Abstract

The selection of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) is a pivotal action in the English teaching and learning process. This study aimed to explore what teachers perceive and experience in vocabulary instruction in higher education. A narrative approach was employed in this study. Using the purposive sampling technique under the criteria of a minimum of four years of experience as permanent English teachers and limited the area of study only to one of religious higher education in Central Kalimantan, five English teachers were enrolled as participants. Unstructured, open-ended interviews were used as the instrument for collecting the primary data. After collecting the stories, the data were reported and validated using triangulation. The results revealed that teachers believed that using a variety of learning strategies to engage learners to be interested in vocabulary instruction was useful. Then, the challenges both external and internal factors faced by teachers in vocabulary instruction could be handled by employing the strategies that fit the students’ characteristics, such as learning vocabulary through songs, games, and social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and so forth. Therefore, it can be drawn to the conclusion that teachers must always be creative and innovative in action by utilizing technology advancement. Besides, the use of differentiated instruction approach could be better employed by teachers for solutions to problems, particularly in facilitating diverse student characteristics. Next, the use of various modes of learning or multimodal sources can also help students in higher education to get very meaningful vocabulary learning.

Abstract

The majority of ESL/EFL students is that writing is challenging and frustrating. Limited vocabulary and low idea gathering appears to be most difficult issues in writing process. This research was quasi-experimental, with a control group that was only used for the post-test. This research aims to analyses the effectiveness of infographics as instructional media on students' writing proficiency. Two classes totalling 64 students made up the sample, which was drawn using random cluster sampling. A writing test served as the research instrument. An independent t-test was used to assess the data. The findings indicated that the experimental group's students were more proficient writers. The experimental group did better than the control group in terms of means (85.97 > 83.48) and the t-test results (3.126 > 3.125). In comparison to the conventional instruction, it was shown that using infographics as instructional media had a substantial impact on students writing proficiency. The effect size computation yielded a result of 0.78, which was examined in the Cohen's d table. In conclusion, infographics had a significant effect on students' writing proficiency as an instructional media.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan awalan dan akhiran di Dialek Munti Gunung (MGD) yang termasuk derivasi dan infleksi. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tiga teknik, yaitu: observasi, teknik perekaman, dan teknik wawancara (mendengarkan dan mencatat). Tiga informan dari Munti Gunung telah dipilih berdasarkan kriteria. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada enam jenis awalan di Dialek Munti Gunung (MGD): {mΛ-}, {m-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, dan {Λ-} dan tiga jenis akhiran di Dialek Munti Gunung (MGD): {-Λŋ}, {-In} dan, {-ə}. Awalan dan akhiran di Dialek Munti Gunung(MGD) yang termasuk derivasi adalah awalan {mΛ-} dan {m-} dan akhiran {-Λŋ}, dan {-In}. Awalan dan akhiran di Dialek Munti Gunung (MGD) yang temasuk infleksi adalah awalan {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, {m-}, dan {Λ-} dan akhiran {-ə}, {-Λŋ}, dan {-In}. Kata Kunci : afikasi, dialek munti gunung, proses derivasi dan infleksi This study aimed at describing the prefixes and suffixes in Munti Gunung Dialect (MGD) which belong to derivation and inflection. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected using three techniques, namely: observation, recording technique, and interview (listening and noting) technique. Three informants sample from Munti Gunung were chosen based on criteria. The results of the study showed that there were six kinds of prefixes in Munti Gunung Dialect (MGD): prefix {mΛ-}, {m-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, and {Λ-} and there were three kinds of prefixes in Munti Gunung Dialect (MGD): {-Λŋ}, {-In} dan, {-ə}. Prefixes and suffixes in Munti Gunung Dialect (MGD) which belong to derivation: prefix {mΛ-} and {m-} and suffix {-Λŋ} and {-Ιn}. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh anak-anak dwi bahasa dari keluarga perkawinan campuran dalam melakukan interaksi dengan keluarga mereka di desa Singapadu, Kecamatan Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar, Provinsi Bali. Subyek penelitian ini adalah dua anak dwi bahasa dari keluarga perkawinan campuran. Penyelidikan difokuskan pada jenis strategi komunikasi yang mereka gunakan dalam melakukan interaksi dengan keluarga mereka, strategi komunikasi yang paling sering mereka terapkan ketika mereka melakukan interaksi, dan alasan mereka dalam menggunakan strategi komunikasi. Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus yang dikombinasikan dengan analisis kualitatif dan kuantitatif di mana teknik triangulasi digunakan . Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak dwi bahasa menggunakan tujuh strategi komunikasi yang meliputi: topic avoidance, approximation, circumlocution, clarification request, paralanguage, menggunakan gambar atau objek untuk membantu menyampaikan pesan, dan berbicara perlahan. Strategi komunikasi yang paling sering digunakan oleh anak-anak bilingual adalah paralanguage. Ada tiga alasan utama mereka menggunakan strategi komunikasi, yang pertama adalah untuk membuat keluarga mereka mengerti apa yang ingin mereka sampaikan, kedua karena strategi komunikasi mudah dan alami, dan alasan terakhir karena strategi cepat untuk digunakan .Kata Kunci : strategi komunikasi, anak-anak dari keluarga perkawinan campuran This study aimed at describing the communication strategies used by bilingual children of interracial marriage family in doing interaction with their family at Singapadu village, Sukawati distric, Gianyar regency, Bali province. The subjects of this study were two bilingual children of interracial marriage family. The investigation focused on the types of communication strategies that they used in doing interaction with their family, the most frequently communication strategy that they applied when they were doing the interaction, and their reasons in using the communication strategies. This research was a case study which combined qualitative and quantitative analysis in which a triangulation technique was used. The results of the data analysis show that the bilingual children used seven communication strategies which included: topic avoidance, approximation, circumlocution, clarification request, paralanguage, using pictures or objects to help conveying message, and speaking slowly. The most frequently used communication strategy used by the bilingual children was paralanguage. There were three main reasons that they stated in using the strategies, the first to make the family understand of what they expected, the second because the strategies were easy and natural, and the last reason because the strategies were quick to be used. keyword : communication strategies, children of interracial marriage family

