Abstract

Sustainability literacy is increasingly recognized as a critical competence for pre-service science teachers in addressing global sustainability challenges. The availability of psychometrically robust instruments in the Indonesian higher education context remains limited. This study aims to validate a sustainability literacy instrument within the cognitive domain using a Rasch dichotomous model to evaluate reliability, validity, item-fit statistics, and unidimensionality. The assessment instrument was designed to measure the extent of sustainability literacy among pre-service science teachers. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, involving 144 students from universities in Riau, Indonesia. Participants completed a sustainability literacy instrument comprising 30 multiple-choice items, developed based on the Sulitest framework. Data were analyzed using the Rasch measurement model with the assistance of Winsteps version 3.73 software, focusing on item fit indicators (Outfit MNSQ, ZSTD, and PTMEA Corr.), reliability indices, and principal component analysis of residuals. The results demonstrated that the instrument achieved good internal consistency (α = 0.85), high item reliability (0.94), and stable person reliability (0.84). Two items were identified as misfitting and recommended for revision, while the remaining items met acceptable MNSQ and PTMEA criteria. Furthermore, unidimensionality was confirmed, indicating that the instrument measures a single latent construct of cognitive sustainability literacy. The validated instrument can be used by teacher education institutions to diagnose pre-service teachers’ sustainability knowledge and to inform curriculum improvement. Its distinctive contribution lies in adapting an internationally recognized framework to the Indonesian higher education context through Rasch-based validation.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the fact that biodiversity is declining; therefore, the involvement of all parties, including students, is needed to help save biodiversity. One way to do this is to implement meaningful learning by utilizing the closeness of students and gadgets through the application of personal digital inquiry-integrated citizen science projects in the classroom, which involve experts in carrying out biodiversity conservation projects in the form of a "digital herbarium" uploaded on Instagram. Students’ responses are important as a reference to the extent to which PDI learning integrated with CSP has succeeded. This study aims to analyze students’ responses to Personal Digital Inquiry (PDI) learning integrated with the Citizen Science Project (CSP) on biodiversity material in grade X high school students. This research is a descriptive study using a survey method. Questionnaires were used to collect research data. A total of 42 respondents participated in this study. The questionnaire contains statements about the implementation of learning using six indicators, which were compiled into 34 statements using a Likert scale. The results show a score of 79.73, which is considered good. Students feel enthusiastic and happy to participate in learning, get new experiences interacting with scientists and the surrounding community, increase closeness with teachers and colleagues, and increase awareness to maintain biodiversity by utilizing social media.

Abstract

The research on the contributions of Citizen Science (CS) at the school and university levels has primarily focused on the technical execution of projects undertaken by participants. Rarely has it measured the types of contributions these projects have on the science learning outcomes of the participants. This study aims to understand various types of Citizen Science Projects and their contributions to science learning achievements at the school and university levels. The study employs the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method, consisting of five stages: identification, scanning, eligibility, dan inclusion. The research findings identify 19 types of CSPs that contribute to science learning achievements at the school and university levels. Six indicators of science learning outcomes are measured through the implementation of CSPs in science education, both in schools and universities. These indicators include interest in science and the environment, motivation for learning science, self-efficacy, knowledge of content and scientific processes, science inquiry skills, and environmental awareness. The contributions of CSPs to these measured indicators of science learning outcomes show positive and significant results. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that CSPs contribute to science learning outcomes through input, output, and nurturant effects resulting from the implementation of CSPs. Educators can incorporate CSPs into science education to facilitate more optimal science learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Puma concolor exhibits morphological similarities to large cats of the genus Panthera, which often lead to ambiguity in assessing its phylogenetic relationships. This study aimed to analyze the phylogenetic position of Puma concolor within the family Felidae using the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit I (COI). Phylogenetic analyses were conducted on 28 Felidae species with three outgroup species using MEGA4 and PAUP*. The results showed that Puma concolor is clearly separated from the Panthera clade and occupies an independent phylogenetic position, supported by bootstrap values as well as Consistency Index and Retention Index values greater than 0.50. These findings confirm that the morphological similarities between pumas and large cats are the result of convergent evolution and support the classification of Puma concolor within the subfamily Felinae.

Abstract

Not a few students who have difficulty interpreting the material being studied in terms of life encourage the need for a paradigm shift in science learning, which is directed at lifelong learning. In this paper, an entrepreneurship-oriented 5E (Engagement, Explain, Exploration, Elaboration, and Evaluation) inquiry learning program is developed, which is also often called 5E+e. This research investigates the improvement of lifelong learning for the prospective teachers during the 5E+e inquiry in the plant diversity course. The quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-postest design was used. The research subjects were taken by purposive sampling, namely the fifth-semester students of the Biology Education Study Program at one of the Teachers Institution in Central Java with 31 participants. Data were gathered using a questionnaire filled out by students before (pre) and after (post) the treatment of the 5E+e inquiry learning and observation. The data analysis was carried out in both quantitative and qualitative-descriptive manners to make a comprehensive conclusion. The results revealed that the average lifelong learning score of prospective teachers compiled with rubrics had increased between before (2.68) and after being given the program (3.26) with a maximum score of 4.00. Thus, it can be concluded that the entrepreneurship-oriented inquiry learning program applied to the plant diversity course can increase the lifelong learning of prospective teachers.
