Abstract

Introduction: Indonesia has the third-highest infant mortality rate in ASEAN. One of the causes is that infants are not given colostrum (containing antibodies), making them susceptible to infections such as pneumonia and diarrhea, which are the biggest contributors to mortality. Mothers who did not give colostrum often lacked sufficient information to influence their intention to give colostrum. This study aimed to determine the effect of education about colostrum in third-trimester pregnant women on mothers' intention to give colostrum. Method: The pre-experimental study used a one-group pre-posttest design with a sample size of 37 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed by Mc. Nemar Test. Result: the results of respondents whose intention to give colostrum before education was 48.6% and after education was 97.3%. Statistical tests showed ρ value = 0.000 < α = 0.05, so there was a significant difference between the intention to give colostrum before and after the intervention. Discussion: This shows that there is an effect of education about colostrum in third-trimester pregnant women on the mother's intention to give colostrum.

Abstract

The prevalence of the problem of excess body mass index of adolescents with obesity category has increased worldwide over the past few decades including in Indonesia. Adolescent girls who consume sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) with a frequency ≥ 1-6 times per week, and 81% do light physical activity. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between SSB consumption and physical activity with BMI in adolescent girls. Analytical research with a Cross-Sectional approach. Sampling was done by Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling, a sample of 90 adolescent girls at MAN 1 Kediri City. Data were collected using the BEVQ-15 and GPAQ questionnaires and analyzed with the Spearman Rank Test. Statistical tests showed p value = 0.000 < α (0.05) for the relationship between SSB consumption with BMI and p value = 0.005 < α (0.05) for the relationship between physical activity with BMI. SSB consumption and physical activity are associated with BMI. It is expected that young women maintain a normal body mass index by limiting the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, balancing the intake needs of nutrients in the body, and increasing physical activity.

Abstract

The success of exclusive breastfeeding is an important goal that is influenced by various factors, one of which is the psychological condition of the mother. A crucial factor in this case is the level of self-confidence of the mother in her ability to provide exclusive breastfeeding, which is scientifically known as Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy (BSE). A high level of BSE reflects the mother's confidence to overcome the challenges of breastfeeding and successfully provide only breast milk for the first six months of the baby's life. To examine the relationship between this self-confidence and breastfeeding practices, an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. This study involved 30 breastfeeding mothers who were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Data collection used the Breastfeeding Self Efficacy Scale Short Form (BSES-SF) instrument and supporting questionnaires. The results of statistical analysis using the Spearman rank test showed a statistically significant relationship (p = 0.048). These findings confirm that the higher the level of breastfeeding self-efficacy of a mother, the greater the probability of her success in providing exclusive breastfeeding. Thus, BSE has been shown to play a fundamental role and is an important predictor of the actions and success of mothers in breastfeeding exclusively.
