Abstract

This study aims to examine the nature of pest attacks and the status of trees as living entities within the ecosystem of the Mataram Urban Forest through an ontological perspective. A qualitative–philosophical approach with a conceptual–exploratory design was employed, integrating systematic literature analysis and field observations across ten observation points. The findings reveal damage to leaves, stems, and fruits in several tree species—including mahogany, rain tree, and acacia—which indicates weakened ecological relations between trees and their surrounding environment. Pest occurrences were not merely biological disturbances but functioned as existential markers that signal systemic ecological disharmony resulting from environmental pressures such as high daytime temperatures, low humidity, and moderate vegetation structure. The ontological modeling identified five key interrelated entities—trees, pests, the environment, visitors, and comfort—that collectively shape ecosystem health through relational balance. This study concludes that ecosystem health is driven not by the mere absence of pests but by the quality of interactions among living entities and their ecological context. The ontological approach presented here offers a foundation for more holistic and sustainable urban forest management.

Abstract

Abstract

Agroforestry as a sustainable land use system not only represents ecological practices but also reflects the worldview and values of local communities. This study aims to explore agroforestry practices in the Wanagiri social forestry area/HKm in Sumbawa Regency from an ontological perspective, by examining the community's view of the relationship between humans, plants, and the environment. Qualitative methods were used through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with farmers and traditional leaders. The results of the study indicate that agroforestry practices in the Wanagiri social forestry/HKm area in Sumbawa Regency are rooted in the local knowledge system of the Balinese community, which has been passed down from their region of origin. The Balinese ethnic group in the Wanagiri social forestry area/HKm are migrants from Karangasem who arrived in 1985 through a transmigration program. In managing the forest in the Wanagiri social forestry area/HKm, the Balinese community emphasizes harmony between humans and nature. The ontological perspective of the local community reflects a strong relationality, where trees and land are not merely seen as resources but as integral parts of social and spiritual life. This finding indicates the importance of considering ontological frameworks in the development of sustainable and contextual agroforestry policies.

Abstract

Kata kunci: agroforestri; ontologi relasional; novelty konseptual; sistem sosio-ekologis; tambora Relational Ontology of Agroforestry in Tambora: A Literature Review of Human–Plant–Ecosystem Relations Abstract Agroforestry in the Tambora region is generally understood as a system of production and conservation, while the ontological dimension of human–plant–ecosystem relations is still rarely examined explicitly. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing Tambora agroforestry through the lens of relational ontology, so that agroforestry is understood as a co-constitutive socio-ecological system. The study employs a qualitative literature review with a thematic analysis framework, based on reputable international and national scholarly articles that were systematically selected from Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Taylor & Francis. The synthesis indicates that Tambora agroforestry forms reciprocal relations among humans, plants, and volcanic ecosystems that cannot be separated into sectoral domains. In the socio-cultural dimension, plants function as media for the transmission of knowledge and community identity; in the ecological dimension, species diversity and multi-strata vegetation structure enhance landscape resilience; in the economic dimension, crop diversification strengthens livelihood security; while in the ontological dimension, agroforestry is understood as a space of co-being, in which humans and nature mutually constitute one another. The novelty of this study lies in the explicit integration of a relational ontology approach into agroforestry research grounded in the local Tambora context, moving beyond conventional technical-economic analyses. This review offers a conceptual contribution to the development of agroforestry studies and provides an alternative foundation for policymaking and sustainable landscape management that is more context-sensitive.

Abstract

The integration of livestock-food crops and horticulture is a strategic approach in realizing a sustainable agricultural system, especially in irrigated areas such as the Batu Bulan irrigation in Sumbawa Regency. This system not only increases resource efficiency through the utilization of crop waste as animal feed, the use of organic fertilizer from feces, and the planting of legumes to improve soil fertility, but also has the potential to be developed into agro-edutourism that can increase farmers' income. This study aims to analyze the potential of integration from the perspective of ontology, epistemology, and axiology, and assess its relevance as a basis for developing sustainable agro-edutourism. The method used is a systematic narrative review of international literature (2015-2024) covering the themes of agriculture-livestock integration, agro-edutourism, sustainability, and the philosophy of science. The results of the study indicate that livestock-crop integration has an ontological basis as an integrated agroecological system, an epistemological basis through scientific and local knowledge, and an axiological basis as a source of economic, educational, and ecological value. The development of integrated agro-educational tourism in the Batu Bulan irrigation system has the potential to increase farmer incomes, improve soil health, and strengthen local food security. With institutional support, technology, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, this model can become a viable and valuable strategy for sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract

