Abstract

STEM education in indonesia has become a commitment for all of stakeholders in the field of science education in the last several years. All education participants agree to increase the popularity of STEM education in various parties, especially teachers and students. The research has been conducted to see to what extent science teachers in the secondary school interpret and understand STEM education and how Students pertain toward STEM learning. The research was conducted with a descriptive method using a survey approach. A set of questionnaire which comprises open-ended and closed-ended questions about teachers’ and students’ perceptions and understanding regarding STEM education were developed and applied. Responses from science teachers as well as students were then analysed through interpretative methods in which the participants’ own meanings and points of view were sought. The result indicated that STEM education is quite well understood by science teachers. Most of teachers show the same level of understanding toward STEM Education. Unfortunately, not many teachers have applied the STEM approach for science learning in the classroom. This is led to the weak understanding of STEM learning in students’side. Most of students did not familiar with “STEM learning” term. Based on the research, it is reccomended that the science teachers’ training and development should be reorientated and implemented through lesson analysis with various best practices on STEM learning systematically and continually.

Abstract

This study aims to measure students' scientific literacy and collaboration skills. The method used was survey research on 267 high school students in Jakarta. The instrument in this study was a scientific literacy test of 40 multiple-choice PISA items developed by Moore and Foy (1997) and a non-test instrument in a rubric observation sheet to measure students' collaboration skills. The results show that students' scientific literacy is at a moderate level. Of 27 students, there are 3% of students with very high scientific literacy skills, 7% of students with high scientific literacy skills, 64% of students with moderate scientific literacy skills, 11% of students with low scientific literacy skills, and 15% of students with very low scientific literacy skills. The research concludes that scientific literacy is a skill that students must possess. Scientific literacy and collaboration skills are needed to face the demands of 21st-century learning with the rapid development of technology and knowledge.

Abstract

Nowadays, environmental initiatives and campaign activities are promoted massively in Bandung City. These activities are part of the program to achieve sustainable development goals at the municipal level. Text mining methods from online news and media were conducted to understand the implication of the program to the pro-environmental behavior and consciousness of the Bandung City residents. A questionnaire survey to 340 residents of Bandung City was also distributed randomly to see the relationship between sociodemographic profiles (age and education level) and pro-environmental behavior of the respondents. Results showed that the Kang Pisman program became the highest environmentally friendly movement program promoted through mass media. This result also correspondence to the questionnaire survey in which people in Bandung City try to reduce their produced waste. Besides, education level is insignificant, and age becomes one-factor influencing environmental behavior. The interesting point is that the government should enhance organic waste management since many people are unwilling to process their organic waste. To promote, educate, and engage residents in pro-environmental behavior, stakeholders should conduct environmentally friendly movements, thus achieving local SDGs target.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Socioscientific Issue (SSI)-based petroleum materials integrated with the eLSMAWAR website on students’ scientific literacy during the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, it still targets the achievement of 21st-century skills, namely scientific literacy competencies. Scientific literacy is needed as a skill that can answer the demands of the 21st-century era, as a problem solver that is competitive, innovative, creative, collaborative, and has character. This research method uses Research and Development (R D), which refers to Borg and Gall’s development model. The instrument used in this study was an expert validation sheet filled in by a validator which was useful for knowing whether it was feasible or not to develop. Students are given ten descriptive questions on a 1-4 Likert scale to determine the effect of teaching materials on scientific literacy. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive quantitative. Expert validation resulted in an average percentage of 87% on material, presentation, language, and legibility aspects. For the validation of chemistry educators, the mean score of CVI for the language aspect and legibility is 0.80; the material aspect is 0.86; for the presentation, aspect is 0.84. This means that based on chemistry experts and educators, the criteria for SSI-based petroleum materials integrated with the eLSMAWAR website are appropriate/valid and very suitable for use. The scientific literacy test results obtained an N-Gain of 0.66, which means that the SSI-based teaching materials integrated with the eLSMAWAR website are quite effective in improving students’ scientific literacy. The research concludes that the teaching material based on Socioscientific Issue (SSI) integrated with the eLSMAWAR website on students’ scientific literacy with three indicators of scientific literacy is following the demands of the implementation of 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Learning that does not accommodate the learning styles of all students will experience boredom and a decrease in the critical level of students. This study aims to determine the effect of VARK learning style-based chemistry learning on improving students' critical thinking skills. The study used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design and one group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted on 65 students of the State Islamic Senior High School in Bogor. The instrument used was an essay test of ten questions that met the criteria for critical thinking indicators. The instrument trials used were validity and reliability tests. Next, the Paired T-Test and N-Gain Tests were carried out. Based on the Paired T-Test, a significance value of 0.00 was obtained, indicating that Ho was rejected, so there were differences in students' critical thinking skills before and after the VARK-based chemistry learning was implemented. The results of the N-Gain test increased students' critical thinking skills on average by 0.68 in the moderate category. This study concludes that VARK-based chemistry learning on molecular geometry material can improve students' critical thinking skills.
