Abstract

Introduction: Current technological developments are very fast making it easier for people to carry out all activities via smartphones. One of the frequently used smartphone functions is typing and sending messages. Typing and sending messages can be done anytime and anywhere. Typing messages on a smartphone while walking falls into the dual-task category. This study aims to analyze the effect of using dual-task texting on cervical region muscle activity on smartphone users, where smartphone users type messages while walking. Methods: The method used is a single-group repeated experimental design. A total of 36 subjects consisted of 19 women and 17 men with an age range of 21.28 ± 0.97 years. The parameter measured is the upper trapezius muscle activity. Subjects were asked to walk in five conditions, namely baseline walking, texting flashcard 1, texting flashcard 2, texting flashcard 3, and texting flashcard 4. All experiments recorded upper trapezius muscle activity using an electromyograph. Results: The results of repeated measure ANOVA stated that typing on a smartphone had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on young respondents increasing activity of the upper trapezius muscle. Conclusion: Dual-task texting significantly affects cervical region muscle activity, particularly in the upper trapezius muscle on the right side, which has the potential to increase the risk of muscle fatigue in smartphone users.

Abstract

Introduction: Scoliosis is defined as the lateral curvature of the spine reaching an angle of 10 degrees or more on coronal radiographs when an individual is standing. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), around 3% of the global population is at risk of experiencing scoliosis, while in Indonesia, the prevalence of scoliosis ranges between 3% and 5%. Leg length discrepancy is a situation where the length of both lower extremities is unbalanced. Leg length discrepancy can lead to various issues in body posture, such as scoliosis. This study aims to investigate the relationship between scoliosis and leg length discrepancy in children aged 4-6 years. The degree of scoliosis was measured using a scoliometer, and leg length examination was conducted using a measuring tape. Methods: This study is a quantitative research with a cross-sectional research design. The sample size was 567, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion, exclusion, and dropout criteria. Results: The results, obtained using the Nonparametric Correlation Test with the Spearman Rank Test, indicate the absence of a relationship between leg length discrepancy and scoliosis, with a p-value of 0.189 (p>0.05) and a correlation strength level of 0.055, meaning the correlation is very weak, and the direction of the relationship is positive or in the same direction. Conclusion: There is no relationship between leg length discrepancy and scoliosis in children aged 4-6 years.

Abstract

Introduction: Muscle activation is the interaction of intracellular cell fluid and extracellular cell fluid that occurs in the cell membrane channel and can also be defined as the movement of muscle contraction and relaxation accompanied by changes in muscle fibre length. To determine differences in muscle activation in the legs (m. gastrocnemius, m. tibialis anterior, m. rectus femoris, m. biceps femoris longum, m. gluteus maximus) when walking in various floor/base conditions (stable, unstable, and slippery) using a Surface Electromyograph (sEMG). Methods: The research method used is Experimental Single Group Design where the researcher involves only 1 group consisting of 5 subjects. Results: The results of this study first used the repeat ANOVA test with scores obtained on stable floor conditions (0.000), unstable floor conditions (0.000), and slippery floor conditions (0.000). Conclusion: From the results of research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that there are differences in leg muscle activation as measured using Surface Electromyograph (sEMG) when walking on a stable, unstable, and slippery floor.

Abstract

Nowdays, the backpack is designed multipurpose to carry all human needs. However, the excessive load on the backpack could lead to the postural problem that disturbs the human activities. People carry various loads of backpack in different positions every day and it tends to significant changes in physical performances such as walking speed and cadence . Carrying backpacks can cause the undesired posture which in turns can cause muscle fatigue, back pain, and spinal deformity eventually for the severity case. Standing and walking with backpacks may affect both static and dynamic balances which induce postural instability. Purpose: To identify the effect of 10% backpack load on gait speed during walking among university students Methodology: This observational study used repetitive experimental measured. Results: in backpack load comparison in the 10-meter walkway, the gait speed was significantly different between walking with and without load (p< 0.001). In 3-meter gait speed, there were significant different speed among normal, fast, and slow gait in each walking condition, with and without backpack load (p <0.05), respectively. For pos-hoc analysis, there were significantly different in normal and fast gait speed (p = 0.001), and fast and slow gait speed (p = 0.007), but there were significant differences of normal and slow gait speed (p = 0.314) in walking 3m without backpack load. Then, there were significantly different in normal and fast gait speed (p = 0.007), and normal and slow gait speed (p = 0.038), but there were significant differences of fast and slow gait speed (p = 0.445) in walking 3m with backpack load. Applications/Originality/Value: this study was the pilot study that tested the gait speed among university student who uses the backpack Keywords: backpack, load, gait speed
