Abstract

This study aims to describe the assignment model in inclusive education as an effort to foster tolerance at the Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation over a one-year period. The results indicate that tolerance education at Gontor is implemented through two main models: direct tolerance education, which emphasizes cross-group interaction between students, and indirect tolerance education, which focuses on developing an open personality toward differences. The assignment model is an integral part of leadership education, where students are given various tasks that require responsibility, collaboration, and initiative in organizations and social activities. Through assignments, students learn to lead, cooperate, and manage their time, thus fostering active and passive tolerance in the daily life of the Islamic boarding school. This model has proven effective in developing the character of students who are tolerant, disciplined, and ready to live in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

This study explores the role of translation tests in assessing Arabic language proficiency, with a theoretical foundation and practical implementation aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The study adopts a descriptive-qualitative method using literature review and content analysis. The research instrument used was an analysis sheet for translation test items, developed from a synthesis of translation assessment models proposed by Newmark, Catford, and the CEFR, covering levels A1 to C2. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques, including categorization, data reduction, cognitive-level mapping based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, and theoretical triangulation to ensure interpretive accuracy. These tests are mapped to Bloom’s Taxonomy to measure a spectrum of cognitive abilities from basic recall to creative synthesis. Results show that translation tests effectively evaluate key aspects of Arabic language proficiency, including comprehension of meaning, structural accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and both interpretive and productive abilities. At the A1–A2 levels, translation tests were used to assess learners’ ability to understand basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures, while at the B1–B2 levels, the tests assessed learners’ competence in interpreting contextual meanings, idiomatic expressions, and relationships between ideas. At the C1–C2 levels, translation tests demonstrated effectiveness in assessing analytical and evaluative skills, as well as the accurate reproduction of meaning in accordance with Arabic cultural and pragmatic contexts. Additionally, the study highlights four main evaluation methods: impressionistic, group, analytical, and mechanical to ensure valid and reliable scoring. The findings support the use of translation tests as a comprehensive tool for measuring communicative performance and language mastery in Arabic learning contexts. Abstract

Although the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has become an international standard for language assessment, standardized CEFR-based Arabic speaking assessment instruments remain limited, particularly those that operationalize the CEFR Companion Volume descriptors into authentic communicative tasks. This study aimed to develop a prototype of a CEFR B1-based Arabic speaking assessment by integrating Ali Al-Khuli’s speaking task framework with the CEFR Companion Volume descriptors. Employing a Design and Development Research approach, the study involved document analysis of CEFR descriptors and relevant literature on Arabic language assessment. The development process comprised needs analysis, descriptor mapping, assessment blueprint design, task adaptation, rubric development, and prototype construction. The resulting prototype consists of fifteen authentic communicative speaking tasks systematically aligned with CEFR B1 descriptors and an analytic scoring rubric encompassing pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, fluency, interaction, coherence, content relevance, and delivery. The prototype emphasizes communicative performance through contextualized speaking activities and multidimensional assessment criteria, providing a more comprehensive framework than conventional grammar-oriented speaking tests. Although empirical validation and psychometric evaluation were beyond the scope of this study, the proposed prototype establishes a theoretically grounded foundation for future validation. It contributes to the development of standardized, transparent, and internationally aligned Arabic-speaking assessment practices.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the implementation of Computerized Adaptive Testing based on ACTFL standards at Universitas Darussalam Gontor (UNIDA). In the midst of the increasing adoption of global language assessment standards. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing thematic analysis. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with university leaders, quality assurance units, lecturers, system developers, and students. The results show that CAT-ACTFL not only functions as an instrument for measuring language proficiency, but also becomes an important part of academic governance, curriculum management, and the strengthening of data-based quality assurance systems. Its implementation reflects a strategic alignment between global assessment standards and UNIDA's institutional vision framework, positioning Arabic as a pillar of academic policy and learning planning. This study introduces a new model of Pesantren-Aligned Language Assessment Governance as a key novelty, demonstrating that the global CAT-ACTFL standards can integrate harmoniously with the local values of pesantren. This research makes a significant contribution to educational management by transforming static quality assurance into a dynamic, data-driven system for differentiating Arabic language instruction in higher education. Nevertheless, this research also indicates the importance of further evaluation of the quality of the ACTFL instruments used. Therefore, further research is recommended to conduct validity and reliability testing and to analyze the item characteristics of the CAT-ACTFL instruments using psychometric approaches, such as Item Response Theory (IRT) and the Rasch Model, to ensure more precise and scientific measurement of language proficiency.

