °C, pH decreased from 7.22 to 7.17, and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased from 5.38 mg/l to 5.32 mg/l. These changes remained within the tolerance range of Batak fish juveniles, thus not affecting survival. The findings demonstrate that clove oil effectively reduces physiological stress and maintains water quality, suggesting that it can be recommended as a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly natural anesthetic for transporting Batak fish juveniles.
