Abstract

Improving decision-making in elementary school students through the application of the problem-based learning model   Abstract: The background of this research is that there are some students who are hesitant in answering problems, the lack of integration of decision making by teachers in the Civics learning process, and teachers have not really implemented the Problem-Based Learning model in Civics learning. The purpose of this research is to improve decision-making and explain the obstacles and solutions in implementing the Problem-Based Learning learning model. This research is a collaborative classroom action research between researchers and classroom teachers. The subjects of this study were teachers and third-grade students of Jemur State Elementary School in the 2023/2024 school year, totaling 26 students. The data used in this study are qualitative and quantitative data. The data collection techniques used were tests and non-tests. Data collection tools used evaluation sheets and interview sheets. The data validity test uses triangulation of sources and techniques. The analysis techniques used were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there was an increase in decision-making using the Problem-Based Learning model. In Cycle I, I obtained that there were 9 moderately skilled students and 17 skilled students, while in Cycle II, I obtained that there were 4 skilled students and 22 very skilled students. Obstacles and solutions in learning can be overcome well. So, it can be concluded that the Problem-Based Learning model can improve the decision-making of third-grade students.

Abstract

Technological advancements have shifted students’ social interactions from in-person to virtual, challenging them to develop healthy social relationships and collaborative skills in line with the demands of 21st-century education. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the social skills of elementary school students in Kebumen and Purworejo Regencies, specifically in rural and urban areas. This study employs a mixed-methods design with an explanatory sequential approach. Samples were selected using cluster sampling for students and purposive sampling for teachers, resulting in 107 fifth-grade students and 4 homeroom teachers from five elementary schools representing both rural and urban areas. Data were collected through a social skills questionnaire containing 20 Likert-scale items and a semi-structured interview guide. Quantitative data were analysed using comparative descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The results indicated that the average total social skills scores of both groups were relatively comparable, yet they exhibited complementary profiles. Rural students excelled in cooperation (3.504) and self-control (3.451), rooted in a culture of mutual assistance and social harmony, while urban students significantly excelled in assertiveness (3.783), driven by a competitive learning environment and public speaking training programs. Responsibility indicators were relatively balanced in both regions, with more than 85% of students achieving the high category. These findings imply the need for context-specific educational strategies namely, strengthening self-reliance in rural areas without undermining the value of mutual cooperation, and fostering cooperation and empathy in urban areas through collaborative learning. Character education policies must be responsive to regional differences in order to comprehensively develop students’ social skills.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to review recent empirical studies on the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in primary education, with particular attention to how different levels of immersion contribute to 21st-century learning. Methodology: This study followed PRISMA guidelines for a systematic literature review. Searches were conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar using the keywords (“Virtual Reality” OR “VR”) AND (“Primary Education” OR “Elementary School”). A total of 124 records were identified, 12 duplicates were removed, 34 records were screened, and 21 studies were included for final synthesis based on the eligibility criteria (peer-reviewed, 2019–2025, English, primary education context, full text accessible). Data were synthesized through qualitative content analysis by categorizing studies according to VR types (non-immersive, semi-immersive, fully immersive) and reported learning outcomes related to 21st-century skills. Main Findings: The research results indicate that: (1) Non-Immersive VR provides ease of access and use with a learning experience that is still limited to basic interactions; (2) Semi-immersive VR offers a more interactive and immersive learning experience through the use of more realistic simulations and visualizations; and (3) Fully immersive VR was most frequently reported in the reviewed studies and was associated with deeper multisensory engagement, enhanced conceptual understanding, and the development of 21st-century skills in primary education. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study offers a comparative synthesis of non-immersive, semi-immersive, and fully immersive VR in primary education and highlights the pedagogical factors that shape their educational contribution.
