Abstract

Stunting can affect brain development, physical growth, and metabolism, while obesity can increase the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Maternal and family characteristics may influence obesity in mothers paired with stunting in children in the same household. This study examines the relationship between maternal and family characteristics and the occurrence of stunting in families with overweight or obese mothers in Semarang. This study used an observational, cross-sectional design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, with 25 subjects per group, resulting in a total of 50 subjects across the two groups. Data on maternal and family characteristics were obtained through interviews using a validated questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were conducted to obtain data on the weight, height, and nutritional status of mothers and children. Bivariate analysis used the Chi-square test to examine the odds ratio, while multivariate analysis employed multiple logistic regression. Bivariate analysis showed that the adequacy of energy and carbohydrate intake in toddlers and the maternal education level were significantly associated with stunting occurrence among households with an overweight/obese mother (SCOWT/SCOM). Multivariate analysis showed that the maternal height and education level were significantly associated with SCOWT/SCOM. Mothers with short stature had a 4.613 times higher risk, and mothers with primary to secondary education had an 8.205 times higher risk of SCOWT/SCOM. Maternal height and educational level are key factors in cases of stunted growth with SCOWT/SCOM.

Abstract

Anemia among Indonesian adolescent girls remains a major issue, with 15.5% nationally and 49.47% in Pekalongan affected. Ferritin, a sensitive marker of iron stores, reflects early iron deficiency influenced by diet, enhanced by vitamin C, and inhibited by calcium and phytic acid. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between iron, enhancer, and inhibitor intake and ferritin and hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls. An observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 80 female students in Pekalongan, Central Java. Intake of iron, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, calcium, and phytic acid was assessed using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Hemoglobin levels were measured using a Hematology Analyzer, and ferritin was analyzed using the ELISA method. Data were analyzed using Pearson or Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression tests. The results show that ferritin levels were significantly correlated with iron (r = 0.293; p = 0.008) and vitamin C intake (r = 0.298; p = 0.007), and negatively correlated with calcium and phytic acid (r = –0.673; p < 0.001). Hemoglobin levels were correlated with protein (r=0.232; p=0.035), calcium (r=–0.240; p=0.032), and phytic acid (r=–0.241; p=0.032). Multivariate analysis revealed that ferritin levels were influenced simultaneously by iron, vitamin C, and calcium intake (CI: 95%, p < 0.001), while hemoglobin levels were influenced simultaneously by protein, fiber, and phytic acid intake (CI: 95%, p = 0.019). Iron, vitamin C, calcium, protein, fiber, and phytic acid intake influence ferritin and hemoglobin levels. Ferritin should be used as an early marker of iron deficiency, and interventions promoting higher iron and vitamin C intake while limiting inhibitors are recommended for adolescent girls.

Abstract

Adolescent obesity is an increasing public health problem in Indonesia, influenced by economic disparities, demographic factors, and lifestyle changes. This study aimed to analyze the socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle factors associated with adolescent obesity using data from the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (IHS). This cross-sectional study involved 46,432 adolescents aged 10–19 years, classified as obese based on BMI-for-age z-scores using total sampling. The variables examined included age, sex, education, wealth index, place of residence, consumption of sweet, salty, and fatty foods, soft drinks, energy drinks, instant noodles, physical activity, and smoking. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using chi-square tests and multivariately using logistic regression. The results showed that wealth index and instant noodle consumption were significantly associated with obesity (p < 0.05). Consumption of fatty, fried, and cholesterol-rich foods (p = 0.032; OR = 0.956) and energy drinks (p = 0.034; OR = 1.104) were identified as significant risk factors. In conclusion, high-fat dietary patterns and energy drink consumption increase the risk of obesity. The widespread availability of unhealthy foods in both urban and rural areas poses challenges to obesity prevention. Therefore, interventions that promote healthy eating behaviors among adolescents, such as school-based nutrition education, social media campaigns, and community-based initiatives are essential.

Abstract

Adolescent girls tend to have a higher risk of anemia because their nutritional demands increase during growth and the onset of menstruation. Both anemia and nutritional status have been proposed to affect sleep quality through various physiological pathways. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the relationship between ferritin and hemoglobin levels and nutritional status and how these factors are associated with sleep quality among adolescent girls. A cross-sectional study will be conducted in April–May 2025 with a total of 80 participants from Pekalongan Regency. Information on sleep quality was obtained using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, ferritin levels were examined using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and hemoglobin levels were assessed using a hematology analyzer. To explore the relationships among ferritin levels, hemoglobin, and nutritional status with sleep quality, a multivariate regression analysis was employed. Bivariate analysis revealed that hemoglobin levels (p= 0.005) and nutritional status (p= 0.007) were significantly associated with sleep quality, whereas ferritin levels were not (p= 0.054). In the multivariate analysis, only hemoglobin level was significantly associated with sleep quality (p < 0.001). These results indicate that lower hemoglobin levels may play a role in worsening sleep quality among adolescent girls, underscoring the need to promote anemia prevention through enhanced nutritional intake.
