Abstract

Many EFL students show anxiety when speaking English in Indonesia. Therefore, when it comes to pedagogical context, critical discourse analysis (CDA) has a significant role to explore linguistics unit, socio-cultural context, and ideology of the text learners need to understand. This study aims at analysing the relation of language and power behind a text entitled ‘Driving Age, Increasing’ and making use of it to pedagogical context. The chosen text is an authentic material adopted from ‘Debatabase’, a book on building argumentative skills. By using Fairclough’s model (1989), the text was examined through three steps of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), namely description, interpretation, and explanation. Then, the analysis is interrelated with the nature of discussion text taught to the learners. The result of the analysis shows that the text is dominated by material, verbal, and relational processes, formal, complex, repetitive, evidence-based, multi-perspective, and over-wording dictions underpinned in an institutionalized social activity and unspecialized semantic domain. Further, the relationship between the author and the readers indicates there is equality in power shown by the provided equal analytical perspectives and evidence-based arguments to both conflicting parties toward the issue. As it fits the nature of discussion text, the paper ends with recommendations for EFL teachers to make use of CDA in raising learners’ language awareness.

Abstract

Video conferencing has become an essential tool in the realm of education, offering educators a plethora of features to enhance student learning. This study delved into the comparative impact of video conferencing and Learning Management Systems (LMS) on student engagement in online education. The primary objective was to discern the most effective mode of communication for fostering student engagement in online learning, examining cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of engagement. The researchers used a quasi-experimental design with a historical cohort control group to compare the effectiveness of Zoom and Moodle (LMS) on student engagement. The study involved English education students from a private university in Indonesia, with 20 students in each group. Data collection included recording online interactions, conducting semi-structured interviews, and administering a Likert-style survey. Data analysis involved content analysis, thematic analysis, and the Mann-Whitney U test. The findings underscored the advantages of utilizing Zoom, particularly in nurturing interpersonal relationships among students. Notably, the platform enhanced intimacy and interactivity within the learning environment, bolstering students' intrinsic motivation. Moreover, indicators such as creativity and idea exchange pointed towards heightened cognitive engagement facilitated by Zoom. Additionally, Zoom emerged as a practical tool for fostering social interaction and stimulating higher-order thinking during discussions. Consequently, these results provide compelling evidence supporting the integration of Zoom to enrich learning experiences and promote deeper engagement among students, both practically and theoretically.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the effectiveness of Duolingo on students' vocabulary. The researchers used quantitative methodologies with a quasi-experimental design in this research. This research used two classes that consist of experimental class and the control class as the sample. Class X OTKP served as the experimental class for this study, whereas Class X BDP served as the control class. Forty-six students made up the group. To gather data, the researchers employed multiple-choice vocabulary exams with 40 items. To calculate the data analysis, the researcher used the t-test formula. The finding shows that Ha was approved based on the data analysis. The results showed that ttest 2,8 and ttable = 2,00 with a significance of 5% (0,05) and ttable 2,42 with 1% (0,01). It means that ttest > ttable and Ha was accepted. Therefore, the use of Duolingo is effective for teaching English vocabulary in the tenth grade at SMK Trisakti Jaya Bandar Lampung. Meanwhile, the mean score of students' vocabulary in experimental class is higher than the mean score of students' vocabulary in control class (72.6 > 67,52). The results demonstrate that Duolingo is the solution for the teacher to teach vocabulary at one of Vocational School in Bandar Lampung.

Abstract

Schoology is a learning management system for students to create, control, and share the content of their learning resources. Also known as teaching media for the virtual learning experience, this course management system provides tools to administer classroom activity for the blended learning activity. The present study was aimed to analyze schoology effects on students’ writing ability, and to investigate the students’ curiosity towards schoology in the writing process. There were sixty students from the first semester students of English Department at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2018/2019. The samples composed of two groups that consist of the experimental and control group. The experimental class implemented Schoology and the control class applied conventional media. The writing test and questionnaire administered to accomplish the objective of the research. Paired and independent sample t-test was used for analyzing the quantitative data. The findings of the quantitative data revealed the use of schoology was more effective than the use of non-schoology. It was determined by the mean score from both of the groups (82 > 72). The difference (df) of both mean scores was statistically significant based on the t-test value at 0.05 significance level, and the probability value was smaller than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). In summary, the result of hypothesis testing found that t-value = 5.993 was higher than t-table = 2.000 (p=0.05, df =58). Ha was accepted, and Ho was rejected. In addition, the result of questionnaire analysis confirms that schoology platform was attractive for teaching and learning writing subject.
