Abstract

The article aims to provide an overview of designing a citizen science project in ecological learning, focusing on the case of gold mining pollution in the Batanghari River area. This research employed a qualitative method, non-interactive type with the approach used being concept analytical. The design of the citizen science project is conducted through a sequential cycle with its main components including: identifying the need or problem, determining if citizen science is the right approach, designing the project, building the community, managing the data, and evaluating the project. This project design illustrates an organized method of citizen science in ecological learning that is customized to the gold mining area. The contribution of participants is very important to emphasise at every activity in the project design, therefore the development of activities in this project refers to the logic model. The type of project relevant to the issue raised is to assess the potential or ecological status of the Batanghari River through the measurement of biological quality elements, physico-chemical elements, and hydromorphological quality elements, referring to the European Environment Agency standards. The design incorporates two distinct components: a collaborative project model and a framework based on research, both of which are arranged into mini-project activities. As a result, the project will contribute to improving students' skills in monitoring and collaborating with communities, as well as accommodating ecological learning activities intended as actions to help mitigate the problem of pollution due to gold mining in the Batanghari River.

Abstract

Citizen Science has emerged as a popular and widely used approach in scientific research. This study analyses CS research through the lens of themes, research locations, and data analysis methods. A systematic literature review employing the PRISMA method was conducted, resulting in the analysis of 45 relevant articles retrieved from the Science Direct database. The results indicate that environmental pollution (31%) and conservation (24%) were the most prevalent project topics within CS research. Questionnaires emerged as the dominant data collection technique, while quantitative analysis methods were more frequently employed. Furthermore, the geographical distribution of CS research revealed a concentration in America and Europe. Notably, the application of CS research remains limited in Asia and Africa. An additional finding suggests a gap in research focusing on educational themes, particularly those exploring the involvement of educatorstudents, a local traditional leader in Citizen Science ProjectKeywords: citizen science; research trends; systematic literature review

Abstract

Local wisdom is built from the existence of social values that are upheld in the social structure of the community taught from generation to generation. Some of them can be used in implementing science learning commonly called ethnoscience. However, not all local wisdom can be used as science learning materials. This study aims to examine the local wisdom of Lampung that can be used for the development of science learning materials that are in accordance with the nature of science, which must have rational, empirical values, and can be verified or proven scientifically. This research is a literature study by looking for relevant research references. The research procedure is carried out in stages, namely collecting library materials, reading, recording, studying, collecting concepts or manuscripts and then elaborating from the data collected. The results obtained are 5 local wisdom that can be elaborated with science learning in the context of environmental conservation, namely Nyalau, repong damar, bubu, ngelahang and the ban on mangrove clearance.

Abstract

Classifying plant species within the Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae families presents inherent challenges due to the complex genetic diversity and overlapping morphological traits among species. This study explores the difficulties in accurate classification by comparing 11 supervised learning algorithms applied to DNA barcode data, aiming to enhance the precision of species family classification in these taxonomically intricate plant families. The ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase large sub-unit (rbcL) gene, selected as a DNA barcode locus for plants, is used to represent species within the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families. The experimental results demonstrate that nearly all tested models achieve accurate species classification into the appropriate families, with an accuracy rate exceeding 97%, except for the Naïve Bayes model. Regarding computational time, the Random Forest model requires significantly more time for training than other models. Regarding memory usage, the Least Squares Support Vector Machine with a polynomial kernel, and Regularized Logistic Regression consume more memory than other models. These machine learning models exhibit strong concordance with NCBI's classifications when predicting families using the test dataset, effectively categorizing species into the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae families.

Abstract

This research aims to explore variations in student learning outcomes in Citizen Science Project (CSP) based biodiversity learning. The research method uses qualitative with a phenomenological approach to detail students' holistic experiences and understand the essence of the products produced. This research design was carried out by combining interviews, observation and analysis of student products as the main data sources. The research was carried out in one of the schools in Bandung City. The research results showed that students produced a variety of products, including herbariums, posters, posts on the PlantNet application, and inventory books. The overall product reflects a deep understanding of biodiversity and the use of a variety of skills, such as classification, identification and communication. CSP-based learning design makes a major contribution to the variety of learning outcomes because students are not only involved in collecting scientific data but are also able to express their findings through different media. This research provides new insights regarding the potential and effectiveness of CSP-based biodiversity learning in stimulating creativity and variations in students' learning outcomes. The findings of this research can be the basis for developing more innovative learning methods oriented towards developing students' skills in the context of sustainability and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract

