Abstract

Abstract

This research describes the integration of religion and science from the perspective of M. Naquib Al-Attas. The aim of this research is to understand the biography of M. Naquib al-Attas, al-Attas's religious and scientific thinking, al-Attas' methodology for integrating religion and science and the Islamization of al-Attas' knowledge. The study method used is literature study or library research by collecting various information from journals/literature related to the Integration of Religion and Science in the Perspective of M. Naquib Al-Attas. Data collection with the results of previous research which support the data in this research. The result is that Al-Attas stated that there is an incompatibility between modern western science and technology and the Islamic system of epistemology and metaphysics. This is because science does not involve the role of God the Khaliq who has created natural laws, so science tends to conflict with religion. Since the 1970s Al-Attas began to introduce the concept of Islamization of science. Islamization as echoed by al-Attas is a term that brings something into Islam or makes it and makes it Islamic in accordance with the spirit of Islamic epistemology as a step or an effort to understand everything within an Islamic framework.

Abstract

This study reconstructs the history of Islamic education during the Umayyad Dynasty by highlighting the pivotal roles of scholars and early knowledge institutions in shaping the foundations of classical Islamic educational traditions. Employing a qualitative historical approach, the research draws upon primary sources such as Tarikh al-Ṭabari and Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, complemented by contemporary academic literature. The findings reveal that scholars such as Hasan al-Basri and Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri served as teachers, jurists, and codifiers of hadith through halaqah-based learning, mosque circles, and scholarly travel (rihlah ilmiyyah). Educational institutions including mosques, scholarly circles, and early libraries played a crucial role in transmitting knowledge and developing networks of learning grounded in sanad. The curriculum centered on the Qur’an, hadith, fiqh, and the Arabic language, delivered through memorization, oral transmission, and dialogical methods. The study affirms that the Umayyad era laid an essential intellectual foundation for the more structured educational system that emerged under the Abbasid Caliphate and marked the initial phase of interaction between religious and rational sciences. Further comparative research is recommended to examine the intellectual continuity between the Umayyad and Abbasid periods.

Abstract

This study examines the revitalization of Islamic education through the concept of the Tawhid paradigm proposed by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. Using a library research method, the study explores five principles of unity: God, creation, truth and knowledge, life, and humanity, as an integrative framework between revelation and reason. The findings indicate that the Tawhid paradigm serves as both an epistemological and axiological foundation for reconstructing Islamic education to overcome the dichotomy between religious and scientific knowledge. Through the Islamization of knowledge project, al-Faruqi proposes twelve strategic steps for educational reform, including mastery of modern sciences, reexamination of classical heritage, development of an integrative curriculum, and research methodologies based on divine revelation. This approach fosters learners who are balanced intellectually, spiritually, and morally. The revitalization of Islamic education based on the Tawhid paradigm aims to restore the unity of knowledge and faith, shaping a generation of ulul albab capable of integrating scientific rationality with ethical and spiritual awareness in facing the challenges of modernity.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas's thoughts on the integration of religion and science and its relevance to the development of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in the modern era. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review approach, with primary sources in the form of al-Attas' works, such as Islam and Secularism and Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam, as well as secondary sources in the form of related journal articles and books. The results of the study show that al-Attas emphasizes three main concepts in the integration of science, namely the Islamization of science, the Islamic worldview as an epistemological foundation, and the importance of adab and ta’dib in education. Further discussion reveals that al-Attas's thoughts are able to offer a critical Islamic epistemological reconstruction of secularism and scientism, while providing a new direction for the PAI curriculum and learning strategies. The conclusion of the study affirms that al-Attas' paradigm is relevant for building holistic Islamic education, integrating the intellectual, moral, and spiritual aspects of students, and opening opportunities for further research in the field of curriculum and integrative learning practices

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of the integration of religion and science from Nidhal Guessoum’s perspective, with a particular focus on its epistemological dimension and its relevance to the development of contemporary Islamic education. The study is motivated by the limited number of works that examine in depth the epistemological aspects of Guessoum’s integrative paradigm, while discourse on the integration of knowledge in the Muslim world has largely been dominated by normative approaches such as the Islamization of knowledge. This research employs a library research method with source triangulation and a descriptive-analytical approach through an examination of Guessoum’s major works and relevant scholarly literature. The findings indicate that the paradigm of knowledge integration he proposes is grounded in three main principles: the non-contradiction between revelation and science, layered interpretation, and theistic falsification. This approach rejects rigid models of i‘jaz al-Qur’an and the Islamization of knowledge, while emphasizing a rational dialogue between religion and science. This study contributes theoretically to the strengthening of Islamic epistemology and offers practical implications for the development of Islamic education that is scientific, contextual, and open to scientific advancement.