The Integrated Agricultural System (SPT) is a strategic approach in dryland development, as it is able to respond to various biophysical constraints such as water limitations, low soil fertility, and production fluctuations. In the Batu Lanteh watershed, Sumbawa Regency, the integration of cattle-corn-gamal is a synergistic model that combines the production of food crops, the provision of forage feed, and the use of livestock waste as a source of organic fertilizer. Various studies show that plant-livestock-tree integration can increase corn productivity, improve soil quality, increase land use efficiency, and strengthen the economic resilience of farmer households (Irawan et al., 2024; Panjaitan et al., 2019). This study analyzes the integration system from an epistemological perspective, especially in looking at the relationship between farmers' local knowledge and scientific knowledge developed through research and program interventions. The results of the review show that there is an epistemological tension between local knowledge that is empirical-contextual and scientific knowledge that is procedural-generalizing. However, the integration of the two is possible through a hybrid epistemology that emphasizes co-creation of knowledge, dual validation, and farmer participation in the innovation process. The conclusion of the study emphasizes that the success of cattle-corn-gamal integration is largely determined by the harmonization between local and scientific perspectives, so that this epistemological approach becomes the basis for the formulation of a more adaptive, participatory, and sustainable dryland agricultural policy in Sumbawa Regency.

Abstract

Ontological, Epistemological, and Axiological Analysis with a Case Study of Mataram City Forest Abstract Early detection of pest attacks is essential for maintaining the ecological performance and social comfort of urban forests. This study integrates philosophical perspectives—ontology, epistemology, and axiology—with empirical evidence to design an early-warning framework for pest detection in the Pagutan Urban Forest, Mataram, Indonesia. A structured literature review was conducted using major academic databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and IEEE Xplore) focusing on studies published between 2023 and 2025. An ontological model was developed to represent key entities such as tree species, pests, symptoms, and environmental parameters, while remote-sensing findings (RDVI/NDVI and UAV imaging) were adapted into a conceptual early-detection scenario applicable to local conditions. Results indicate that multispectral indicators are capable of identifying pre-visual stress with high accuracy (>90%). Ontology-based integration also enhances data interoperability and supports decision-making across monitoring systems. Simulated interpretation of empirical findings suggests that 20–30% of trees may face seasonal infestation risk in Pagutan without timely intervention. The proposed framework provides a foundation for continuous monitoring, management prioritization, and assessment of social values associated with maintaining healthy urban trees. Key recommendations include the adoption of multitemporal satellite/UAV monitoring, the development of localized domain ontologies, and community participation as an axiological component of urban-forest stewardship.

Abstract

Local Epistemology and Modern Science: a Critical Philosophy of Science Review of Ecological Knowledge Based on Tambora Local Wisdom Abstract The relationship between local knowledge and modern science has become an increasingly important topic in environmental and sustainability studies. Local ecological knowledge grounded in indigenous and local wisdom is no longer understood merely as cultural practice, but as an epistemic system with its own rationality, contextual validity, and adaptive capacity. This article aims to critically review how local epistemologies are positioned within scientific literature and how they relate to modern science, with a conceptual reflection on the local wisdom of the Tambora region. The study employs a critical narrative literature review of reputable international and national journals addressing local ecological knowledge, epistemology of science, and sustainable environmental management. The review findings indicate that although local knowledge is increasingly acknowledged in environmental governance and resource management practices, it is often incorporated instrumentally and not fully recognized as an autonomous epistemic source equivalent to modern science. Recent literature emphasizes the importance of epistemological pluralism, epistemic justice, and place-based approaches for understanding the complexity of social–ecological systems. In the context of Tambora, local epistemology demonstrates strong potential to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge that is more contextual, relational, and sustainability-oriented. This review contributes to contemporary philosophy of science by reinforcing the legitimacy of local knowledge as an integral component of inclusive and reflexive knowledge production.
