Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of internalization of ethical values in Toba Batak traditional ceremonies through an anthropolinguistic approach. Traditional ceremonies are symbolic spaces where language, ritual actions, and kinship relations interact and represent cultural values. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques involving analysis of ritual texts used in various ceremonies, such as mangulosi, mangarapot, and mangulosi boru. The results show that ethical values such as somba marhula-hula, manat mardongan tubu, and elek marboru are internalized through traditional speech, kinship arrangements, and material symbols used in ceremonial processions. The anthropolinguistic analysis indicates that ritual language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a mechanism for reinforcing social norms passed down through generations. Furthermore, the internalization of ethical values in the younger generation occurs through the repetition of traditional language formulas, the strengthening of the role of Dalihan Na Tolu in the social structure, and direct participation in family ritual processions. This research confirms that Toba Batak traditional ceremonies serve a crucial role as a medium for the reproduction of moral and ethical values, as well as an instrument for preserving cultural identity amidst the tide of modernization. These findings contribute to the development of anthropolinguistic studies and a deeper understanding of the relationship between language, culture, and ethics in Toba Batak society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine tambar kuning, a traditional medicine in the Batak Karo community, as an ecological representation through an ecolinguistic approach. Tambar kuning consists of two main types: kuning melas (hot balm) and kuning mbergeh (cold balm), each used according to bodily conditions and environmental factors. The research was conducted in Gurusinga Village, Karo Regency, using a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and literature study. The findings show that tambar kuning not only functions as a healing agent but also reflects the Karo people's local knowledge in utilizing natural resources. Its composition is based on local flora, selected for their warming or cooling effects. This practice demonstrates a strong interrelation between language, culture, and ecology. Furthermore, the lexical items related to tambar kuning serve as verbal representations of the community's ecological knowledge system. The study concludes that tambar kuning is an intangible cultural heritage containing ecological and linguistic values that should be preserved as part of the collective identity of the Karo people.

Abstract

The Batak Simalungun people have customs that are observed from conception to death, each with its own uniqueness and social values. This study aims to describe the social and ethical values ??in one of the Batak Simalungun traditional wedding processes, namely the Mangalop Bona Unjuk tradition, which is carried out before marriage by asking permission from an uncle or tondong. This tradition is not just a permission, but a form of respect and a manifestation of moral and social values passed down from generation to generation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to explain the meaning of Mangalop Bona Unjuk, collecting data through case studies, including journals, books, and related websites. The results of the study show that this tradition embodies high social and ethical values such as respect, ethics, and family togetherness. In addition, Mangalop Bona Unjuk serves to strengthen kinship ties and secure the blessing of the extended family, ensuring the wedding process proceeds peacefully and joyfully. Thus, the Mangalop Bona Unjuk tradition plays an important role in shaping the character and maintaining the social balance of the Batak Simalungun people.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of Tawar Penggel as a traditional healing system of the Batak Karo community in North Sumatra, in the form of a herbal oil remedy (minak) made from 28 local plant species used to treat bone fractures and musculoskeletal disorders. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation conducted in Suka Julu Village, Karo Regency. The findings indicate that the practice of Tawar Penggel is still actively preserved by the Batak Karo community in Suka Julu Village, Berastagi District, Karo Regency. The practice involves 28 local plant species as the main ingredients in the preparation of minak, including leaves, roots, stems, tubers, sap, and spices. All materials are sourced from the surrounding environment, both from wild-growing plants and those cultivated in a simple manner by the community. This study contributes to the documentation of local wisdom and the development of ecolinguistic studies grounded in tradition and environmental context.
