Abstract

The study of politeness in education setting interaction has increased in last decades. However, the investigation of politeness strategies in lecturer-student interaction using WhatsApp is relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to explore politeness strategies used by a lecturer and students in virtual communication using WhatsApp during thesis consultation. The researcher applied a mixed method: qualitative and quantitative research to discover the politeness phenomena in WhatsApp interaction. The participants of the study were 10 undergraduate students of English Department, University of HKBP Nommensen, and a lecturer as their thesis consultant. The data of the study consist of 50 screenshots of WhatsApp chats thesis consultation. The results show that all four types of politeness strategies were found in lecture-students interaction. The politeness strategies used by the lecturer and students differ greatly. The lecturer dominantly employed bald on-record (30. 93%) with the most imperative sentences realization; on the other hand, the students tend to use positive politeness strategy (23.20%) with the most greetings realization. This demonstrates that lecturers keep their distance when communicating, whereas students attempt to “get closer” during the interaction. The different politeness strategy choices are caused by the different power and social status (position) factors between lecturers and students. The findings of this study also show that the politeness strategies chosen by lecturers and students are not always consistent with previous similar studies.

Abstract

Since the paradigm for teaching reading has shifted from traditional literacy to multimodal literacy, prior research has demonstrated that augmented reality (AR) technology can successfully improve conventional literacy in general language learning. Only a few research, particularly in English for Nurse courses, have examined the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to improve multimodal literacy in ESP learning. The purpose of this study was to determine how AR technology affects nursing students' multimodal literacy in ESP learning and how they communicate with others through a variety of multimodal modalities to improve their multimodal literacy in medical English. Fifty nursing students enrolled in English for Nursing courses participated in the study to share their experiences using this multimodal ESP learning survey to improve their medical English literacy. In the auditory mode, background music and sound effects were used to elicit strong emotions and improve immersive experiences. The results also showed a significant improvement in nursing students' multimodal English literacy skills when the material was created for a location-based augmented reality application. The findings revealed that nursing students used three modes in AR (visual, imaging, and animations). The three modes were used to help viewers comprehend complex material, give them specific ideas, and encourage participation.

Abstract

This program aimed to improve the professional writing competence of MGMP French teachers at SMAN 19 Medan, who face challenges such as errors in tenses, sentence structure, prepositions, and gender agreement in French writing. These difficulties hinder their ability to teach effectively and meet established competency standards. To address this, the program utilizes fiche de travail numérique from the Allez-Écrire website, offering interactive digital worksheets designed to enhance writing skills. The approach includes situation analysis, problem identification, material development, mentoring, and evaluation. Teachers' weaknesses were identified through observations and interviews, followed by implementing fiche de travail numérique with automatic feedback exercises. Evaluations were conducted to measure improvements before and after the program. The results show a significant increase in writing competence: errors in passé composé and imparfait usage decreased by 45%, sentence structure and conjunction errors by 40%, and gender agreement errors by 40%. These findings indicate that digital worksheets are effective in helping teachers correct mistakes, boost confidence, and produce better writing. The program is proven to enhance French writing competence and is recommended to be expanded with more interactive materials and ongoing support for continuous improvement Keywords : Professional competence; Writing; French; Fiche de Travail Numérique; MGMP

Abstract

Proficiency in using a foreign language cannot be separated from mastery of collocation in the target language. Although several previous studies have explored collocations in various forms of oral communication; however, few studies have investigated the context of collocation use and proficiency in collocation use by EFL learners. This study aims to describe the English collocation competence and collocational mistakes of Indonesian (EFL) students. A total number of 50 students from an English education department in Medan, Indonesia, served as the subjects. The research instrument was a 50-item Simple Completion Test that the researchers created themselves. It assessed students' understanding of four different lexical collocations: pure idioms, figurative idioms, free combinations, and restricted collocations. The findings showed that pure idioms were the most difficult for these students, while free combinations posed the fewest number of a challenge. Student performance on restricted collocations and figurative idioms were roughly equal. The student's inconsistent responses often showed a lack of proficiency with English collocations. It is concluded that poor first language transfer is to blame for the collocational errors made by EFL learners. The greatest way to get more proficient at using collocation while avoiding errors that have been identified thus far is to utilize it as frequently as feasible in English.

Abstract

Although there have been a lot of studies on Bloom's taxonomy's use in the evaluation of language learning in Indonesia, there has never been any research on Bloom's taxonomy's use in the training and evaluation content of Indonesian language textbooks in vocational schools. The objectives of this study are to describe the reading material, cognitive level, and relationship between the material and other aspects in forty items of reading material from Indonesian language textbooks for vocational schools. To achieve this goal, this research uses descriptive qualitative research methods with content analysis design using primary data sources from textbooks. The results of this qualitative study using a content analysis design revealed that the choice of reading material topics is very diverse and represents textual genres. The level of cognition is not evenly distributed and is dominated by Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) with a total of 24 questions (60%), and there are even 2 levels of cognition that are not accommodated at all. The findings of this study defined the distribution of the level of understanding of the items in the textbook, which is very useful for Indonesian language teachers and textbook writers to complete the items evenly according to the level of cognition dispersal, ensuring that students' mastery of the subject matter is broad.

Abstract

The current issue in the translation process is the inappropriate choice of technique, which affects the accuracy and acceptability of the translation, as well as the need to identify slang expressions from the source language to the target language to ensure the style aligns with the target language's characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the techniques used to translate slang expressions from English (the source language) into Indonesian (the target language) using the theories of Butkuiviena and Petrulionē (2010), and Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) in the novel To All The Boys I've Loved Before, while also analyzing the linguistic style of the slang translation from English into Indonesian using Joos's theory (1967). The research method employed is qualitative, with document analysis for data collection. Meanwhile, the data analysis method uses thematic analysis. The results show that the most dominant technique used by translators for translating slang expressions is the literal technique. This finding suggests that the literal translation technique is generally capable of accommodating and sufficiently accurate in translating slang expressions in this novel, which features light and casual language use. Given that the novel narrates a simple teenage story, the dominant linguistic style in the translation of slang expressions is casual style. This finding reflects that the novel's style closely resembles the preferred linguistic style of young readers, who tend to be more relaxed, friendly, and open.