Abstract

This study analyzes the speaking skill tests presented in the book Ikhtibarāt Lughawiyyah by Muhammad Ali Khun, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The study employed a qualitative methodology using a document analysis approach, with the aforementioned book as the primary source, while CEFR descriptors and relevant literature served as secondary sources. The analysis revealed 17 types of speaking skill tests, including: oral reading, oral questions, oral repetition, sentence transformation, picture description, dialogue, interviews, pronunciation, phoneme tests, map-based questions, free speech, time-telling, substitution, and oral compensation. Among these tests, 6 align with the beginner level (A1–A2), 5 with the intermediate level (B1–B2), while 6 tests do not have a clear classification according to the CEFR. The findings indicate an imbalance between receptive and productive skills, as well as the absence of a clear guideline for matching levels to the CEFR. The study recommends developing tests aligned with the CEFR, achieving balance between language skills, and applying a progression of difficulty levels, in order to enhance communicative competence and linguistic accuracy among learners.

Abstract

Haflatul Tilawatil Al-Qur’an (HTQ) is a program designed to nurture a generation well-versed in the Quran, aiming to enhance students' abilities to read, memorize, and grasp the values within the Quran. This study seeks to examine the implementation of HTQ activities at various institutions such as TPA, TPQ, and Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah throughout Poso District, which took place at Gontor Campus 11 to facilitate the cultivation of a Quranic generation. The approach taken is Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving students, mentors, parents, organizers, and community leaders. Data was gathered using techniques such as observation, interviews, group discussions, and documentation, followed by descriptive qualitative analysis. The findings reveal that HTQ activities significantly boost reading skills, Quran memorization, understanding of Islamic values, as well as foster religious character, self-confidence, and social skills among participants. This initiative also enhances cooperation among educational institutions, families, and communities in supporting Quranic education. However, challenges still exist in terms of facilities and ongoing training that require further attention. Thus, it is essential for HTQ activities to be developed in a systematic and continuous manner to help create a high-quality Quranic generation.

Abstract

Reading skills tests in Arabic language teaching constitute an essential component of language assessment, as they function not only to measure students’ comprehension of written texts but also to diagnose their reading abilities and guide instructional improvement. However, the forms of reading assessments specifically designed for beginner learners of Arabic as a foreign language remain insufficiently discussed in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze appropriate forms of reading skills tests for preparatory and beginner levels in Arabic language learning. This study employed a qualitative approach using library research methods. Data were collected from relevant journal articles, books, theses, dissertations, and other scholarly sources related to Arabic language assessment and reading instruction. The data were analyzed descriptively to classify the forms, objectives, and characteristics of reading tests suitable for novice learners. The findings reveal that reading assessments for beginner learners should be developed progressively, beginning with letter recognition, sound discrimination, vocabulary recognition, word-picture matching, sentence comprehension, simple text understanding, and basic reading analysis. Furthermore, effective reading tests should align with learners’ cognitive and linguistic development as well as with the basic competencies of Arabic reading instruction. The results of this study have significant implications for Arabic language education. They provide a conceptual framework and practical guidelines for teachers in designing valid and appropriate reading assessments for beginner learners. In addition, the findings contribute to curriculum development and facilitate more accurate diagnosis of students’ reading difficulties, thereby improving the effectiveness of Arabic language instruction for non-native speakers.