Pesatnya peningkatan permintaan minyak sawit secara global telah menyebabkan intensifikasi perkebunan kelapa sawit. Sebagian besar pengelola perkebunan sawit di provinsi oleh masyarakat kecil. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menghitung produksi dan jumlah limbah kelapa sawit yang dihasilkan pada perkebunan yang dikelola masyarakat. Data sekunder perkebunan sawit rakyat dari Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) digunakan untuk menghitung jumlah limbah dan memprediksi jumlah limbah sawit. Metode prediksi menggunakan time series modeller method dengan bantuan SPSS 23. Analisis data menggunakan statistika deskriptif untuk menghitung jumlah limbah. Analisis data menggunakan statistika inferensial dalam meramalkan jumlah limbah sawit hingga tahun 2035. Terdapat trend peningkatan secara signifikan produksi dan limbah sawit dalam kurun waktu 10 tahun mendatang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah rata-rata limbah sawit meliputi tandan kosong 3,1 juta ton, cangkang 0,9 juta ton, fiber 2,1 juta ton, pelepah 15,9 juta ton dan batang 98,9 juta ton. Peningkatan limbah sawit akan terus terjadi akan sehingga dibutuhkan kesadaran masyarakat dalam pengelolaan limbah untuk lingkungan yang berkelanjutan. Maka, semua praktisi termasuk pendidikan dapat mengambil peran dalam penguatan kesadaran masyarakat dalam pengelolaan limbah kelapa sawit di provinsi riau

Abstract

Authentic and practice-based learning approaches to develop students' problem-solving skills in the context of complex environmental problems are needed. This study aims to measure how students' problem-solving skills have changed through Citizen Science Project that integrated in ecology courses using stacking analysis techniques in the Rasch model. The method in this research used a descriptive quantitative approach by comparing the level of change in problem solving skills after the intervention of learning activities with citizen science projects through pre-test and post-test. There were thirty students participating in total. The results of the Rasch analysis show that the average problem-solving skills score is 0.73, with a Cronbach Alpha value of 0.97, person reliability of 0.97, and item reliability of 0.88. These values show very good interaction between students and question items, as well as very good consistency in student answers. Logit item measures of changes in students' problem solving skills show that almost students experienced an increase in their ability to understand component of the questions construction. Students in this research were able to sharpen their problem-solving skills through the citizen science projects they completed.Abstrak. Pendekatan pembelajaran yang autentik dan berbasis praktik untuk mengembangkan keterampilan pemecahan masalah mahasiswa dalam konteks permasalahan lingkungan yang kompleks diperlukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur bagaimana perubahan kemampuan pemecahan masalah mahasiswa melalui proyek citizen science yang diintegrasikan dalam mata kuliah ekologi dengan menggunakan teknik analisis stacking dalam model Rasch. Metode dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif dengan membandingkan tingkat perubahan keterampilan pemecahan masalah setelah diberikan intervensi kegiatan pembelajaran dengan proyek citizen science melalui pre-test dan post-test. Total ada tiga puluh mahasiswa yang berpartisipasi. Hasil analisis Rasch menunjukkan rata-rata skor kemampuan mahasiswa sebesar 0,73, dengan nilai Cronbach Alpha sebesar 0,97, person reliabilitas sebesar 0,97, dan reliabilitas item sebesar 0,88. Nilai-nilai tersebut menunjukkan interaksi yang sangat baik antara mahasiswa dengan item soal, serta konsistensi jawaban mahasiswa yang sangat baik. Proyek citizen science yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa dalam penelitian ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah mereka.