Abstract

Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana prinsip pragmatik digunakan pada bahasa periklanan dari iklan yang terpasang di billboard sekitaran kota Singaraja. Peneliti adalah instrumen kunci pada penelitian ini sebagai pengumpul data melalui teknik dokumentasi dan interview tak terikat. Ada 8 iklan yang dianalisis berdasarkan maxim kerja sama Grice dan maxim kesopanan Leech. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar bahasa iklan yang dianalisis mematuhi maxim Quantity, Relevance dan Manner. Sementara itu, maxim yang sering dilanggar adalah maxim Quality. Mengenai analisis terhadap maxim kesopanan Leech, didapat bahwa maxim Tact dan Sympathy sangat sering diimplementasikan pada bahasa periklanan dari iklan yang terpasang di billboard sekitaran kota Singaraja.Kata Kunci : maxim kerja sama Grice, maxim kesopanan Leech dan bahasa periklanan The purpose of this qualitative research was to explain how pragmatic princples employed in the advertising language of billboard advertisement found around Singaraja city. The researcher was the key instrument in this study that collected the data by the technique of documentation and free interview. There were 8 advertisements analyzed on the basis of Grice’s Cooperative Principle maxims and Leech’s Politeness Principle Maxims. The findings showed that in terms of Grice’s maxims, most of the advertising language observed Quantity, Relevance and Manner maxim. Meanwhile, Quality maxim was mostly flouted. Regarding to Leech’s maxims, it was found that Tact and Sympathy maxim were the two maxims mostly implemented in the advertising language of billboard advertisement found around Singaraja city.keyword : Grice’s Cooperative Principle maxims, Leech’s Politeness Principle maxims and advertising language

