Abstract

This research  aims  to  discover  whether  applying Islamic  videos on YouTube  might increase junior high school students' English vocabulary mastery. This research used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design and a questionnaire. The study population was 40 grade 8 students at SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar, South Sulawesi, in the 2021–2022 academic year. The respondents were recruited using a random sampling technique. The research instruments were a vocabulary test administered as a post-test and a pre-test, and a questionnaire. In analyzing  the data,  descriptive  statistics  was  used.  The  post-test  mean  score  was 84.5455; which shows that the post-test mean score was more significant than the pre- test mean score (68.6364). Of the percentage of students’ perceptions while using Islamic videos on YouTube, 85% answered yes, and only 15% answered no. Furthermore, the value of this study (0.001) was lower than the alpha level (0.05). These mean that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. Consequently, Islamic videos on YouTube could be used as medium to improve the students' English vocabulary mastery in grade 8 of SMP IT Nurul Fikri Makassar.

Abstract

This research was a qualitative study using a case study approach. It aimed to find out: (1) the strategies used by the English department students in online learning; and (2) the students’ reasons for choosing the learning strategies in online learning. The instruments used were a questionnaire and an interview. A purposive sampling method was employed to select the participants, and 52 participants were chosen for this study. The results show that most students employ the same strategies for the environment-structuring aspect, as they always make sure that the conditions in which they are having an online lecture are conducive and comfortable enough to support their learning. From the result of the interview, the reasons the students use the strategies for each aspect are that (1) setting goals motivates students to learn and can be guidance in achieving good academic results; (2) a conducive learning environment supports online learning; (3) well-prepared students readiness in learning; (4) managing time is needed due to a lack of time in online classes; (5) seeking help to get a deeper understanding of the materials or instructions; and (6) evaluation helps to find out students lacks and needs in online learning.

The results of this study, the mean score of students' pretest and posttest was increased (64.80 to 86.05). The standard deviation score for the pretest (17.59) and posttest (9.53), showed that the standard deviation of the posttest was smaller than the standard deviation of the pretest. The result of statistical hypothesis testing by using sample t-test found that (Sig < α (0.05)), Therefore, Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted, which means that the use of the Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) can improve students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to ascertain how users think about Hallo (https://www.hallo.ai), a free artificial intelligence (AI) application (app) that enables users to interact with AI teachers to learn languages. Hallo has become increasingly popular among EFL students worldwide as a platform for practicing English. In conducting this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method and collected the data using in-depth interviews with twenty Hallo users from Indonesia who were chosen using a purposive sampling technique. Findings from the data analysis showed that Hallo contributes to the users' increased ability and confidence in speaking English. With Hallo, users can communicate anonymously, get a lot of exposure to others, connect with people who share their goals and are on the same level as them, and come across supportive individuals. Users see English-speaking ability as influenced by two of the indicators of speaking skills: accuracy and fluency. This is because users engage in worldwide online EFL speaking practice with strangers or foreigners and are sensitive to cultural variations. Users impart accurate knowledge, pay less attention to grammar, develop pronunciation, and increase their vocabulary. Users are exposed to interlocutors frequently, their proficiency has an impact on users, users are under the influence of external forces, and users experience issues with their internet connections. In conclusion, users generally had positive perceptions of Hallo's contributions to their improved English-speaking proficiency and confidence. As a result, Hallo could be a fantastic tool for EFL learners to practice speaking.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the dominant learning styles among eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Makassar. A descriptive quantitative research design was used, with data collected through a learning style questionnaire and a speaking performance test. A purposive sample of 30 students participated in the study. The findings show that the auditory learning style was the most preferred, chosen by 14 students (47%), followed by the visual learning style (10 students or 33%) and the kinesthetic learning style (6 students or 20%). These findings suggest that students' learning styles influence their speaking performance and highlight the importance of using varied teaching strategies to support learners with different preferences.

Abstract

This study aims to explore participants’ anxiety in speaking at the EZPZ English Community. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects consisted of 22 individuals, referred to as ‘participants,’ who participated in speaking sessions during FEZ activities. Data collection techniques included observation and interviews. The findings revealed two types of symptoms: psychological symptoms (nervousness, worry, difficulty concentrating, and blanking) and physiological symptoms (object touching, trembling, sweating, stammering, and avoiding eye contact). The participants experienced state anxiety and situation-specific anxiety. The contributing factors of anxiety were categorized into linguistic factors (lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, lack of fluency, and limited exposure to the target language) and non-linguistic factors (communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation). To overcome anxiety, participants employed four common strategies: preparation, positive thinking, relaxation, and peer seeking, along with a newly uncovered strategy called 'calm retreat.' This study highlights that speaking anxiety is a critical concern not only in formal educational institutions but also in non-formal learning environments. Addressing this issue requires implementing suitable strategies that accommodate individual needs to help learners overcome the barriers preventing them from expressing their opinions.

Abstract

This study aims to identify relevant and interesting English teaching materials for elementary school students and analyze their impact on students' motivation and learning outcomes. This study employs a qualitative and quantitative method (mixed method) with participants consisting of the fifth-grade students at SDN 2 Sawerigadi. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires and were analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that the use of relevant and interesting teaching materials positively contributes to students' motivation in learning. The implemented strategies of developing teaching materials include the use of visual media, interactive learning methods, the selection of themes relevant to students' daily lives, and the adaptation to different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The positive impact is evident in the increase in students' learning motivation, as reflected in their active participation in class and improved learning outcomes. Questionnaire data show that after using the developed teaching materials, most students experienced better comprehension and academic progress. Therefore, it can be concluded that relevant and interesting teaching materials can enhance elementary school students' motivation and learning outcomes in English language learning.