Abstract

The concept of the characteristics of biodiversity is vital to be understood by students as a first step in managing and preserving the biodiversity. This study aimed to describe students' conceptions in vertebrate diversity and classification courses using concept maps. This research was conducted at one of the Biology Education Study Program Universities in Bogor, carried out in the even semester of 2023/2024, involving 42 participants. Data were collected through observation techniques with concept maps. The analysis process consisted of collecting information, simplifying information, presenting information, and drawing conclusions. The analysis results illustrate that students' conceptions of classification systematics, variability, phylogenetics, and preserving diversity and the environment show that they know the concept by 40.83%. The concept of the role of diversity in human life experienced the highest conception understanding of 54.61%. Students experienced many misconceptions about the concepts of characteristics, anatomy and morphology, genomes, and variability of biodiversity by 36.16%. Then 52.77% of students not knowing the concept of preserving diversity and the environment. The results of the concept map illustrate that most students still experience misconceptions and not knowing the concept of vertebrate diversity in detail. Therefore, training and strengthening concepts for students in classifying vertebrate animals are needed.Abstrak. Konsep mengenai karakteristik makhluk hidup penting untuk dipahami oleh mahasiswa sebagai langkah awal dalam mengelola dan melestarikan keanekaragaman makhluk hidup. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan konsepsi mahasiswa pada mata kuliah keanekaragaman dan klasifikasi vertebrata menggunakan peta konsep. Penelitian ini dilakukan di salah satu Perguruan Tinggi Prodi Pendidikan Biologi di Bogor, dilaksanakan pada semester genap tahun 2023/2024 dengan melibatkan 42 orang partisipan. Data dikumpulkan melalui teknik observasi dengan peta konsep. Proses analisis terdiri dari pengumpulan informasi, penyederhanaan informasi, penyajian informasi, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil analisis menggambarkan bahwa konsepsi mahasiswa tentang sistematika klasifikasi, variabilitas, filogenetik dan konsep pelestarian keanekaragaman makhluk hidup dan lingkungan menunjukkan tahu konsep sebesar 40,83%. Konsep mengenai peranan keanekaragaman makhluk hidup bagi kehidupan manusia mengalami pemahaman konsepsi paling tinggi sebesar 54.61%. Mahasiswa banyak mengalami miskonsepsi pada konsep karakteristik, anatomi dan morfologi, genom, dan variabilitas makhluk hidup sebesar 36.16%. Kemudian 52.77% mahasiswa tidak tahu konsep pelestarian keanekaragaman makhluk hidup dan lingkungan. Hasil peta konsep menggambarkanan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa masih mengalami miskonsepsi dan tidak tahu konsep mengenai konsep keanekaragaman vertebrata secara detail. Oleh karenanya diperlukan latihan dan penguatan konsep bagi mahasiswa dalam klasifikasi hewan vertebrata.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan ensiklopedia digital mamalia berbasis Citizen Science Project (CSP) yang difokuskan pada empat aspek yaitu kebahasaan, penampilan, teknis dan materi. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester III yang berjumlah 30 mahasiswa. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kuantitatif, menggunakan kuesioner yang terdiri dari 19 butir pertanyaan dan disebarkan melalui google forms. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa memberikan penilaian positif berdasarkan tingginya persentase jawaban sangat setuju dan setuju. Persentase penilaian pada aspek kebahasaan, rata-rata 45,83% mahasiswa sangat setuju bahwa kalimat yang digunakan mudah dipahami dan komunikatif. Pada aspek penampilan, rata-rata 54,29% mahasiswa sangat setuju tampilan dan fitur yang disajikan jelas, sesuai dengan materi, dan memiliki komposisi warna yang menarik. Pada aspek teknis, rata-rata 55,24% mahasiswa sangat setuju bahwa proses login dapat dilakukan dengan mudah. Pada aspek materi, rata-rata 58,73% mahasiswa sangat setuju materi yang disajikan sudah cukup luas dan informatif. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan ensiklopedia digital mamalia berbasis CSP mendapatkan penilaian yang sangat baik dari mahasiswa. Temuan ini dapat dijadikan dasar untuk pengembangan lebih lanjut, terutama dalam menyempurnakan fitur-fitur agar lebih menarik dan memperluas cakupan informasi mengenai mamalia.

Abstract

Adanya miskonsepsi dan kesulitan siswa dalam pembelajaran materi mutasi menyebabkan pemahaman dan hasil belajar siswa mengalami penurunan. Peran guru sangat penting dalam memfasilitasi pembelajaran siswa. Guru seharusnya dapat merancang dan memanfaatkan model, metode, dan media yang tepat agar pembelajaran dapat berlangsung secara efektif, Seperti pada sifat materi yang abstrak atau tidak dapat diamati secara langsung, termasuk di dalamnya pada konsep materi mutasi dan evolusi. Tujuan pada penelitian ini untuk memetakkan konsep-konsep penting pada pembelajaran mutasi dan variasi genetik berupa kompleksitas dan keabstrakkan untuk memahami materi evolusi Organisme. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi literatur. Setelah dilakukan pengkajian pada berbagai literatur, didapatkan identifikasi dan analisis mengenai konsep mutasi dan variasi genetik. Sehingga, dapat digunakan oleh guru untuk referensi dalam merancang pembelajaran. Terdapat Ide besar diantaranya faktor penyebab mutasi, jenis mutasi, dampak mutasi dan hubungan antara variasi genetik, mutasi, spesiasi, dan biodiversitas yang muncul dalam CoRe menjadi beberapa pertimbangan yang penting dalam konseptualisasi suatu topik saat mengajarkan pada siswa dengan adanya kedalaman dan keluasan materi, guru masih dapat memangkas materi yang disesuaikan dengan kondisi lingkungan belajar siswa. Pembelajaran harus mempertimbangkan kondisi siswa dan guru sehingga penggunaan pendekatan, model, media, dan metode sangat menentukan keberhasilan dalam mengajarkan pelajaran evolusi organisme yang bersifat abstrak ini.
