Abstract

This study was motivated by the low cognitive learning outcomes of students in Science and Social Studies (IPAS) learning. The study aimed to determine the difference in students' cognitive learning outcomes between those taught using the RADEC learning model assisted by Zep Quiz and those taught using the conventional learning model in fourth-grade elementary school. This study employed a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental Design, specifically the Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research sample consisted of fourth-grade students of SDN 15 Koto Lalang as the experimental class and SDN 14 Koto Lalang as the control class. Data were collected through learning achievement tests and analyzed using the normality test, homogeneity test, and Independent Sample t-test on the gain scores (the difference between pre-test and post-test scores) with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0. The results showed that the mean post-test score of the experimental class was 87.04, while that of the control class was 80.93. In addition, students' evaluation results demonstrated continuous improvement throughout the learning process. The hypothesis test yielded a Sig. (one-sided p) value of 0.001, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). Therefore, H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference in the improvement of students' cognitive learning outcomes between the class taught using the RADEC learning model assisted by Zep Quiz and the class taught using the conventional learning model.

Abstract

Low student interest and engagement, as well as poor learning outcomes in IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences), stem from a lack of variety and innovation in the instructional media employed. Digital pop-up books had not previously been used as learning media for the fifth-grade IPAS subject addressed in this study. The research aimed to develop a digital pop-up book as a learning medium that meets criteria for validity, practicality, and effectiveness. “This research and development study utilized the ADDIE model: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation.”The findings revealed a high level of validity for the digital pop-up book (validity score: 91.67%). At the first trial school, SDN 47 Korong Gadang, results showed a practicality score of 94% based on teacher feedback “highly practical” and 89.90% based on student feedback (highly practical); an N-gain score of 65% “highly effective”; and a student participation rate of 78% “active”. In the second trial at SDN 09 Korong Gadang, the N-gain score reached 68% “moderate effectiveness”, student participation was 80% “active”, and practicality ratings were 90% from teachers (highly practical) and 88.13% from students “highly practical”. Additionally, research at SDN 34 Kuranji showed an N-gain score of 70% “moderate effectiveness”, student participation of 83% “highly active”, and practicality ratings of 96% from teachers (highly practical) and 98.10% from students “highly practical”. Thus, the digital pop-up book proved to be a valid, practical, and effective learning medium.

Abstract

This study was prompted by the low reading comprehension skills observed among fourth-grade elementary students. Key problems identified included students' inability to retell what they had read, difficulty answering text-based questions—often resorting to asking the teacher directly rather than attempting an answer—an inability to draw conclusions from a passage, and difficulty grasping both explicit and implicit information within a text. Even students who could read fluently still struggled to understand the content itself. This research aimed to describe how implementing the Guided Reading strategy could improve reading comprehension among fourth-grade students at SDN 12 Padang Besi, Padang City. The study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, with one teacher and 27 fourth-grade students serving as research subjects. The findings showed improvement across every aspect examined. The Teaching Module assessment rose from an average of 87.50% (Good) in Cycle I to 96.43% (Very Good) in Cycle II. Teacher performance improved from 86.54% (Good) to 94.23% (Very Good), while student activity followed a similar pattern, increasing from 86.54% (Good) to 94.23% (Very Good). Knowledge-based learning outcomes also rose, from 80.10% (Sufficient) in Cycle I to 92.59% (Very Good) in Cycle II. Students' reading comprehension scores improved from 81.41% (Good) in Cycle I to 94.14% (Very Good) in Cycle II. These results indicate that the Guided Reading strategy is effective in enhancing reading comprehension among fourth-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning outcomes of fifth-grade students in the Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subject at SDN 17 Batu Gadang, Padang City. These low outcomes were attributed to teacher-centered instruction, a lack of student engagement in the learning process, and the suboptimal use of learning models capable of fostering students' critical thinking abilities and skills. The study employed a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative) using Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted over two cycles. Each cycle comprised planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were the teacher and 25 fifth-grade students at SDN 17 Batu Gadang, Padang City. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The average lesson plan (RPM) assessment score increased from 89.25% (good) to 96.40% (excellent). Teacher activity scores rose from 82.75 (good) to 93.75 (excellent), while student activity scores increased from 86.1% (good) to 96.80% (excellent). Furthermore, the students' average learning outcomes improved from 65.71 (fair) in Cycle I to 85.46 (good) in Cycle II. Thus, the Project-Based Learning model proved effective in enhancing IPAS learning outcomes in primary school.

Abstract

Learning motivation may support students’ engagement in complex cognitive activities, yet the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of fifth-grade students at SDN 18 Sungai Tarab remained below expectations. This study examined the direction and strength of the association between learning motivation and HOTS in science learning. A quantitative correlational design was applied to 48 students from classes VA and VB, selected purposively from a population of 71 fifth-grade students. Motivation data were obtained through a Likert questionnaire, while HOTS was measured using 15 multiple-choice questions and one essay question covering analysis, evaluation, and creation. The instruments underwent expert review and field testing. Data were processed descriptively and analyzed using Pearson’s product-moment correlation in SPSS 27. The coefficients were 0.453 for class VA, indicating a moderate positive relationship, and 0.918 for class VB, indicating a very strong positive relationship; both outputs were reported at p < 0.05. Teachers’ observations produced an average achievement score of 85.5%, supporting the motivation data. These findings indicate that stronger learning motivation tends to occur alongside better HOTS performance in science learning. The results should be interpreted within the study’s limited, cross-sectional sample.

Abstract

This study focused on developing a Discovery Learning-based instructional medium utilizing digital maps to enhance the geospatial literacy of fourth-grade elementary school students in IPAS learning, particularly on map-related topics. The study adopted a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The resulting product, GeoExplore, was created through Google Sites and integrated with Google Earth exploration, instructional materials, teacher guidance, and student worksheets. The developed medium underwent validation by material, language, and media experts and was implemented in four elementary schools to assess its practicality. The validation results indicated scores of 95% for material, 80% for language, and 95% for media, resulting in an overall average of 90%, which was classified as very valid. The practicality assessment also demonstrated positive responses from both teachers and students across the four schools. Furthermore, effectiveness was examined through pretest and posttest scores, with the N-Gain results indicating a high category for the schools with complete effectiveness data. Therefore, GeoExplore was considered valid and practical and showed potential to support the development of students' geospatial literacy through digital map exploration.
