Abstract

YouTube has become a lucrative platform for content creators, fostering the rise of popular Muslim scholars with distinct specialties and audiences. This phenomenon has been exploited by creators who commodify religious lectures by framing them as debates, contributing to the growing polarization among Indonesian Muslims. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing the framing analysis model of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki to examine how religious sentiments are constructed and commodified on YouTube. It further explores audience interpretations to assess the impact of such framing. The findings reveal that content creators manipulate frames through strategically designed thumbnails and titles as key syntactic elements, while the sequencing of video clips reinforces framing at the script, thematic, and rhetorical levels. Audience engagement, as reflected in comments, largely demonstrates support for the content creators and the religious figures portrayed as victors in these debates. The study concludes that the commodification of religious sentiments through framing significantly intensifies polarization within the Indonesian Muslim community, posing a considerable threat to social and religious diversity.

Abstract

In various regions of Indonesia, cultural communication disputes are frequent, and the very existence of culture serves as a symbol for preserving that culture. Differences in beliefs are the source of conflict during cultural inculturation at the Saparan Bekakak traditional event; as a result, communication issues need to be resolved for the sake of culture, existence, and sustainability. The Ambarketawang Village, Sleman Regency, residents, and the village government were interviewed, observed, and documented in this descriptive qualitative research method. First, this study found community conflicts over how the Saparan Bekakak traditional event made communicating difficult for people with different cultural beliefs. Second, differences in interpretation of the Saparan Bekakak event make cultural inculturation a problem; third, the non-verbal arguments that arise from the symbols used in the traditional Saparan Bekakak event; fourth, the village government's role as an arbitrator or communicator in resolving Saparan Bekakak-related communication disputes. The disagreement over communication will be resolved, preventing any misinterpretation of meaning and preserving the traditional culture of Saparan Bekakak.

Abstract

This article uses a qualitative type of virtual ethnography method and literature review in obtaining the main data derived from the results of searching, collecting, and processing fifty reputable national and international scientific journals, general and religious-based online news websites, and social media platforms. Indonesian society has lived together in a socio-religious context with an atmosphere of peace, tolerance in the frame of diversity, and prioritizing the values of religiosity. However, this peace and harmony has turned into conflict, hostility and discrimination triggered by political elites using religion through identity politics and politicization of religion to gain power in elections. The conclusion of this research is that there must be a series of strategies by the government, religious leaders, and plural communities in moderating the digital world and cross-cultural religious literacy based on digitalization in the form of massive and inclusive positive content. Echoing the political narrative of humanity which is the spirit of politics, until finally a soothing social and digital media climate is created without any negative tendencies that become seeds of discrimination and conflict when elections come.

Abstract

Equipping knowledge and developing critical thinking skills about social and economic issues to students is important. This study aimed to analyze the ability of prospective students of Islamic State of Madrasah of Insan Cendekia (ISM-IC) to think critically about socioeconomic problems. This research reveals a critical thinking skills gap among prospective students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah/Islamic Junior High School (IJHS) and non-IJHS who participated in the national selection of new students (NSoNS). This study uses a cross-sectional survey approach with standard instruments from the NSoNS ISM-IC. Data was obtained from 1,832 participants in the social sciences group test, consisting of 1,197 people from IJHS and 635 from non-IJHS. Data analysis using R Programming, package ‘ggstatsplot’, and via Microsoft Excel. The result is: i) a gap in social studies scores between IJHS and non-IJHS students of -0.215, with the social studies scores of IJHS students lower than non-IJHS; ii) critical thinking skills are proven to have a very real impact on the occurrence of social studies score gaps, through the inability of students to answer the higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) category questions. This finding indicates the urgency of the education unit to provide nuanced literacy models and learning and HOTs to increase think of critic ability about socioeconomic matter.

Abstract

This research explores the interaction between academic engagement, gender differences, and future time perspective (FTP) among high school students. The aim is to shed light on how this factor contributes to students’ orientation towards their future. This research used a survey design with a sample of 109 students to examine the prediction of academic engagement to FTP and the moderating role of gender. The findings showed a significant positive prediction of engagement to FTP, which was more pronounced in male students, highlighting the importance of gender as a moderating factor. This research emphasizes the multidimensional nature of engagement—emotional, behavioral, and cognitive—and its essential role in shaping FTP. The impact of the learning environment and teacher-student dynamics on engagement and FTP, which is nuanced by gender differences, is also explored. Based on these insights, the result recommends future research directions, including longitudinal studies, to further understand engagement and FTP developmental trajectories, explore additional moderating factors, and intervene in education supporting gender equity.

Abstract

Halal certification aims to meet specific standards and gain legal recognition for products as per Indonesia's 2014 Halal Product Assurance Law. It represents a social responsibility for producers. Despite administrative registration, violations of halal certification can disrupt public order and are considered criminal offenses. The study uses a normative-empirical method, combining literature reviews and Gustav Radbruch's legal theory. Results show that mandatory halal certification under the Job Creation Law has raised awareness about halal consumption, especially among entrepreneurs. However, procedural obstacles like insufficient review and delays persist. The law has provided legal certainty and consumer rights protection. To improve halal certification services, uniform education from the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) is recommended, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM).

Abstract

The development of education, particularly in Islamic Religious Education (PAI), is crucial in shaping individual personalities and strengthening Islamic identity within the community. At public universities (PTUs) like the University of Madura (UNIRA), developing the PAI curriculum is essential to respond to changing times and advancing knowledge. Challenges include integrating Islamic values with modern knowledge, adapting to technological advancements in learning, and enhancing students' understanding of religious education. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method through interviews, observations, and documentation with 20 students and PAI lecturers at UNIRA. Findings reveal several key issues, such as the minimal PAI credit load of only 2 credits, lack of student enthusiasm for PAI subjects, variations in PAI development, and challenges in the quality of teaching staff and a supportive campus environment for religious learning. The development of the PAI curriculum at UNIRA should aim to shape students of character and integrity, capable of positively contributing to society. Innovations in teaching methods, strengthening collaboration with Islamic institutions and academics, and industry cooperation are opportunities to explore. This implementation aims to make PAI relevant to modern life needs and equip students to face changing times.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a game-based assessment instrument in science learning in Islamic Elementary Schools, which can measure students' high-level thinking skills (HOTS). The instrument is designed to create an interactive and engaging learning experience for students, as well as integrate science concepts with Islamic values. The development model used is ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), with trials carried out in grades 4-6 in several Islamic Elementary Schools. The results show that game-based assessment instruments successfully increase student engagement in learning, as well as be effective in measuring critical, creative, and analytical thinking skills. In addition, this instrument has also been proven to enrich students' understanding of the science studied, as well as strengthen relevant Islamic values. The application of this assessment instrument is expected to improve student learning outcomes in the field of science and help develop higher-order thinking skills.
