Abstract

Character values are believed to be solid roots in supporting the integrity of the nation and state. The collapse of a country is resulted by the weakening of the character's values in the life of the people. The Ministry of National Education implements character education at all levels of education, including in Early Childhood Education. Developing Children”s characters is an obligation on us all, including parents and teacher. Parents are the primary educators of character, but empirically research shows that all adults who have contact with their children need to contribute to such education, especially their children’s teachers. School has more influence later than parenting because of parents are much more emotionally salient in the first years of life, and many children do not experience full or even paart-time schooling until they are three, four or five years of age, when many aspect of character are already developing. In kindergarten, teacher can develop some values of character through learning, such as construction activities in a group and dramatic play. Construction activities involves manipulating one or multiple elements of the play environmet to construct something new. Dramatic play can be defined as a type of play where children accept and assign roles, and then act them out. In dramatic play, children negotiate and refine their growing understanding by consulting with other children and the teacher. Therefore, through construction activities and dramatic play, teacher can develop some values character such as discipline, tolerance, self-confidence, self-reliance, creative, helping others, cooperation, responsibility, hard-working and leadership

Abstract

The article entitled The Ray of Light: An Activity Approach of Reggio Emilia is a literature review. This article aims to reveal how light can play a role in early childhood education. Exploration activities using light can stimulate critical thinking skills in children. The use of light in the realm of early childhood education was introduced Loris Malaguzzi who was named reggio emilia approach. The reggio emilia approach uses the Vigotsky theory, Piaget theory and uses the philosophy of John Dewey. This approach gives freedom to children to choose their own learning activities, solve a problem, cooperate with others so that children can build their own critical thinking skills and social abilities. The use of light in early childhood education is known as the ray of light atelier, which is a place for children to conduct research and experiments using light. Children who are given the freedom to experiment with light, can provide opportunities to teach children about the concepts of science, namely reflection, refraction, as well as introducing the concept of size and color

Abstract

This essay draws data from several studies that have been carried out some previous research that discusses the teaching beliefs in Science in Engineering and Mathematical Technology (STEM). This essay aims to express some opinions of early childhood education teachers about implementing STEM in terms of high and low economic backgrounds. This essay uses a systematic literature review method. A total of 8 related journal articles that examine STEM in children and articles taken from 2010 to 2018 are used as sources to be reviewed. The belief of early childhood teachers in implementing a learning innovation is still rarely done, this arises because there is still a lack of understanding of teachers related to learning innovations that always develop in accordance with the times. Teachers' teaching experience and their awareness of the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and the way in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching are integrated play different roles in teaching in the classroom. The results of the analysis carried out there are differences in beliefs and awareness revealed between teachers in schools with a high economic background and a low economy related to teacher beliefs in implementing STEM learning in early childhood. The findings of this analysis support the need for professional improvement that can increase teacher understanding of the importance of STEM in early childhood

Abstract

This study aims to develop a science learning design using experimental methods in improving children's critical thinking skills. The critical thinking indicator applied in this research is the child's ability to express questions and statements based on their analysis of the experimental activities carried out. The research subjects were group B in two different kindergartens using the Design-Based Research (DBR) method through 4 stages, namely 1) problem identification and analysis, 2) developing a prototype solution based on theory 3) conducting an iterative process to test and improve 4) reflecting on product design principles. The conclusions and results of this study are the design of science learning through experimental methods in the form of a structure that includes science themes, competency formulations and developmental achievement indicators, descriptions of science material for teachers, scenarios, and learning evaluations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning on Students' Critical Thinking Ability between classes that apply the Problem Based Learning model and those that apply conventional models. The research design used was Quasy Experimental Research. This research will be conducted at SD Negeri 2 Pasanggrahan with the sample used, namely class IV consisting of 2 study groups or a class of 40 students. Data collection methods used were tests and observations. The data analysis technique used the t test to determine differences in critical thinking skills in the experimental class after being given treatment. The results of data analysis using the t test obtained results -t count <-t table (-3.426 <-1.997) and a significance value <0.05 (0.001 <0.05). Therefore, it shows that there is a significant difference in students' critical thinking skills between the experimental class and the class using the conventional model.

Abstract

After the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become a global consensus in 2015, its implementation raises questions about the role of education in achieving these goals. Because education clearly covers the content of all the SDGs and provides the skills and competencies needed to face the challenges of a sustainable future. Education for sustainable development (ESD) is the role of education to promote sustainable development, which in this study is applied through the introduction and implementation of green behavior activities in elementary schools. The purpose of this study is to measure the sustainability consciousness of elementary school students through the implementation of ESD in elementary schools. This research is an experimental research in the form of pre-experimental design (single group designs). The instrument used in this research is the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ) which allows the investigation of students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of sustainability. The results of this study indicate that students who have been given an education for sustainable development program through the introduction of green behavior experience a significant increase in sustainability consciousness. The implications of this research provide an overview of cognitive and affective responses to students regarding issues that are the scope of ESD such as global issues, issues related to human sustainability, consciousness of recovery from environmental damage that is happening today, and thinking about how to preservation is able to survive and can fulfill life in the future.

Abstract

The amount of damage that has been caused by waste as a form of human indifference to the environment requires real action to deal with it. Various efforts have been made to reduce waste in Indonesia. One of which is to integrate the principles of 3R waste management (reduce, reuse, and recycle) in the materials for making handicrafts in elementary schools. This study aims to analyze the suitability of the material for making handicrafts with the 3R principle. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method with content analysis techniques. The data source is the Student Book for 1st grade to 6th of elementary school Curriculum 2013. The research instrument used is a checklist containing the criteria for the suitability of craft-making materials with 3R principles. The results showed that the material for making handicrafts in the elementary school student books was very suitable with the 3R principles. 1st grade has a suitability category of 61.11%, 2nd grade is 75%, 3rd grade is 100%, 4th grade is 83.33%, 5th grade is 100%, and 6th grade is 83.33%. So that the overall suitability of all grades is 83.78%, which means the material is very suitable with the 3R principle.
