Abstract

Abstract

Background: Worm infection is one of the health problems in Indonesia. Worm infections can disrupt nutrient requirements, hinder growth, intellectual development, and affect the immune system, making the body susceptible to other diseases. Selenium is a micronutrient with great potential to influence the immune system. The mechanism of action of selenium includes antioxidant activity, protecting against oxidative damage, maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosa, and anti-apoptotic function in the large intestine. Selenium can enhance the host's immune response by increasing the activity of Alternative Activated Macrophages (AAM), which are the main macrophages in fighting intestinal parasitic worms.  Research Objective: To determine the relationship between worm infections and selenium intake. Research Method: Analytical research using a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was done using total sampling technique on elementary school children in the Tabaringan Health Center working area in Makassar City, aged 7-9 years.  Research Results: The frequency distribution of positive worm infections was 22.2%, equivalent to 8 samples, and negative worm infections were 77.8%, equivalent to 28 samples. Adequacy of selenium intake in the samples showed 16.7% inadequacy, equivalent to 6 samples, and 83.3% adequacy, equivalent to 30 samples. The analysis of the relationship between worm infections and selenium intake yielded a P-value = 0.151. Conclusion: There is no relationship between worm infections and selenium intake in children in the Tabaringan Health Center working area in Makassar City.

Abstract

Introduction: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterium from the Enterobacteriaceae family and is considered one of the most dangerous pathogens. Antibiotics are crucial for treating acute bacterial infections. Using probiotics has become one of the supportive and curative efforts in managing the growth of K. pneumoniae. One probiotic derived from microorganisms is Lactobacillus rhamnosus. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of L. rhamnosus on the growth of K. pneumoniae in mice (Mus musculus). Methods: This was an experimental post-test study. The study population consisted of mice aged 3 to 4 months, weighing 20 to 40 grams, determined using Federer’s formula. Mice were given standard feed and sterile distilled water. A total of 30 mice were tested and divided into five treatment groups. The distribution colony count test was used for evaluation. Results: Among the five groups studied, probiotic intervention in the group receiving a combination of L. rhamnosus and the antibiotic ceftriaxone showed effective results (p<0.05), as did the group given only the probiotic L. rhamnosus (p<0.05). In contrast, the other groups did not show effective results (p>0.05). Conclusion: The administration of L. rhamnosus is effective as a supportive and curative treatment, but it is not effective as a preventive measure against the growth of K. pneumoniae in mice.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia often initiates the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis which can occur slowly. As free radicals increase, the need for antioxidants also increases. Reducing LDL and increasing HDL levels is the target of therapy for hyperlipidemia patients with the main goals of lifestyle changes and drug therapy. Olive oil and fig extract have therapeutic benefits as alternative treatments from MUFA content dominated by oleic acid and phenolic compounds. The polyphenol content is known to inhibit the formation of atherosclerosis and inhibit the increase in MCP-1 levels in white mice on a high-fat diet. Therefore, it is hoped that the administration of figs extract and olive oil can overcome dyslipidemia, especially changes in HDL and LDL levels in white mice. To determine changes in HDL and LDL levels. The research conducted was a true experimental research was used with a Pre-Post control group research design and test statistical analysis with Microsoft Office 2013. Showed there was an effect of fig extract (Ficus Carica L) on changes in HDL levels and the effect of olive oil (Olea europea L) on changes in LDL levels in white rats (Rattus novergicus) fed a high-fat diet. The intervention of fig extract and olive oil had a significant effect on the group given the single intervention.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a serious long-term (or 'chronic') condition caused by increased levels of glucose in the blood because the body cannot produce one or enough of the insulin hormones, or cannot use the insulin it produces effectively. IDF data, the global prevalence of DM in 2019 is estimated at 9.3% (463 million people), increasing to 10.2% (578 million) in 2030 and 10.9% (700 million) in 2045 (IDF, 2019). Research results (Riskesdas) in 2018, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in South Sulawesi diagnosed by doctors was 1.8% and 1.3%. WHR is a method for assessing fat accumulation in the body. The risk of DM is more related to intra-abdominal fat than subcutaneous fat. WHR was shown to be a better predictor of type 2 DM risk compared with BMI. The WHR limit for men in Asia Pacific is >0.9 and women >0.85. To determine the relationship between RLPP and fasting blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at the Tabarringan Community Health Center. This research is an analytical study using the Cross Sectional method, to determine the relationship between Fasting Blood Glucose and Waist-Hip Ratio. The research results showed that from 65 respondents a p-value was obtained of 0.514 > 0.05 so that Hnull was accepted and H1 was rejected. So the results obtained are that there is no relationship between WHR and fasting blood sugar levels. There is no relationship between WHR and fasting blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at the Tabarringan Community Health Center.