Abstract

Bahasa adalah alat komunikasi yang sangat penting. Beberapa orang berbicara dengan bahasa yang berbeda-beda. Hal ini dikarenakan masyarakat yang memiliki budaya dan bahasa masing masing yang akan membangun sistem bahasa untuk digunakan dalam berkomunikasi. Seperti di era globalisasi ini, orang memiliki cara untuk berkomunikasi lebih banyak ke dunia. Hubungan sosial tidak hanya muncul dalam lingkungan tempat tinggal, tetapi dalam kehidupan dunia maya. Orang-orang yang berinteraksi di internet juga mengembangkan sistem komunikasi tertentu. Salah satu komunitas jejaring sosial yang memiliki kode khusus dalam interaksi yaitu aplikasi pesan Line. Pesan Line adalah jejaring sosial yang fungsinya untuk mempermudah seseorang menghubungi satu sama lain. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kode yang digunakan oleh pengguna dan artinya. Dalam penelitian ini, observasi dan teknik wawancara digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Oleh karena itu, iPad, internet, dan panduan wawancara menjadi instrumen yang sangat berguna. Penelitian ini dilakukan dari Februari 2014 sampai Mei 2014. Data dari riwayat pembicaraan dilakukan dari Januari 2014 dicatat menggunakan aplikasi PrintScreen di iPad. Berdasarkan data yang dikumpulkan, ditemukan bahwa kode yang digunakan dalam aplikasi pesan Line bervariasi khususnya yang berkaitan dengan lexicons. Mereka terdiri dari borrowed words, compounded words, dan acronyms. Sementara itu, emoticon dalam aplikasi Line diklasifikasikan menjadi emoticon ekspresi wajah dan emoticon tindakan. Jelas bahwa emoticon tidak hanya mewakili perasaan dan emosi, tetapi juga tindakan tertentu. Semua kode ini berhubungan dengan kreativitas para anggota dalam komunitas pesan Line, anggota komunitas pesan Line, dan juga keuntungan teks tertulis sebagai media komunikasi.Kata Kunci : sociolinguitics, kode, komunitas pesan Line. Language is an important tool of communication. However, people speak a language differently because of they come from a different background. This is because of a different community that impact to their language systems that used within their own people. As the development of the time, people need to develop their interaction to the world. The people who interact through the internet also increase a particular system. One of the social networking that have special code in the interaction among people is Line messenger application. Line messenger is a social networking which makes people easier to contact one another. This study research was intended to investigate the codes used in Line Messenger community and their meanings. In this study, observation and interview techniques were used to collect the data. Therefore, iPad, internet, and interview guide became useful instrument. This study was done from February 2014 until May 2014. The data from the chat history posted from January 2014 were recorded using Printscreen application in the iPad. Based on the data collected, it was found that the codes used in Line messenger application varied especially with regard to lexicons. They consist of borrowed words, compounded words, and acronym which explained by Yule (2006). Meanwhile, emoticons in Line messenger are classified into facial expression emoticons and action emoticons explained by Ruan (2011). It is clear that emoticons do not only represent feeling and emotions, but also particular actions.keyword : sociolinguitics, code, Line messenger community.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, peluang munculnya campur bahasa sangat mungkin terjadi. Fenomena tersebut selaras dengan fakta yang terjadi di Indonesia dimana Bahasa Inggris dipelajari bahasa asing. Campur Bahasa dapat diindikasikan dari dua atau lebih bahasa yang digunakan dalam percakapan selama proses pembelajaran. Para guru cenderung untuk mencampur bahasa yang dipelajari dengan bahasa pertama peserta didik untuk membuat proses belajar menjadi mudah untuk diikuti. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan fenomena campur bahasa yang digunakan oleh para guru dan siswa tingkat sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Kediri selama pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti meneliti campur bahasa yang muncul lalu menganalisa data yang didapat berdasarkan klasifikasi oleh Ho. Hasil dari penelitian dan pengambilan data menunjukkan bahwa hanya lima tipe campur bahasa dari tujuh tipe berdasarkan klasifikasi Ho yang muncul selama proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Klasifikasi tersebut adalah;(1) kata benda (2) kata kata leksikal (3) frase (4) kalimat tidak lengkap dan (5) kalimat tunggal lengkap. Jumlah total dari seluruh ungkapan ynag terkait dengan campur bahasa adalah 194 ungkapan.Kata Kunci : campur bahasa, SMA Negeri 1 Kediri, klasifikasi Ho ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to find out the code mixing used by the teachers and the students of the tenth graders in SMA Negeri 1 Kediri during English Class. In language learning, the opportunity of code mixing appeared is very possibly happening. This phenomenon is in line with the fact in Indonesia in which English is learned foreign language. The teachers tend to mix the language with the leaner’s first language in order to make the learning process become easier to be followed. In this study, the researcher observed the code mixing occurred and analyzed the data obtained based on Ho’s classification. The result of the observation and recordings showed that there were only five types from seven types of code mixing based in Ho’s classification that was appeared in teaching learning process. The classifications are; (1) Proper nouns (2) Lexical words, (3) Phrases, (4) Incomplete sentence and (5) Single Full Sentences. Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental yang bertujuan untuk menemukan apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan membaca siswa antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan NHT dan TPS. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui respon siswa terhadap teknik NHT dan TPS. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa di kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 Kubu di tahun akademik 2013/2014. Teknik Cluster Random Sampling digunakan untuk memilih sampel di mana kelas XI IPA 1 diajarkan dengan teknik TPS dan kelas XI IPA 3 diajarkan dengan teknik NHT. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah Randomized Posttest-Only Two Group Design. Hasil analisis deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kelompok NHT adalah 78,23 dan nilai rata-rata kelompok TPS adalah 75,19. Ini berarti bahwa nilai rata-rata kelompok NHT lebih tinggi dari nilai rata-rata kelompok TPS. Kemudian, analisis inferensial yang menggunakan t-test menunjukkan to adalah 2,418. Ini melebihi tcv yang mencapai 2,00 (taraf signifikansi 5%). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan NHT dan TPS. Selain itu, dari kuesioner yang diberikan kepada siswa menunjukkan bahwa 20 (66,7%) siswa memberikan respon yang sangat positif, dan 10 (33,3%) siswa memberikan respon positif terhadap teknik NHT. Sementara itu, 4 (12,5%) siswa memberikan respon yang sangat positif, 19 (59,4%) siswa memberikan respon positif, dan 9 (28,1%) siswa memberikan respon biasa saja terhadap teknik TPS.Kata Kunci : Kemampuan membaca, teknik NHT dan teknik TPS. This study was an experimental study which aimed at finding whether there was any significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using NHT and TPS. This study also aimed at knowing the students response toward NHT and TPS techniques. The population of this study was students at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kubu in academic year 2013/2014. Cluster Random Sampling technique was administered to select sample in which class XI IPA 1 treated by TPS technique and class XI IPA 3 treated by NHT technique. The research design used was Randomized Posttest-Only Two Group Design. The result of descriptive analysis showed that the mean score of NHT group was 78.23 and then the mean score of TPS group was 75.19. It means that the mean score of NHT group was higher than the mean score of TPS group. Then, the inferential analysis which used t-test showed that to was 2.418. It exceeded the tcv which was 2.00 (significance level 5%). It indicated that there was a significant difference among the students’ reading comprehension between students taught by using NHT and TPS. In addition, the questionnaire that given to the students showed that 20 (66.7%) students gave very positive response, and 10 (33.3%) students gave positive response toward NHT technique. Meanwhile, 4 (12.5%) students gave very positive response, 19 (59.4%) students gave positive response, and 9 (28.1%) students gave moderate response toward TPS technique.keyword : Reading Comprehension, NHT technique and TPS technique

