Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze the improvement of mastery of student concepts after the implementation of team-based learning strategy, as well as to analyze its relationship with critical thinking skills. The research method is a quasi-experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. The subject of this study consists of 40 students who attended vertebrate zoology courses as an experimental class and 45 students as control class. The instrument used is the multiple choice test. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using SPSS 16 comprising analysis of mean difference test (t-test), effect size, and Pearson two tail correlation test. The result shows that the improvement of student mastery concept in experimental class is better than control class. This can be seen from the average difference test (t-test) of N-gain (<g>) which shows a significant difference (α = 5%), and the value of effect size (d) of 0.68 (high category). The Result of correlation test shows that critical thinking skill has a positive relation with mastery of student concept with co-determination value 0.4058 which means that critical thinking skill contributes 40.58% to student mastery concept. Keywords: Team-based learning, concept mastery, zoology vertebrate courses Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peningkatan penguasaan konsep mahasiswa setelah diterapkannya pembelajaran berbasis kelompok, serta menganalisis hubungannya dengan keterampilan berpkir kritis. Metode penelitian yang dilakukan adalah quasi experiment dengan disain penelitian pretest - postest control group design.  Sampel penelitian terdiri atas 40 orang mahasiswa yang mengikuti kuliah zoologi vertebrata sebagai kelas eksperimen  dan 45 orang mahasiswa sebagai kelas kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes penguasaan konsep. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis statistik menggunakan SPSS 16 meliputi analisis uji beda rerata (uji t), effect size, dan uji korelasi Pearson two tail. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan penguasaan konsep mahasiswa pada kelas ekpserimen lebih baik dibandingkan kelas kontrol. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari uji beda rerata (uji t) N-gain (<g>) yang menunjukkan beda signifikan (α=5%), dan nilai efect size (d) sebesar 0.68 (kategori tinggi). Hasil uji korelasi menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan berpikir kritis memiliki hubungan positif dengan penguasaan konsep mahasiswa dengan nilai koofesien determinasi sebesar 0.4058 yang berarti bahwa keterampilan berpikir kritis memberikan kontribusi sebesar 40.58% terhadap penguasaan konsep mahasiswa. Abstract

PENGUKURAN BEBAN KOGNITIF MAHASISWA DALAM PERKULIAHAN BIOLOGI SEL  AbstractThis research is a descriptive study that aims to obtain a picture of the cognitive load of biology students on cell biology lecture. The study was conducted at the Biology Education Study Program in one of the Universities in Jakarta. Data collection was carried out in the even semester of the 2015/2016 academic year, in October 2015. The subject was 55 students who enrolled in cell biology courses was 55 students. Intrinsic cognitive load (ICL) is described in reverse through the ability to process information that is measured by using instrument that contain questions related to information received in the lecture in the form of student worksheets. Extraneous cognitive load (ECL) is described and measured by using a subjective rating scale questionnaire based on a Likert scale, contain statements about students' efforts in understanding the information received in the lecture. Germane cognitive load (GCL) is described and measured through unit tests conducted at the end of the lecture in the form of essay tests. The relationship between the three components of cognitive load was analyzed through correlation tests. The results showed the average student information processing ability was 91.12 (low ICL) with a mean mental effort of 61.31 (high ECL). For average learning outcomes 37.39 (low GCL). The results of statistical tests, it is known that the correlation of the information processing ability with mental effort inversely proportional (negative correlation) which shows students' information processing ability can help reduce mental effort in cell biology lectures. The high ECL and low GCL have implications for the need to improve cell biology learning strategies to reduce the students’s cognitive load.AbstrakPenelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran beban kognitif mahasiswa biologi pada perkuliahan biologi sel.  Penelitian  dilaksanakan  di  Prodi  Pendidikan  Biologi  di salah satu Perguruan Tinggi di Jakarta. Pengambilan data dilaksanakan  pada  semester  genap  tahun  akademik  2015/2016,  bulan  Oktober  2015. Subjek penelitian sebanyak 55 orang mahasiswa yang mengontrak mata kuliah biologi sel. Intrinsic cognitive load (ICL) digambarkan secara terbalik melalui kemampuan memproses informasi yang diukur dengan menggunakan instrumen yang yang berisi pertanyaan-pertanyaan terkait informasi yang diterima dalam perkuliahan yaitu berupa lembar kerja mahasiswa (LKM). Extraneous cognitive load (ECL) digambarkan dan diukur dengan menggunakan angket subjective rating scale berbasis skala Likert. Germane cognitive load (GCL) digambarkan dan diukur melalui tes unit yang dilakukan pada akhir perkuliahan berupa soal uraian. Hubungan antara ketiga komponen beban kognitif dianalisis melalui uji korelasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rerata kemampuan memproses informasi mahasiswa sebesar 91,12 (ICL rendah) dengan nilai rerata usaha mentalnya sebesar 61,31 (ECL tinggi). Untuk rerata hasil belajar 37,39 (GCL rendah). Dari hasil uji statistik diketahui korelasi kemampuan memproses informasi dengan usaha mental berbanding terbalik (korelasi negatif) yang menunjukkan kemampuan memproses informasi mahasiswa dapat membantu mengurangi usaha mental dalam perkuliahan biologi sel. Tingginya ECL dan rendahnya GCL memberikan implikasi terhadap perlunya perbaikan strategi pembelajaran biologi sel untuk menurunkan beban kognitif mahasiswa.

