Abstract

Political speeches function not only as formal addresses but also as powerful tools for constructing ideological narratives, legitimizing authority, and influencing public opinion. In a politically polarized and socially diverse country like Indonesia, presidential discourse plays a crucial role in uniting disparate groups and articulating visions for national development and reform. This study critically examines how President Prabowo Subianto frames power and ideology in his 2024 inaugural presidential speech by investigating the linguistic strategies and discursive mechanisms used to construct an image of inclusive leadership, address systemic corruption, and reinforce national identity. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research integrates van Dijk’s theory of power and ideology, Fairclough’s modality theory, Wodak’s critical pragmatics, Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory, and Moscovici's theory of social representation. The primary data consists of the official transcript of Prabowo's speech, retrieved from government sources and analyzed through purposive sampling to identify ideologically salient segments. These were manually coded for modality, speech acts, metaphorical constructions, and group representations. The analysis reveals that Prabowo constructs an assertive yet inclusive leadership persona by using a high-certainty modality to project confidence in achieving national goals, particularly food and energy self-sufficiency. Deontic expressions frame these goals as collective moral obligations. Assertive and commissive speech acts function to inform and mobilize, reinforcing his credibility and political commitment. Conceptual metaphors such as "journey" and "disease" simplify complex challenges, portraying national development as a shared path forward and corruption as a harmful condition requiring urgent cures. Through social representation, the speech elevates "the lower class" (e.g., farmers, fishermen) as national heroes while depicting corrupt elites as threats to societal well-being. These linguistic strategies form a coherent populist narrative that legitimizes reformist leadership and appeals to collective identity. This study contributes to the field of political discourse analysis in Indonesia by offering a comprehensive, multi-theoretical lens to unpack the ideological functions of language in presidential communication. It also holds practical implications for political speechwriting, civic education, and public engagement by demonstrating how language can be used to construct legitimacy, inspire unity, and frame national priorities in morally persuasive ways.

Abstract

Moral learning is a fundamental aspect in Islamic education, especially in Islamic boarding schools. This study aims to examine the implementation of learning the book Syi'ir Ngudi Susilo in shaping the morals of female students towards teachers at the Al Qutub Wonopringgo Pekalongan Islamic Boarding School. This book was chosen because of its relevant content in instilling the values of akhlakul karimah and strengthening the manners of students towards teachers. The research method used was qualitative with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using data reduction, presentation, and verification techniques based on the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results of the study showed that the dominant learning methods used were bandongan and memorization. The bandongan method allows female students to understand the contents of the book directly through the teacher's explanation, while the memorization method helps them internalize the teachings of the book. Although most female students showed an increase in morals towards teachers, there were still obstacles such as being unaccustomed to applying the values taught, academic pressure from schools and boarding schools, and limited communication with teachers. This study confirms that moral education in Islamic boarding schools requires supporting strategies such as more adaptive learning methods, academic and moral balance, and a conducive learning environment. Further research is expected to explore the effectiveness of other methods in increasing the internalization of moral values in the lives of female students.

Abstract

Background: Hate speech targeting religious symbols in digital media has sparked complex legal and social debates. Public figures often disseminate ideological views that may violate religious norms and legal provisions. Aims: This study aims to identify the linguistic forms and pragmatic functions of directive and representative speech acts in Pandji Gumilang’s statements on the Zaytun Official YouTube channel, which were used as evidence in a finalised criminal case. Methods: A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a forensic pragmatic framework based on Searle's speech act theory. Data were drawn from the Indramayu District Court Verdict No. 365/Pid.Sus/2023/PN.Idm using purposive sampling. The analysis focused on speech forms, communicative functions, and violations of Leech's politeness maxims, specifically tact, agreement, modesty, and approbation. Results: The study found 12 speeches containing hate speech against religious symbols, consisting of four directive speeches and eight representative speeches. All data violates the principles of politeness, especially the maxims of wisdom, agreement, humility, and decency. Statements such as "Indonesia is a sacred land", "not the kalam of Allah", and "strange nasab descendants of the Prophet Saw. show the manipulation of language that functions as an ideological means and has a legal impact. Implications: Findings reveal that directive and representative speech acts serve as ideological tools undermining Islamic symbols and provoking legal action. This research highlights the utility of forensic pragmatics in examining how language functions as symbolic power and a medium for religion-based offences.

Abstract

Abstract

In the era of digital information disruption, media, both conventional and digital, significantly shapes political communication and voter behavior through agenda setting, framing, and information dissemination. This study aims to explore how media influences voters’ political perceptions and decisions, while addressing challenges and proposing solutions for effective political communication in the digital age. Employing a qualitative approach with a literature review method, this research analyzes data extracted from various credible sources, including scholarly articles and public media, using content analysis to derive new insights. The findings reveal that media directs public attention and shapes voter preferences, with social media amplifying participation but also exacerbating polarization and disinformation due to algorithmic biases and political buzzers. Media literacy emerges as crucial for fostering critical information analysis, alongside responsible media practices and ethical political campaigns. The study concludes that collaboration among media, politicians, academics, and civil society is essential to maintain journalistic integrity, enhance digital literacy, and ensure transparent regulations, fostering a healthy democratic ecosystem. By addressing these challenges, political communication can support informed voter decisions and strengthen democracy in the digital era.

Abstract

This paper explores the different types of double-object sentences in Indonesian. This study aims to identify the types of double object constructions based on syntactic behavior, word categories of verb-accompanying constituents, and the verb's form at the construction center. Double object constructions in Indonesian can be divided into two types: double object constructions with double FN constituents (type 1) and double object constructions with combined FN constituents (type 2). The difference between the two types is seen in verb form, syntactic behavior, and the category of verb-accompanying constituents. In terms of verb form, type 1 constructions have verbs ending in -kan and -i, while type 2 does not. In terms of syntactic behavior, type 1 constructions come from single sentences. They can be fixed into other forms by changing the verb and using prepositions "for" and "to" as adverbial function markers in the last constituent. In contrast, type 2 constructions come from broader sentences, so their verb-accompanying constituents form a construction. In terms of the verb-accompanying constituent filler category, type 1 double object constructions only involve nouns as the second filler of the verb-accompanying constituent. In contrast, in type 2 double object constructions, the categories can be nouns, nouns with verbs, adjectives with adjectives, and prepositional phrases.
