Abstract

The concern surrounding halal and haram products is a focal point for legal scholars and historians, sparking ongoing debates within various societal sectors. This study delves into the historical evolution of halal branding within the culinary industry in Medan. Historical methods and qualitative approaches, encompassing literature reviews, observations, interviews, and documentation, were employed to gather data. Findings emphasize the pivotal role of halal branding in ensuring the safety, comfort, and availability of halal products, impacting the well-being of a diverse population. The journey began in 1976 with the introduction of a logo signifying the presence of pork, subsequently gaining momentum in 1988 when researchers from the University of Brawijaya Faculty of Enforcement identified food products suspected of pork content. A year later, the Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia - MUI) established the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Assessment Institute (LPPOM) to oversee halal certification. The enactment of the Halal Product Assurance Law (UUJPH) in late 2014 mandated that all products circulating within Indonesia must hold halal certification, coinciding with the establishment of the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Abstract

Background. Crop disease is a major threat to smallholder farmers who lack access to timely diagnostic tools. Traditional detection methods rely on visual inspection and often occur too late to prevent significant yield losses. Early detection using hyperspectral imaging and artificial intelligence presents a transformative solution for precision agriculture in resource-limited settings. Purpose. This study aims to develop and evaluate an AI-assisted early detection system for crop diseases using hyperspectral imaging and deep learning, tailored for application in smallholder farms. Method. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model was trained on hyperspectral data collected from five farm sites, with ground-truth annotations by agricultural experts. The model’s performance was evaluated using standard classification metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. A case study was also conducted to assess real-world applicability. Results. The model achieved an average detection accuracy of 94.2% across all locations, with F1-score reaching 0.92 when using hyperspectral features. Confusion matrix analysis indicated high true positive and true negative rates, confirming reliability. In a field case, early diagnosis enabled targeted intervention and improved yield by 22% compared to prior seasons. Conclusion. The integration of hyperspectral imaging and deep learning offers a practical and scalable solution for early disease detection in smallholder farms. The system demonstrates high accuracy, adaptability, and operational feasibility in real-world conditions. Future work should focus on expanding crop and disease types, user interface development, and integration with mobile and IoT-based platforms.

Abstract

Forest and peatland fires in Riau Province, Indonesia, are a recurrent environmental disaster with severe regional and global consequences. Traditional fire danger rating systems often fail to capture the complex interplay of factors driving these events. The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) offers an opportunity to develop more accurate and dynamic fire risk prediction models. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-performance, AI-powered model for predicting daily forest fire risk at a high spatial resolution across Riau Province by integrating climate, peatland, and land use data. We integrated historical satellite-detected fire hotspots (2015-2023) as the dependent variable. Predictor variables included daily climate data (e.g., temperature, precipitation, wind speed), static peatland characteristics (e.g., depth, type), and dynamic land use/land cover data. An XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting) machine learning algorithm was trained to learn the complex, non-linear relationships between these drivers and fire occurrence. The model’s predictive performance was rigorously evaluated using the Area Under the Curve (AUC) metric. The XGBoost model demonstrated high predictive accuracy, achieving an AUC of 0.93. The analysis revealed that the number of consecutive dry days, peatland depth, and proximity to oil palm plantations were the most influential variables in predicting fire risk. The model successfully generated daily 1-km resolution fire risk maps, identifying specific areas with elevated danger. The AI-powered model provides a robust and significantly more accurate tool for forest fire forecasting in fire-prone tropical peatland landscapes. This approach offers a critical advancement for developing effective early warning systems, enabling targeted resource allocation for fire prevention and mitigation efforts.
