Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities based on their levels of self-efficacy using the IDEAL Problem Solving steps. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted at SMPN 1 Pademawu with five purposively selected students representing very high to very low self-efficacy categories. The instruments used included a self-efficacy questionnaire, problem-solving tests, and interviews. The results show that higher self-efficacy is associated with better performance in understanding problems, selecting strategies, performing calculations, and evaluating solutions, while students with low self-efficacy experience difficulties in nearly all IDEAL stages.

Abstract

This study aimed to design, develop, and feasibility test of selected capita book of mathematics based on meaningful learning for prospective mathematics teachers. This research was a Research and Development (R&D). The development model in this study was Four-D model by Thiagarajan, Semmel and Semmel. The stages in this development were define, design, develop and disseminate. The subjects of this study were prospective 6th semester mathematics teacher at STKIP PGRI Bangkalan, East Java, Indonesia. This study used validity, practicality and effectiveness tests. The instruments in this study included validation sheets, lecturer and prospective mathematics teacher response questionnaires, observation sheets on lecturer' abilities in managing learning, observation sheets on prospective mathematics teacher activities, and test questions. The analysis technique in this study used descriptive statistics in the form of averages and percentages. The results of development of selected capita book of mathematics based on meaningful learning met valid, practical and effective categories. This book was a pedagogical tool that supports prospective mathematics teachers in building connections between mathematical concepts and their applications in learning contexts.

Abstract

Computational thinking skills among junior high school students generally remain low, while teachers seldom combine digital learning media with local culture in mathematics lessons. An ethnomathematics-based Scratch medium offers one way to close this gap, since it makes mathematics learning more contextual, engaging, and meaningful. This study set out to build such a medium and examine whether it meets standards of validity, practicality, and effectiveness for strengthening students' computational thinking. A research and development (R&D) design was applied, following the five ADDIE stages analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation with eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pragaan as participants. Data were gathered through a validation sheet, response questionnaires from teachers and students, and pretest-posttest scores, then examined descriptively alongside the N-Gain formula. The resulting media obtained a validity score of 80%-85.5% (valid), a practicality score of 75% (fairly practical), and an N-Gain of 69% in the experimental class versus 33% in the control class (fairly effective). Overall, these results suggest that ethnomathematics-based Scratch media can support junior high school students in building stronger computational thinking skills.

Abstract

Mathematics is often considered difficult because the material taught is not closely connected to students’ daily-life. Ethnomathematics offers an alternative approach by linking mathematical concept with local culture. Meanwhile, digital technology enables content delivery more interactively and engagingly. This research aims to develop an ethno-digital learning toll that is valid, practical, and effective ini improving student learning outcomes at SMP Negeri 1 Pamekasan. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The developed device integrates local cultural elements with digital media to create contextual and meaningful learning. The research instruments include validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The validation results indicated that the device is highly valid and user-friendly, and it received positive feedback. The significant improvement in student learning outcomes in the experimental class shows that the device is suitable for use in the mathematics education. Abstract

Teacher intervention is an action taken by teachers to guide students in reviewing their understanding. Comprehensive teacher intervention helps improve students’ mathematical understanding by providing appropriate support throughout the learning process. This study aims to describe teacher intervention in mathematics learning on algebraic expressions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design involving eight mathematics teachers from eight junior high schools in Pamekasan during the preliminary observation. Based on the initial observations, three teachers were selected as the research participants. The study was conducted over three months. Data were collected through classroom observations, documentation, and transcripts of mathematics lessons. Data were analyzed using the Pirie–Kieren theory, with its eight layers of understanding serving as the analytical framework for examining teacher intervention. The findings show that the teachers primarily used convergent and probing follow-up questions to explore students’ thinking. These interventions mainly supported students’ understanding at the Structuring layer, where students began reorganizing their mathematical knowledge more systematically. However, interventions that facilitated students’ progression to higher levels of understanding, particularly the Inventising layer, were not identified during the observed lessons. These findings indicate that teacher interventions remained focused on strengthening procedural and structural understanding rather than fostering students’ ability to construct new mathematical ideas independently. Therefore, more varied, exploratory, reflective, and conceptually oriented interventions are needed to promote deeper mathematical understanding. The findings also highlight the importance of professional development programs that support teachers in designing learning environments that encourage reasoning, justification, and mathematical generalization, as well as sustained reflective teaching practices to continuously improve the quality of mathematics instruction. Keywords: Teacher intervention, Algebraic expression, Mathematical understanding.
