Abstract

Mathematics learning anxiety is a prevalent issue among high school students that can adversely affect academic performance and psychological well-being. Despite extensive quantitative research, little is known about the lived experiences and psychospiritual dimensions of students facing mathematics anxiety, particularly within Islamic educational settings. This qualitative case study explores the determinants of mathematics learning anxiety among students at Senior High School (SMA) Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Participants were purposively selected based on active enrollment, observable signs of mathematics anxiety, and willingness to provide informed consent. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed thematically. Findings indicate that students experience psychosomatic symptoms, cognitive difficulties, altered learning behavior, and neurophysiological disturbances. Contributing factors include low self-efficacy, poor concentration, fear of failure, and the perception of mathematics as inherently difficult. Anxiety manifested during lessons and assessments, negatively influencing problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and overall academic achievement. This study highlights the need for holistic support strategies in schools that address both psychological and psychospiritual well-being, integrating educational and Islamic principles to reduce mathematics learning anxiety and enhance student outcomes.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical phase in identity formation, which is strongly influenced by interpersonal interactions, including relationships with parents. The absence of a father figure can lead to emotional and social voids in adolescents, often resulting in feelings of worthlessness and the emergence of insecure behaviour. To evaluate the effectiveness of expressive writing in group counselling for reducing insecure behaviour among fatherless students in Grade 10 Computer and Network Engineering students at SMK Mandiri. This research employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental one-group Pre-Test and post-test design and a purposive sampling technique. A total of 8 fatherless students who exhibited high levels of insecurity were selected as participants. Data were collected using validated fatherless and insecure behaviour scales. The results of the study, based on the paired sample t-test analysis, showed a significant value for Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05. These findings indicate that the expressive writing technique in group counselling is effective in reducing insecure behaviour among fatherless students.

Abstract

The attitude of seniority among students in junior high schools (SMP) is a form of dysfunctional social relations that can disrupt an inclusive and healthy learning climate. This study aims to test the effectiveness of group counselling services using reframing techniques to reduce seniority attitudes among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Silangkitang. The approach used is quantitative with a one-group pretest-posttest design. A sample of 9 students was purposively selected based on indications of seniority behaviour. The intervention was conducted over five sessions of group counselling that integrated reframing techniques to reshape participants' mindsets regarding the meaning of social leadership in the school context. The data collection instrument is a Likert scale questionnaire that measures the dimensions of social dominance, symbolic intimidation, and recognition of class status. Data analysis uses the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test due to non-normal data distribution. The results show a significant decrease in seniority attitude scores, from a pretest average of 99.89 to 50.89 in the posttest, with a significance value (p) = 0.004 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that reframing techniques are effective in helping students to reinterpret their social roles more constructively, thereby reducing dominant behaviour towards other students. This research contributes to developing educational counselling services as a preventive and curative strategy in building an equal, empathetic, and supportive school climate.

Abstract

Academic critical thinking is a crucial competence for university students; however, many still face difficulties in analytical reasoning, evaluative judgment, and reflective thinking due to irrational beliefs and affective barriers. This study aimed to develop and test the effectiveness of a cognitive restructuring counseling model to enhance students’ academic critical thinking. The study employed a research and development approach with mixed methods, involving n = 30 students, and utilized a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The model was validated by experts, yielding a high feasibility score (M = 4.36; 87.2%). Statistical analysis using a paired-sample t-test revealed a significant improvement in academic critical thinking scores from pretest (M = 61.36) to posttest (M = 80.46), t(29) = XX.XX, p < .05, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.10). The greatest improvement was observed in metacognitive reflection. These findings indicate that the model effectively promotes rational, reflective, and open thinking patterns by addressing cognitive distortions and affective barriers. The novelty of this study lies in integrating cognitive restructuring counseling with academic critical thinking development within a structured and validated framework, particularly in the context of Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Low self-esteem remains a common issue among senior high school students, as reflected in low self-confidence, pessimistic attitudes, and difficulties in expressing themselves. These conditions may hinder students’ personal and social development, highlighting the need for innovative guidance and counseling media. This study aimed to develop a bingo-based educational game as a medium for stimulating students’ self-esteem through group counseling services. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model, consisting of the define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The research subjects included material experts, media experts, guidance and counseling teachers, and eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Berastagi. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed quantitatively through descriptive percentage techniques to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the developed media. The findings revealed that the bingo game media achieved a feasibility score of 96.42%, indicating a “highly feasible” category. In addition, teacher and student responses reached 94.94%, categorized as “strongly agree.” These results demonstrate that the developed bingo game is highly appropriate and well accepted as a medium for stimulating students’ self-esteem within guidance and counseling services.

Abstract

Career understanding is one of the important aspects that need to be developed since elementary school. However, career guidance services in schools still tend to use lecture methods so that student involvement in understanding various types of work is not optimal. This research aims to develop group-based Fishing Challenge game media as a guidance and counseling service medium to strengthen the career understanding of elementary school students. The research uses the Research and Development method with a 4D model that is limited to the development stage . The research subjects consisted of one media expert, one material expert, one teacher, and 26 students in class V-A SD Al-Mukmin. Data collection techniques use observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed using a percentage descriptive technique. The results of the study showed that the analysis of media needs obtained a percentage of 93.08% with the category of being urgently needed. The results of the validation of media experts before the revision obtained a percentage of 74.2%, and after being reviewed, the results obtained a percentage of 100% and the validation of material experts obtained a percentage of 92.8% with a very feasible category. The results of the teacher's response obtained a percentage of 100% and the student's response obtained a percentage of 95.23% with the category of very practical. Thus, group-based Fishing Challenge game media is declared feasible and practical to be used in career guidance services in elementary schools. These findings show that interactive game media can be an innovative alternative to support strengthening students' career understanding from an early age.

Data collection techniques were conducted through interviews and questionnaires. The research instruments included media expert validation questionnaires, material expert validation questionnaires, teacher response questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the Archery game media obtained a validity percentage of 90% from media experts with a very valid category and 94% from material experts with a very valid category. The practicality test results obtained a percentage of 96% based on the guidance and counseling teacher’s response and 88.44% based on students’ responses, both in the very practical category. This game media helps students become more active in participating in guidance services, increases their courage in expressing thoughts and feelings, and creates an interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Therefore, the Archery game media is suitable for use in classical guidance services to train students’ self-disclosure.
