Abstract

Lesson plans is the most important component in preparing a quality learning. Teachers’ low understanding on pedagogical content knowledge affects their skills in designing learning. It needs serious effort to equip future teachers with pedagogical content knowledge to produce professional teachers. The aim of this study is to increase the engagement and skills of future teachers in designing lesson plans using module based on pedagogical content knowledge. College-students engagement indicators are adopted from Students Engagement Instrument (SEI)-Appleton, Christenson, Kim, and Reschly, consisting of affective and cognitive engagement. The skill in question are the ability to writing the subject’s identity, writing competencies, formulating indicators, compiling teaching materials, designing media, choosing learning method, compiling learning scenarios, as well as designing assessment. This research is a classroom action research that is designed in two cycles of learning with the number of respondents is 73 college-students. Each learning cycle is consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The data collection techniques was self-report, observation, portfolios, interviews, field notes, and study documentation. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data, whereas qualitative data were analysed by qualitative analysis of Miles and Hubberman model. The results showed that the PCK-based module is able to increase college-students engagement and ability in designing a lesson plan.

Abstract

One indicator of 21st century skills is collaboration; essential skill students must acquire in century learning. This study aimed to reveal research trends over the last three years based on the start of COVID-19 by using content analysis and reviewing bibliometric results related to articles with collaboration keywords. For bibliometric mapping analysis, a total of 500 articles were accessed, and for content analysis, 31 articles were selected between 2019-2021 based on Google Scholar's database corresponding to the education field study of the research. The results showed that digital "health education collaboration" was the most searched keyword, while researchers focused on collaboration in education between 2019-2021. The most commonly used words in abstracts are teaching, creativity, ability, and community. It was evident that the latest articles primarily focused on skills. Bhone Myint Kyaw; AE Kinio is the most cited author in this field. The most cited journals are the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of Surgical Education, The Journal of Technology Transfer, the most prominent journal. The content analysis results showed that "21st-century skill, problem, and implementation" has become the most studied variable in the article.

Abstract

This study aims to identify publication trends and recommendations for problem-based science learning research in elementary schools. We used a mixed-methods research design in which descriptive, qualitative, and bibliometric analyses were used to look at the data. We selected the sample by using the purposive sampling technique. Secondary data contains Sinta-indexed research articles published in the Google Scholar database. Data were analyzed using content analysis and the VOS-Viewer. The results of the analysis show that between 2017 and 2021, 98 articles have been published with the keywords [problem-based learning] and [IPA or science learning] in national and international journals with research settings in Indonesia. Most publications occurred in 2020. The keywords that appear the most in the published articles obtained are [problem-based learning], [learning outcomes], [critical thinking skills], and [science learning]. The keyword [Tri Hita Karana], or three causes of well-being, appears, but with weak nodes. These keywords appear in many publications whose research settings are in Bali because they are ethnoscientific findings from that area. Weak nodes have several conjectures, namely that this theme has been researched to saturate or that research on this theme is still rarely carried out. This research contributes ideas for future research involving the theme of problem-based learning in science.

Abstract

Due to low levels of student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, elementary school students suffered significant learning losses, which served as the driving force behind this research. Teachers should be the key to solving problems. This research aims to measure how much influence the competence of professional elementary school teachers has on student engagement in Indonesia. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and survey method. Data collection was carried out through teacher professional competency and student involvement questionnaires, with data sources coming from elementary school teachers and students in the western, eastern, and central regions of Indonesia. Samples were taken using the cluster random sampling technique. Quantitative data analysis was used with descriptive statistical stages, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis. The results of the hypothesis test also show that professional competence in the aspect of understanding content and understanding the curriculum has a significant influence on student engagement, while in the aspect of understanding student character, it does not have a significant influence. These results make an important contribution to teachers' ongoing professional development. Aspects of content development and curriculum development are recommended as priorities for self-development.

Abstract

The decision to become teacher is greatly influenced by certain motivations such as altruistic, intrinsic, and extrinsic. Examining these motivations influencing individuals’ decisions to become teachers is essential for sustainable professional development. This is because no previous publication has focused on Generation Z’s (Gen Z) extrinsic motivations to pursue teaching profession. Therefore, this study aimed to explore motivations of Gen Z to become teachers in elementary schools. A qualitative analysis was adopted with a focus group discussion method including 58 pre-service teachers learning at the primary school teacher education program. Furthermore, the participants in the analysis were aged 18-22 years and also fell into the Gen Z category. Data obtained from the participants was further analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that extrinsic motivations underlying the desire of Gen Z to become teachers originated from the high social respect teaching receives from society, the promise of prosperity, and adequate employment opportunities. Extrinsic motivations also originated from childhood experiences inspired by religious teachings and the parents. The study further emphasized the importance of understanding the participants’ motivations for entering teaching profession to improve recruitment systems, providing motivation, set hours and workloads, as well as welfare systems for Gen Z teachers.
