Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of baju bodo as a symbol of the cultural identity of the Bugis-Makassar community and its preservation efforts in the modern era. Baju bodo is one of the oldest traditional clothes in Indonesia that has high historical, symbolic, and philosophical value. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and literature studies. The results of the study indicate that baju bodo not only functions as a body cover, but also represents social status, local aesthetic values, and cultural wisdom that is passed down from generation to generation. The transformation of the design, color, and material of baju bodo is an adaptive strategy to remain relevant amidst the development of the times without eliminating its traditional meaning. This innovation allows baju bodo to be used in modern contexts such as formal events, education, and fashion shows. This study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between cultural communities, government, and local designers to maintain the sustainability of cultural heritage. Thus, baju bodo remains a symbol of the Bugis-Makassar cultural identity that is alive, developing, and proud in the modern era

Abstract

The mismanagement of waste poses serious environmental and public health issues in Indonesia, exacerbated by the increasing volume of waste due to population growth. To address this problem, this research develops a mobile application based on Flutter, utilizing YOLOv8 object detection technology to classify organic and inorganic waste. The application aims to simplify household waste sorting, raise public awareness, and support better and more sustainable waste management. The research methodology involves using a dataset of waste images trained with the YOLOv8 algorithm via google colab. The dataset is divided into training (70%), testing (20%), and validation (10%) portions. The model training process is conducted over 25 and 50 epochs, showing improved accuracy with more epochs. At the 50th epoch, the model achieved a precision of 0.81 and a recall of 0.61, demonstrating good performance in detecting and classifying waste. The implementation of this application is expected to facilitate waste sorting, reduce environmental pollution, and improve public health. Recommendations for further development include enhancing detection accuracy, expanding the range of detectable waste types, and optimizing application performance to ensure a better user experience.

Abstract

This paper explores the use of speech acts in the movie, The Road. Speech acts are actions that are performed by human utterances. Speech acts include things like requesting, apologizing, promising, and other utterances that humans do that resemble an action. Based on Searle’s classification of speech acts, there are five classes of speech acts: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declaration. The paper analyzed speech acts in the film’s dialogue and classify them into Searle's speech acts theory. The paper shows most of the speech acts categories are included in The Road’s dialogue except for declaration. The analysis shows that the movie includes most of these types: characters make statements and give information (assertive), give commands, warning, ask questions (Directive), express emotions and feelings (expressive), and make promises, threats and vow (commissive). The absence of declaration in the movie happens because the setting of the movie is in a post-apocalyptic world where there is no authority figure that can make change to the world, making the speech act of declaration is almost impossible. Overall, the study reveals the function and the importance of speech acts in movie dialogue.

Abstract

Every student of the Software Engineering Technology study program, the Computer and Informatics Department of the Politeknik Negeri Medan in the lecture process is required to take all the courses in the curriculum. From the courses in the curriculum, there are several subject groups that shape student expertise, such as Software Engineering, System Analyst, Database Administrator, and IT Entrepreneur. It is hoped that this expertise will later be used as a reference by students in carrying out their thesis at the end of lectures. The purpose of this study is to group students based on their respective expertise based on data processing of student course scores related to each skill. The data used is data on student scores for batches of 2020 and 2021 with a range of courses from semester 1 to semester 3. The data is tested by implementing the K-Means algorithm. The results of the tests that have been carried out show the grouping of students based on their expertise, with 7 times the number of iterations. Then, data testing was carried out with the RapidMiner application to get the results of the distribution of cluster members obtained, including 12 students occupying Software Engineer skills, 21 students with System Analyst skills, 5 students with Database Administrator skills, and 31 students with IT Entrepreneur skills, along with the distribution chart. Thus, the K-Means algorithm is quite good at grouping students based on their expertise

Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in a nation's development and civilization. However, regions categorized as underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) in Indonesia face significant challenges in providing quality education, including Arabic language learning. Arabic, as the language of the Qur'an and a key reference in Islamic teachings, is essential for students seeking a deeper understanding of religious texts. Nevertheless, Arabic learning in 3T areas is hindered by linguistic and non-linguistic factors, such as difficulties in grammar and pronunciation, low student motivation, inadequate learning facilities, and ineffective teaching methods. This study employs a literature review method, analyzing various academic sources to explore the challenges and potential solutions for Arabic language learning in 3T regions. The research highlights that the use of innovative educational media significantly enhances students' motivation and comprehension. However, implementing digitalbased learning tools remains a challenge due to limited internet access, lack of technological infrastructure, and insufficient teacher training. To address these challenges, this study proposes several solutions, including improving infrastructure, integrating local cultural resources into the curriculum, and providing teacher training programs on innovative teaching methods. Game-based learning, such as Arabic Monopoly, flashcards, and interactive storytelling, has proven effective in increasing student engagement. Additionally, traditional games like spinning tops (gasing) and congklak, adapted to Arabic language learning, can serve as culturally relevant teaching tools. The findings emphasize the need for collaborative efforts among educators, policymakers, and institutions to support Arabic language education in 3T areas. By combining digital innovations with traditional learning strategies, a more inclusive and effective learning environment can be established. This research contributes to developing sustainable and context-appropriate Arabic language learning strategies, ensuring equitable education opportunities in remote regions.

Abstract

Background:  Kalimantan remains malaria-endemic, particularly in rural areas, where prevention efforts face challenges such as insecticide resistance and limited healthcare access. Despite available measures like insecticide-treated nets, gaps in understanding individual and household prevention practices persist, especially in relation to demographics and effectiveness in reducing malaria transmission.Purpose: This study aimed to examine the individual and household-level malaria prevention strategies utilized in rural Kalimantan and evaluate their effectiveness in reducing malaria incidence. Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of the 2018 Indonesian basic health research (Riskesdas). A total of 67,155 respondents in Kalimantan were analyzed including respondent characteristics, memories of malaria infection, and individual and household malaria prevention efforts. The data were collected through the result of the 2018 Riskesdas survey. Bivariate regression and multivariable logistic regression were used in data analysis. Results:  Self-reported malaria rates were higher among older respondents compared to younger ones. Women reported lower malaria rates than men, especially in South Kalimantan. In West Kalimantan, the use of bed nets was associated with higher self-reported malaria rates (OR=1.838, 95%CI 1.147–2.943). Short-term use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) showed varying odds across provinces: Central Kalimantan (OR=3.659, 95%CI 1.378–9.717), South Kalimantan (OR=10.811, 95%CI 3.649–32.030), East Kalimantan (OR=2.615, 95%CI 1.041–6.567), and West Kalimantan (OR=2.428, 95%CI 1.446–4.078). In all provinces, preventive measures such as coils or electric mats reduced self-reported malaria cases. The use of mosquito screens was effective in South Kalimantan (OR=0.208, 95%CI 0.027–1.598), Central Kalimantan (OR=0.365, 95%CI 0.120–2.181), and North Kalimantan (OR=0.000, 95%CI 0.000–0.000). The multivariate model highlighted mosquito nets as the most effective household-scale prevention in nearly all Kalimantan provinces except North Kalimantan. Conclusion:  This study showed that individuals aged 25 and over, women, non-farmers, and those using ITNs and other preventive measures, especially in rural areas, were less likely to report malaria, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions from local health authorities.