Penelitian ini berjenis deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisa kesalahan tatabahasa dalam berbicara yang dilakukan oleh tour guide di Lovina, Singaraja. Dalam penelitian ini, kesalahan tatabahasa difokuskan pada kesalahan tata bahasa yang dilakukan oleh tour guide pada saat berbicara. Data dikumpulkan melalui rekaman suara dari tour guide. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukan terdapat sebanyak 95 kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh tour guide dalam berbicara. kesalahan tersebut antara lain sebanyak 46 (48,42%) verb form error, 15 (15,78%) article error, 5 (5,26%) subject-verb agreement error, 10 (10,52%) word order error, 8 (8,42%) noun error, 7 (7,36%) preposition error, 4 (4,21%) pronoun error, dari hasil tersebut terlihat verb form error merupakan kesalahan yang paling sering dilakukan oleh tour guide saat berbicara. Lebih jauh lagi, hasil penelitian juga menunjukan beberapa faktor penyebab terjadinya kesalahan dalam kemampuan berbicara tour guide berasal dari intralingua transfer, interlingua transfer dan context of learning. Secara khusus kesalahan tata bahasa tersebut dipengaruhi karena the tour guides’ first language, the incorrect translation, the avoidance committed by the tour guide, kurangnya pemahaman dalam bentuk tense dan latar belakang pendidikan secara informal.Kata Kunci : Grammar eror, berbicara, penyebab eror This study was a descriptive qualitative research, which aimed at analyzing the grammatical errors in speaking committed by the tour guides in Lovina, Singaraja. In this study, grammatical errors referred to the errors of using grammar committed by the tour guides in their speaking. This study also concerned with analyzing the factors which caused the grammatical error. The data were collected from the records of the tour guides’ speaking. The results showed that there were 95 errors found in the tour guides’ speaking. Further, it was found the factors which caused grammatical errors came from intralingua transfer, interlingua transfer and context of learning. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) menganalisis tipe-tipe campur kode dalam majalah PC Media; dan (2) menjelaskan pengertian campur kode yang ditemukan dalam majalah PC Media. Data yang dikumpulkan melalui studi kepustakaan dan dianalisis dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Kemudian hasil analisis akan ditampilkan dalam bentuk diagram dan campur kode yang ditemukan ditampilkan dalam tabel. Penulis mengambil delapan artikel dari dua edisi majalah yang berbeda, dari 42 penemuan yang ada di dalam majalah dirasa cukup untuk mewakili setiap tipe campur kode. Hasil dari analisis mengungkapkan bahwa terdapat 42 tipe campur kode yang masuk ke dalam teori Ho dan Suwito. Hasil prosentase yang didapat adalah: (1) berdasarkan teori Ho; proper nouns (28%), lexical nouns (26%), letters of alphabet (23%), phrases (17%), and short forms (6%); (2) berdasarkan teori Suwito; word insertion (61%), shape baster insertion (21%), and phrase insertion (18%).Kata Kunci : campur kode, sosiolinguistik, majalah PC Media, This study aimed at: (1) analyzing types of code mixing in the PC Media magazine; and (2) describing the meaning of code mixing found in the PC Media magazine. The data was gathered through library research and analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. Then, the result of analysis showed in the form of chart and the code mixing found showed in the form of table.The researcher took eight articles form two different editions of the magazine, from the 42 findings in the magazine it was enough to represent some types of code mixing. The result of the analysis revealed that there were 42 types code mixing included in the theory of Ho and Suwito.
