Abstract

This study addresses the gap between normative Islamic legal perspectives, which deny any prohibition of marriage in certain months, and socio-cultural practices that maintain marriage taboos in Javanese society. It aims to explain how Javanese traditions interpret marriage during the month of Muharram and to identify the factors that drive the negotiation of this taboo. This research is a field study with a qualitative socio-legal approach conducted in Gunungkidul Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten informants, including six individuals who married during Muharram, two marriage guardians, and two officials from the Office of Religious Affairs. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model and interpreted through Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The findings reveal that decisions to marry during Muharram are influenced by practical family considerations, religious understanding, and institutional legitimacy. These factors indicate that the Muharram marriage taboo has not disappeared but has been reinterpreted as a negotiable cultural practice. Theoretically, this study contributes to Islamic family law by demonstrating that legal norms interact dynamically with social and cultural systems, in which local traditions may function as ‘urf that is continuously negotiated within the framework of Islamic law. Therefore, this study recommends strengthening context-based Islamic legal education grounded in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah to distinguish between normative religious teachings and culturally constructed beliefs.

Abstract

An earthquake that occurred on December 30, 2024 in Gresik Regency, located at 7.05° S and 112.62° E with a focal depth of 14 km and magnitude M3.3, was a shallow earthquake felt with an intensity of II–III MMI. This study aims to analyze the earthquake shaking intensity map (Shakemap), determine the earthquake source mechanism, and perform earthquake scenario modeling using the maximum magnitude based on the Indonesian Earthquake Source and Hazard Map (PUSGEN). Shakemap analysis was carried out using the BMKG Shakemap server based on accelerograph network data. Fault mechanism analysis was performed using focal mechanism software with P-wave polarity input obtained from waveform signal picking using SeisGram2K software. Meanwhile, the Shakemap scenario was generated using the ShakeMap application available at the Pasuruan Geophysical Station. The results show that the distribution of Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and shaking intensity is influenced not only by the distance from the epicenter but also by local geological conditions that contribute to ground-motion amplification. Source mechanism analysis indicates that the Gresik earthquake was dominated by a strike-slip faulting mechanism with a weak oblique component, interpreted as sinistral strike-slip motion along the RMKS–Tuban 3 fault zone. Scenario earthquake modeling with a magnitude of M 6.2 indicates that Gresik Regency has the potential to experience strong ground shaking with maximum intensities reaching VI–VII MMI, while surrounding areas such as Surabaya City, eastern Lamongan Regency, and western Bangkalan Regency may experience intensities up to VI MMI. These findings indicate that although the Gresik earthquake had a relatively small magnitude, the potential earthquake impact in Gresik and surrounding areas could become significant if a maximum-magnitude earthquake occurs, therefore, this study provides important information for earthquake disaster mitigation efforts.

Abstract

The dingo optimization algorithm (DOA) adopts the social life of dingo dogs. The dingo is a breed of ancient dog originating from Australia. Dingo hunting strategies such as assault with persecution, flocking, and scavenging behavior became the inspiration for DOA. In this paper, DOA is applied to a power system stabilizer (PSS) to dampen low-frequency oscillations (LFO) in a single-machine infinite bus (SMIB). DOA is used to obtain optimal parameters for PSS. The damping controller is designed for optimal lead-lag control. To obtain the performance of the DOA method, the results were compared with the uncontrolled method, conventional PSS, Whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA). Simulation using MATLAB with three different operating conditions, namely light load (20%), medium load (50%) and high load (100%). From the simulation using MATLAB with SMIB modeling, it was found that the application of the DOA method on PSS has the ability to reduce the average undershoot value by 28.16% and reduce the average undershoot value to 65.57% compared to the conventional PSS method.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Inflammation is a normal protective response to tissue injury caused by physical trauma, chemical exposure, or microbial agents. When excessive, this response may worsen tissue damage and require treatment. Interest in medicinal plants as alternative anti-inflammatory agents remains high because conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, although effective, may cause adverse effects. Puguntano herb (Picria fel-terrae Lour.) contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids or triterpenoids that may contribute to anti-inflammatory activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the methanolic extract of puguntano herb in male white rats with λ-carrageenan-induced paw edema and to identify the most effective tested dose. Methods: An experimental design was used in twenty-five healthy male rats divided into five groups. The negative control received 0.5% Na-CMC, the positive control received sodium diclofenac 2.25 mg/kg body weight, and the treatment groups received extract doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight. Acute inflammation was induced by intraplantar injection of 1% λ-carrageenan. Paw volume was measured with a digital plethysmometer for 360 minutes. Percentage of inflammation and percentage of inhibition were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test. Results: The methanolic extract showed anti-inflammatory activity at all tested doses. A dose-dependent pattern was observed, with greater edema suppression at higher doses. The 200 mg/kg body weight dose produced the strongest effect and showed activity comparable to sodium diclofenac. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of puguntano herb demonstrated anti-inflammatory potential in this model, with the 200 mg/kg body weight dose as the most effective treatment for further preclinical study

Abstract

Background: Bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli remain clinically relevant due to their ability to cause skin and gastrointestinal infections. The growing concern over antimicrobial resistance has increased interest in plant-derived antibacterial agents. Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) and red dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus polyrhizus) contain secondary metabolites that may contribute to bacterial growth inhibition. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of combined ethanolic extracts of A. muricata leaves and H. polyrhizus peel against S. aureus and E. coli, and to determine the most effective extract ratio based on inhibition zone diameter. Methods: This laboratory experimental study used the disc diffusion method on Nutrient Agar medium. The plant materials were extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol. Five extract ratios were tested, namely 0.05:2.95, 0.10:2.90, 0.15:2.85, 0.20:2.80, and 0.25:2.75. Amoxicillin was used as the positive control, while distilled water served as the negative control. Inhibition zones were measured after 24 hours of incubation at 37°C. Results: The extract combinations showed weak antibacterial activity against S. aureus, with mean inhibition zones ranging from 1.08 to 3.18 mm. Against E. coli, four ratios showed weak activity, while the 0.25:2.75 ratio produced moderate inhibition with the highest mean zone of 5.18 mm. The positive control produced a strong inhibition zone of 13.13 mm, whereas the negative control showed no inhibition. Conclusion: The combination of A. muricata leaf and H. polyrhizus peel extracts demonstrated limited antibacterial activity and did not indicate a strong synergistic effect. The 0.25:2.75 ratio showed the best activity against E. coli and may be considered for further optimization using higher concentrations and more specific antibacterial assays.
