Abstract

Background: Obesity in female students affects metabolic profiles and reproduction. Consuming a plant-based diet can inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of obesity. The lipid profile plays a crucial role in metabolism and includes high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which has a protective effect against cardiovascular disorders, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Objective: To analyze the effect of flexitarian diets on changes in serum HDL levels in obese female students. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pre-post-test control group was employed. Twenty-two female students aged 19-25 years were selected using consecutive sampling. The subjects were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received a flexitarian diet for 4 weeks consisting of three meals and two snacks totaling 1500 calories per day. Both groups were provided with educational leaflets about obesity and balanced nutrition. Food intake was assessed using a 3x24-hour food recall, while physical activity was measured using the IPAQ-SF questionnaire. Serum HDL levels were analyzed enzymatically before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 25, including the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was a significant decrease in serum HDL levels in the intervention group (2.00 ± 2.83 mg/dL), while serum HDL levels in the control group increased (3.27 ± 8.25 mg/dL), although this increase was not statistically significant. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean change in HDL levels (p > 0.05).Conclusion: A flexitarian diet for 4 weeks can lead to a significant reduction in serum HDL levels.

Abstract

Having premarital sexual intercourse has a broad risk impact on health. This is in accordance with the teachings of Islam that should be upheld by all Muslims, with no exception for students living in Islamic boarding schools. To Islamic values and culture, students should have strong self-efficacy to prevent them from engaging in sexual behavior. This study aims to determine the effect of self-efficacy on the sexual behavior of students living in Islamic boarding schools. This cross-sectional study sampled 150 students who lived in Islamic boarding school in Semarang, Indonesia. Students at Islamic boarding schools who had premarital sex were more likely to be found in adolescents aged 19 years (15.2%), male (9.5%), had low self-efficacy (18.2%), and ever accessed pornography (23.1%). Accessing pornography was influenced by sex (p = 0.021, OR = 0.235), while premarital sexual intercourse behavior was influenced by age (p = 0.013, OR = 10.716) and self-efficacy (p = 0.043, OR = 4.602). Younger students with low self-efficacy are more likely to practice premarital sexual intercourse. This study found that accessing pornography had no effect on the practice of sex carried out by students in Islamic boarding schools. The health ministry needs to work with the religious affairs ministry to design programs aimed at increasing self-efficacy among students in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on the results of the 2018 Basic Health Research, it was found that only 39.1% of households implemented clean and healthy living behavior (CHLB). During the COVID-19 pandemic, students living in dormitory and at home continue their studies at the Modern Islamic Boarding School. The differences in living conditions have an impact on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) and infectious diseases (COVID-19). Aims:  this research is to compare CHLB and infectious diseases (COVID-19) between students living at dormitory and home. Methods: A cross-sectional design study was conducted in January-February 2023 at Madrasah Aliah Mranggen, Demak, involving 232 students aged 16-18 years. The sample size is calculated using a formula to test the difference in means between two unpaired population groups with numerical data.  Subjects were selected through systematic random sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a household CHLB questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Mann Whitney and Chi Square Test. Results: showed no differences in age, CHLB, and infectious diseases among students living at dormitory and home. There were differences in handwashing with soap and water after using the toilet (p=0.041) and handling money (p=0.014), as well as the absence of smoking by dormitory mates/family members inside the Home/dormitory (p=0.001) between the two groups. Conclusion: There were no differences in CHLB and infectious diseases (COVID-19) between students living in dormitories and at home during the COVID-19pandemic.

Abstract

Stunting, characterized by impaired growth and development in children under five, is a major health issue caused by chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections during the first 1000 days of life. Protein intake is crucial for the provision of essential amino acids necessary for optimal growth and immune function. This study aimed to analyze the effect of whey protein-based high-protein biscuits on short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) levels in stunted children. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-post test group was used. Thirty-six stunted children were divided into two groups: the intervention group received whey protein-based high-protein biscuits, while the control group received an equivalent protein source from eggs and tempeh. SCFA levels were measured before and after the intervention. Paired T-tests and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical analysis. The study found that high-protein biscuits significantly increased SCFA levels (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) in the intervention group (p-value < 0.001). These findings suggest that high-protein biscuits can positively influence gut microbiota and overall health in stunted children. High-protein biscuits can effectively increase SCFA levels in stunted children, contributing to improved gut health. Future studies should explore the long-term effects and potential risks associated with this intervention

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of stunting among student aged children in Indonesia is relatively high (24.5%). Stunting can threaten the quality of human resources one day. Lead exposure, particularly from pesticides, is thought to disrupt children's development and growth. This study aims to demonstrate that high blood lead levels (BLL) is a risk factor of stunting for children who lives in agricultural areas through the intermediate variable, namely interference with growth hormone (IGF-1). Methods: This study used a case-control design, involving 35 cases (children with HAZ scores of less than -2 SD) and 40 controls (children with HAZ scores of more than -1.5 SD). BLL were measured using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) method. Meanwhile, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels using an ELISA kit (R&D Systems). BLL variables and IGF-1 levels were determined using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results and Discussion: High BLL (>20.44 μg/dL) and low IGF-1 levels (<100 ng/ml) were identified risk factors for stunting in children in agricultural areas with odd ratios (OR) od 2.8 (1.1-7.1) and 3.3 (1.3-8.5) respectively. Meanwhile, a negative correlation was discovered between BLL and IGF-1 levels (p = 0.002, r = -0.356). Conclusion: High lead exposure has been proven to be a risk factor for stunting in children in agricultural areas through the process of interference with the growth hormone, namely IGF-1. Efforts to prevent stunting, especially in agricultural areas, need to take into account exposure to environmental toxicants, including lead from pesticides.