Abstract

The research on the contributions of Citizen Science (CS) at the school and university levels has primarily focused on the technical execution of projects undertaken by participants. Rarely has it measured the types of contributions these projects have on the science learning outcomes of the participants. This study aims to understand various types of Citizen Science Projects and their contributions to science learning achievements at the school and university levels. The study employs the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method, consisting of five stages: identification, scanning, eligibility, dan inclusion. The research findings identify 19 types of CSPs that contribute to science learning achievements at the school and university levels. Six indicators of science learning outcomes are measured through the implementation of CSPs in science education, both in schools and universities. These indicators include interest in science and the environment, motivation for learning science, self-efficacy, knowledge of content and scientific processes, science inquiry skills, and environmental awareness. The contributions of CSPs to these measured indicators of science learning outcomes show positive and significant results. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that CSPs contribute to science learning outcomes through input, output, and nurturant effects resulting from the implementation of CSPs. Educators can incorporate CSPs into science education to facilitate more optimal science learning.

Abstract

Citizen science (CS) has become a popular research in world education. However, it is still very little implemented in Indonesia. Besides that, the presence of the 21st century requires students to have 4C skills. CS integration in learning has the potential to train these skills. So, it is necessary to conduct research on CS-based biology learning to train 21st century skills. The results can become a reference source and guide for relevant research. This research was conducted by collecting articles related to citizen science and 21st century skills. There were 16 articles used with Scopus accreditation from various countries in the world. The method used is systematic literature review with PRISMA analysis. The results of this research include biological concepts related to CS to train 21 skills, CS innovations in learning, sources and models used in CS involvement, 21st century skills that can be trained, and CS-based biology learning. The material that is mostly used is biodiversity. Meanwhile, learning resources with CS integration include online (applications and website) and offline. The model used consists of project-based learning and inquiry. Learning innovation with CS involvement in the form of a framework which can be used as an evaluation tool. The 21st century skills with which CS is most frequently reported are collaboration and communication. CS is becoming a promising option for education with collaboration between scientists, students, and society. This is an opportunity to practice 21st century skills in learning.AbstrakCitizen science (CS) telah menjadi penelitian populer di pendidikan dunia. Namun, masih sangat sedikit dilaksanakan di Indonesia. Disamping itu, hadirnya abad 21 menuntut siswa untuk memilki keterampilan 4C. Integrasi CS dalam pembelajaran berpotensi melatihkan keterampilan tersebut. Sehingga, perlu dilakukan penelitian mengenai pembelajaran biologi berbasis CS untuk melatihkan keterampilan abad 21. Hasilnya, dapat menjadi sumber referensi dan panduan untuk penelitian relevan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan artikel yang berkaitan dengan citizen science dan keterampilan abad 21. Artikel yang digunakan sebanyak 16 dengan terakreditasi scopus dari berbagai negara dunia. Metode yang digunakan yaitu systematic literature review dengan analisis PRISMA. Hasil dari penelitian ini mencangkup konsep biologi yang berhubungan melalui CS untuk melatihkan keterampilan 21, inovasi CS dalam pembelajaran, sumber dan model yang digunakan dalam pelibatan CS, Keterampilan abad 21 yang dapat dilatihkan, dan pembelajaran biologi berbasis CS. Materi yang mayoritas digunakan yaitu keanekaragaman hayati. Sedangkan untuk sumber belajar dengan integrasi CS mencangkup online (aplikasi dan website) dan offline. Model yang digunakan terdiri dari project-based learning dan inkuiri. Inovasi pembelajaran dengan pelibatan CS berupa framework yang dapat digunakan sebagai alat evaluasi. Keterampilan abad 21 dengan pelibatan CS yang paling sering dilaporkan adalah kolaborasi dan komunikasi. CS menjadi pilihan yang menjanjikan untuk pendidikan dengan kolaborasi antara ilmuwan, siswa, dan masyarakat. Hal tersebut menjadi peluang untuk melatihkan keterampilan abad 21 dalam pembelajaran.
