Abstract

This study aims to investigate how set model can help students' understanding of addition of integers in fourth grade. The study has been carried out to 23 students and a teacher of IVC SD Iba Palembang in January 2015. This study is a design research that also promotes PMRI as the underlying design context and activity. Results showed that the use of set models that is packaged in activity of recording of financial transactions in two color chips and card game can help students to understand the concept of zero pair, addition with the same colored chips, and cancellation strategy.

Abstract

The aim of this research is produce a set of PISA-like mathematics task with Indonesia natural and cultural heritage as context which are valid, practical, to assess students’ mathematics literacy. This is design research using type of development research with formative evaluation. A total of 20 students of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. Beside, 10 experts were involved in this research to assess the feasibility of prototyping in terms of content, context and language. Walk through, documentation, questionnaire, test result, and interviews are way to collect the data. This research produced a PISA-like math task is as many 12 category of content, context, and process valid, practical and has potential effect. The validity came empirical evaluation of validation and reliability testing during small group. From the field test, we conclude that the tasks also potentially effect to the students’ mathematical literacy in activating the indicators of each Fundamental Mathematical Capabilities. Keywords: development research, PISA task, mathematics literacy, fundamental mathematical capabilities DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.1.2812.1-8

Abstract

Mixed numbers andfraction in general have been a problem for students not only in understanding the concept of itself, but also in understanding the operation of it, such as addition. Thus, supporting students in learning addition of mixed numbers is needed. the aim of this study is to develop a local instructional theory and materials related to supporting students  in learning addition mixed numbers. In order to develop the theory, this studyused design research method. The is collected by generatingthe video recording of the learning process, student’s written work, students’ result from pretest and posttest, the result of interview, and also the fields note from the observation. The participants of this study are fourth grade students in one of private elementary school in Palembang. From the study,it can be seen that students have built the reasoning in addition mixed numbers. Some of them are able to use the distribution principle and use equivalence fractions when they adding the mixed numbers, and some of them are directly used the algorithm of changing mixed number to improper fractions. However, it is insufficient to say that the fractions number line has a big role in the students’ finding.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and compare the students’ fluency, flexibility, and originality in solving non-routine problems in the Palembang context. They were depicted from the student’s fluency, flexibility, and originality of solving the horizontal and vertical mathematization forms. This qualitative study employed. The subjects of this study were 30 students of grade nine of junior high schools in Palembang. The instruments used were tests and interviews. The tests were employed to investigate the written horizontal and vertical mathematizations forms. Meanwhile, the interviews were to explore the students’ ideas with inadequately detailed answers. Then, the test and interview data were reduced and grouped based on the indicators of creativity. The reduced data were presented in a descriptive form for conclusions. The results of the data analysis showed that the high-ability students were the most fluent and flexible in solving the problems. Still, the provided solutions were less original and tended to use formal mathematics in the forms of formulas, symbols, and operations. Meanwhile, the moderate-ability students tended to start to solve problems by simplifying them, then presenting them in visual images. The answer sheets of the moderate-ability students revealed their fluency in understanding the problems and solutions, flexibility, and originality of thinking. This study obtained different results from the low-ability students who tended to have difficulties understanding the problems and made many errors in solving them.  Such a condition showed their inability to write the known data and relate the data to other facts they had already learned. As a result, their answers did not represent fluency, flexibility, and originality.

Abstract

In this paper, the Robust Counterpart Open Capacitation Vehicle Rounting Problem (RC-OCVRP) Model has been established to optimize waste transport in districts Sako and districts Sukarami, Palembang City. This model is completed with the aid of LINGO 13.0 by using Branch and Bound solver to get the optimum route. For Sako districs, the routes are as follows: working area 1 is TPS 1-TPS 2-TPS 3-TPA with distance 53.39 km, working area 2 is TPS 1-TPS 2-TPS 3-TPA with distance 48.14 km, working area 3 is TPS 1-TPA with a distance of 22.98 km, and working area 4 is TPS 1-TPS 2-TPS 3-TPS 4-TPA with 45.45 km distance, and obtained the optimum route in Sukarami districts is as follows: working area 1 is TPS 1-TPS 2-TPA 44.39 km, working area 2 is TPS 1-TPS 2-TPS 3-TPA with distance 49.32 km, working area 3 is TPS 1-TPS 3-TPA-TPS 2-TPA with distance 58.57 km, and working area 4 is TPS 1-TPA with a distance of 24.07 km, working area 5 is TPS 1-TPS 3-TPA-TPS 2-TPS 4-TPA with a distance of 77.66 km, and working area 6 is a TPS 1-TPS 2-TPS 3-TPA with a distante 44.94 km.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to produce a learning trajectory using the mathematical modeling in helping students to understand the concept of algebraic operations. Therefore, the design research was chosen to meet the research aims and to give in formulating and developing local instructional theory in learning algebraic operations.Learning trajectory designed in the early phases and tested on 34 seven-grade students in SMP N 10 Palembang. Data collection was conducted through observation by recording the learning process that occured in the classroom and students’ group work was evidenced by video and photos. Data was analyzed qualitatively by describing actual learning which happened in pilot experiment and teaching experiment. There are 3 learning activities in the design of this study. These 3 activities are designed based on the steps of the Mathematical Modeling, activity 1 meaning of algebraic expressions, activity 2 addition of algebraic and activity 3 subtraction of algebraic. Based on the result, it can be concluded that activity which has been designed can help the students in learning algebraic operations using mathematical modeling. Used mathematical modeling can help student solve the problems and understand concept are structured using the assumptions and model start they design so gradually developed into formal mathematics.
